I know this isn't the right place but l didn't get any answers within streamed TV, so apologies.

Currently in process of cancelling Sky in the hope they will reduce the subscription.

However DS1 and 2 have said they want Netflix. They have it at their Dad's already. DS2 has it on his phone via their membership.

I'm trying to figure out how it will all "work" and l need help preferably with pictures as I'm not technically minded.

If l get rid of sky... how will l watch TV? Will l need to get a freeview box (is that the correct terminology??).

My TV downstairs is a Smart TV so l know l can get Netflix on that but the one in my bedroom isn't. So does that mean l won't be able to watch Netflix upstairs?

I have also heard of Now TV and I'm wondering if that is better than Netflix?

It will be a ladder and splitter job. Then they use a massive drill from outside and create you a new aerial point in your room.

FlyingMonkeys · 02/05/2019 21:05

We were quoted an extra £30 for a splitter per room when I had a new arial fitted. I would have paid but the now tv box meant it wasn't needed... I'll stfu about now tv now as I sound like I fricking sell it 😂 - interested if anyone switched from it to Netflix though? As I've been considering as it's a lot cheaper.

Heulog · 02/05/2019 21:10

We don't have very modern TVs, got rid of sky and use the Now TV smart sticks. You need to have a USB slot and a HDMI slot then it connects to your home WiFi. It's saving us so much money and we don't feel that we miss out on any of the sky stuff because its all on the now stick anyway.

SnapesGreasyHair · 02/05/2019 21:57

So grateful to everyone who has contributed

I think now tv will be what l will consider as l like Sky Atlantic....

I'm still holding out on sky phoning tomorrow and offering me a stonking deal

OP posts:
SnapesGreasyHair · 02/05/2019 21:59

Am l correct in that as l don't an aerial upstairs, that even if l get Now TV l won't get BBC 1,2 ITV or Ch4?

OP posts:
Scotinwestyorkshire · 02/05/2019 22:06

Have a look at Roku plug in boxes, they are what the now TV boxes are based on. You get Netflix, amazon, I player etc plus now TV

SnapesGreasyHair · 03/05/2019 06:20

@Scotinwestyorkshire - so that would be on my upstairs TV, which would enable me to watch TV up there?

This is my upstairs TV

We got rid of Sky about a year ago and got Now TV. We much prefer it, and get more we use (we didn't get films through Sky). Netflix can be accessed through Now TV, along with all the iPlayer-type apps. We've found paying for both Now TV and Netflix subscriptions is still cheaper than Sky.

SnapesGreasyHair · 03/05/2019 07:20

@skankingpiglet - sky offered me subscription of £30/mth for their entertainment package and multiroom. I still felt this was too much ..... but as you can see from this thread I'm not the most technologically gifted, so maybe l should have just stayed with Sky for ease

SnapesGreasyHair · 03/05/2019 07:24

Downstairs TV is now sorted though. It is a smart TV so l can watch terrestrial and get Netflix if l so wish.

It's upstairs that I'm struggling to sort.

I don't have an aerial, although l do have a sky cable.

I really want terrestrial upstairs - i.e BBC, ITV and C4. But l can't see a way of getting that without an aerial.

Unless anyone knows a way?

Get a roku stick, you can use that for all the free channels like bbc ilayer 4od etc you can also get netflix, amazon prime and now tv on it as free apps then you sign in using your existing netflix etc account details.

PearlHeart3 · 03/05/2019 07:32

@SnapesGreasyHair

If you're adamant you want terrestrial channels through your upstairs television, is recommend buying a cheapish Freesat box, as you already have the sky/satellite cables installed, correct? It's them just a question of plugging the sky cable into the back of the Freesat box and then plugging the Freesat box into your television's hdmi port. You will then get access to all the terrestrial channels, including some Freesat channels (Google what these are) without the need to access third party apps like BBC iPlayer. If you buy a Freesat box with the capability to record programmes, you can then store programmes like you used to be able to on your old sky box.

madamy · 03/05/2019 07:35

Looks like your upstairs TV will receive big standard freeview. If you're lucky and in an area with good reception, you could try an indoor aerial that just plugs into the back of the TV. It's what we use but we're on top of a hill in a loft conversion so the signal is strong!

madamy · 03/05/2019 07:36

bog standard...

PearlHeart3 · 03/05/2019 07:38

From the sounds of it @SnapesGreasyHair doesn't have an aerial cable/point upstairs so I wouldn't advise buying a Freeview box as she wouldn't be able to plug a cable into it. That's why I recommended Freesat as she has existing satellite/Sky cables from before.

SaskiaRembrandt · 03/05/2019 07:56

Another vote for getting a Roku for your upstairs television. You won't need an ariel, you just plug it in and connect to your broadband.

SaskiaRembrandt · 03/05/2019 07:57

When I say plug it in - I mean connect it to the television, not just the electric socket. They're really simple to set up and use though.

SnapesGreasyHair · 03/05/2019 08:07

@PearlHeart3 is correct. I don't have an aerial point/cable upstairs but l do have the sky cable.

These one's...

OP posts:
PearlHeart3 · 03/05/2019 08:12

Yes, you can plug those cables into a Freesat box @SnapesGreasyHair

Of course you can use things such as Roku, Firestick etc, but you won't get terrestrial television through them. You can access some apps like BBC iPlayer which gives you live streaming, but you won't get live streaming on the All 4 app as you can only watch their catalog of available programmes. If you want to just turn on the TV and watch live television like you would using a sky box, then Freesat is your best bet.

SnapesGreasyHair · 03/05/2019 08:45

Thankyou so much. I really appreciate your help.

I have just spent the last half an hour pulling all the furniture out and being disgusted at my lack of housework and l have two sky cables and l think an aerial point!!!! I'm going to see if it works before l get too excited!

OP posts:
SnapesGreasyHair · 03/05/2019 09:09

Omg...my trauma is going on and on....

The aerial cable l have doesn't fit in the TV. From what l can google see, l have a male/female cable which is fine for downstairs TV.

Upstairs TV needs a male connection on each end.

I just assumed as I'm thick that all TV aerial inputs would be the same

OP posts:
PearlHeart3 · 03/05/2019 09:31

Can you take a photo of your upstairs aerial point and share @SnapesGreasyHair ?

SnapesGreasyHair · 03/05/2019 10:51

OMG... l found a male to male cable in my cupboard.

And the TV works!!!

I really can't thank you all enough.

I really do feel quite proud of myself and feel (with all your help) l have really accomplished something!

I know that's a bit silly, but when you've been told for years how useless you are when it comes to technology, l really feel a confidence boost!!

Just need to decide now what route to take for streaming. I think it will be Now TV as that has the Sky channel's that l want to watch. This TV has a USB solt. Although having a box will give me the option of Netflix too wouldn't it?
