To not understand this nursery trend?

Since being pregnant and constantly looking at baby stuff on Instagram my entire discover is full of baby related content. All I see is floor to ceiling white/grey nursery's, with all white furniture, big fluffy white rugs.. kids bedrooms all in muted colours, mainly white and grey, very gorgeous to look at.. but AIBU to think surely these aren't what kids want? And surely it's a recipe for disaster having SO much white? I feel like if the little ones had the choice it would be a lot more colourful and a bit more fun. Some examples attached!

I personally like it as looks fresh and clean . Can always be painted once the child expresses a particular interest xx

wheretheydwell · 23/03/2019 20:02

I actually don't agree that kids prefer lots of bright colours. The best quality nurseries I have been too were more natural in design (talking about nurseries you send kids to when you go to work). I find all those bloody primary colours headache inducing, and presumably some kids feel the same.

countrygirl99 · 23/03/2019 20:08

I wouldn't like to see the effects of a poonami on all that white!

ShabbyAbby · 23/03/2019 20:13

I don't find the gender out and therefore stick to "gender neutral" colours. Also, it means my DCs can share a room if needs be, or hand things down to each other. I prefer white and grey for little babies, with primary colours becoming progressively more dominant towards pre school age.

I am not a big fan of themed bedrooms, or overly decorated, gendered or character orientated spaces. I like a combination of wood, neutral colours, white, grey and small splashes of colour throughout my home, really. With lots of plants, books, toys and instruments. Montessori inspired but not rigid. I buy plastic toys too, and have given in to the TV being the living rooms centre piece. But I think there is something grounding where the colour in a room comes from the things in it, not the fussy wall paper.

Mamabeartofive · 23/03/2019 20:16

I have 5 children, age range 16-3yo I have always had white walls, white bedding and very light grey carpets, its more practical than you think... white paint is really cheap and nowadays is fully scrubbable plus white sheets take a good old bleaching lol! I’ve always been (oh so) slightly obsessed with my house being clean fresh and simple, the garden is the children’s domain with bright plastic crappy toys Grin

Pinkbells · 23/03/2019 20:31

I LOVE the mostly white with touches of grey. I wanted to do our nursery like that but my husband wanted it white with lots of pops of primary colours about - which we did, but I still love the picture above. I like white because if something is dirty then you can SEE it and clean it.

bebeboeuf · 23/03/2019 20:32

I paired DS room all in grey before he came as we didn’t know what he would be or what he would like at that point and I was painting the rest of the house the same colour.

Now he’s toddler he has fun rug, duvet and curtains and lots of colourful prints on the walls too.

Glad I went grey

Pinkbells · 23/03/2019 20:33

That third picture with the giraffe is gorgeous

Bibijayne · 23/03/2019 20:33

I'm with you. I'm all about the colours and garish stuff that our DS loves.

Lou12124 · 23/03/2019 20:33

I have done my twins nursery all white and added wall stickers in butterfly and woodland creature themes. I feel it's better white as you can accessorise it. But its completely down to the parents preference. Babys dont spend that much time in their room other than night time when they can't see the colours!

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 23/03/2019 20:36

I had all white bedrooms for my babies, and it was never a problem
I hate all that kitsch kiddie decor, gaudy colours and farm animals, bunnies

small2018 · 23/03/2019 20:37

I agree OP, I like bright and fun colours. And I'm sooooo bored of seeing grey everywhere!!

Sara107 · 23/03/2019 20:38

Everything seems to be muted whites and greys now. I ordered a blind in John Lewis recently and chose a fairly ordinary blue. The shop assistant was very excited ‘oh! You’ve chosen a colour! How unusual, everyone buys neutrals now’.

SchnitzelVonCrum · 23/03/2019 20:40

Just do what you fancy, we have a white washed style herringbone wood floor though, and it’s been a godsend, can't think what state the carpet would be in by now - DD is a sticky baby. So if you choose one thing from Instagram I would recommend this! So hygienic as well as can steam mop it 👍👍

SadOtter · 23/03/2019 21:00

I think it's really boring, I had great fun decorating my DC's bedrooms.

DD and DS both had very light blue rooms, DS's had plane mobiles and a fantastic hot air baloon shape lampshade and bi-plane shelves. DD's was sea themed, with sand colour carpet, fish mobile, jellyfish lampshade and boat shelves. Both had projectors on the ceilings, DS' was stars (it was a really cool one that showed real constellations) and DD's made wave effects. Both rooms grew with them by changing accessories as they grew, DS added lots of dragons, DD added lots of mermaids.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 23/03/2019 21:04

Otter,I think that is boring and lacks imagination.a tick box of nursery cliches
But hey we all have different aesthetics

thedisorganisedmum · 23/03/2019 21:18

LipstickHandbagCoffee

why do you need to be so mean and unpleasant?

The only place in the world where people can feel comfortable is their home, decorated in their own taste. As long as it's not outrageous, (like painting a nursery black ceiling included), who cares what people chose?

small2018 · 23/03/2019 21:19

@SadOtter those rooms sound awesome!

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 23/03/2019 21:34

It’s not mean to acknowledge different aesthetic tastes.i think otter will be ok
I’m comfortable with my preferences and of course others are free to comment

StarlingsEverywhere · 23/03/2019 22:04

@SadOtter, I think they sound amazing too - full of imagination and fun. DS has a hot air balloon mobile and he loves to fall asleep in summer staring at it moving in the breeze from the open window. And sand coloured carpet is a stroke of genius! When I was growing up, I had an old green carpet in my bedroom, an offcut or something, and it was perfect for being “grass” for all my toy farm and zoo animals.

PolarBearkshire · 23/03/2019 22:08

To be honest i dont see that disturbing. More disturbing that everyone is showing off and buys nurseries for credit- literally cant afford but I “must “ buy like my friends neighbours etc... in truth baby just need a mum and safe clean environment. At that age they dont care 100%. I have seen babies in loving clay caves and they looked as happy as the ones that lived in a mansion with designer furniture. Every working class nowadays tries to copy aristocratic or new rich showing off... how sad. Just love your baby and dont worry about colours designs etc. Unless ot soothes your psyche or you can afford all the unnecessary fuss. So much thrown out furniture, so much wAste, so much plasticky gimmicky rubbish around babies ... why ? Just why?

MissMoan · 23/03/2019 22:08

Ha that would not stay white for long!

Jessie94 · 23/03/2019 22:22

My sons is similar to this. It's because we're very naturally minded so most of his toys are wooden/wood coloured. And all white furniture to keep the room light and airy. He's nearly 3 and I've never had issues keeping it clean. A lot of colour can be really over stimulating so we just do touches here and there :). It's a nice calm space for feeding and sleeping. All his toys are downstairs so it's not like he plays up there much. He has lots of books which add colour and excitement and colours on his bedding

AnnaNutherThing · 23/03/2019 22:28

These types of shots are like the clinical kitchen look: noone i know lives like that OR ASPIRES to!

Imo Its a minority thing given oxygen by the internet. Previously it would have been a few people who worked in glossy mags.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 23/03/2019 22:34

Maybe no one you know,I know plenty of people with that aesthetic
Conversely I don’t know anyone with twee lil animals, astronaut, shapes aesthetic
However, because one wouldn’t select it for themselve, doesn’t mean it’s not a thing
There’s a huge gamut of tastes and budget out there
White is the easiest to achieve and most cost effective
