To be surprised at people who say they get drunk on 1 small glass of wine?

Just that really. Even when I was a teenager and had a drink about once a year, 1 small glass of wine had no effect on me.

I once knew a Japanese girl who got totally shitfaced on half a glass of wine.

Tolerance levels vary wildly. Mind you I can drink far, far more vodka than wine and not feel drunk. However my tolerance for beer is even lower than wine. I’d be properly drunk on a pint.

I'm virtually tea total now. I drink about twice a year, being Christmas and New Year. Then, it's literally one glass of something - normally shandy, mulled wine or a certain brand of Prosecco.

I cannot drink normal wine or spirits.

Yes, I literally get ill on one glass of something. Once I collapsed in my friends hallway after I'd had half a glass of champagne. I had a migraine for days after one glass of red wine.

I don't know if I have a weird allergy to alcohol or have a very low tolerance. Over the years it has really bothered other people. Now I'm nearly 50 and I give no shits. I'll happily party like the rest of them, just with a nice soft drink in my wine glass. Sometimes I tell people I'm a recovering alcoholic to get them to back off.

It never ceases to amaze me why some people are very bothered about what alcohol (or not) you are drinking.

claireblueskies · 19/03/2019 08:19

I can't drink a whole small glass of wine - I'll be on the floor.

I drink a lot of spirits, but wine affects me very differently. Everyone in my family is the same - we have no wine tolerance. It's genetics.

There’s someone on another thread claiming to have got drunk on a mince pie........

Alwayscheerful · 19/03/2019 08:24

I fear I am alcohol intolerant.

I agree Millicent.Would someone if you were out for a meal who had a bigger appetite criticise you and insist you shovel more food in ?And yet loads of times in the past I've been asked why I don't want another drink. Fortunately our best friend who can drink cocktaiks, then wine and sometimes a whisky after a meal out never make me feel I'm not good company. And why should anyone ?

Halloumimuffin · 19/03/2019 08:29

I also find it interesting how people can have SUCH a range of tolerance, obviously excluding those where it is genetic. I'm less than 8 stone (very short) and it takes a bottle of wine before I'm properly tipsy, can definitely drink two in a night although I would never. I'd much rather be drunk off a glass.

StealthPolarBear · 19/03/2019 08:31

Lol Bertrand.
I always wonder why those people who drink half a glass of wine at Christmas even bother. If you only fancy something once a year I don't see the appeal.

hippopootamus · 19/03/2019 08:33

I have half a shandy every third full moon. Any more than that implies you have a problem GrinGrinGrin.

lololove · 19/03/2019 08:33

I drink very rarely (unless it's Christmas when I do have a few more) so I have been known to have a glass of wine, a pint or something that doesn't get me drunk but does losen the tongue a bit so I'm more chatty.

TeenTimesTwo · 19/03/2019 08:38

I start feeling lightheaded after a half glass of wine with a meal. I definitely wouldn't feel safe to drive. I don't drink much and have never developed any tolerance.

Adversecamber22 · 19/03/2019 08:38

atbobbyshouse same here as mixed race though I don’t get Asian blush as in the extreme redness though I had a friend who did.

A glass of wine definitely gets me tipsy and hungover the next morning 🙈 thankfully only lasts a few hours. I rarely drink now though

maddening · 19/03/2019 08:53

I am 41 and don't drink regularly, perhaps once a month but not every month. I can pack it away incredibly and don't get much of a hangover - lucky 🤩🤩🤩

You see, I know it's lighthearted (and not precisely the topic of the thread) but statements such as this all the add to the underlying pressure if you're a person who doesn't really drink. The idea that you're somehow a bit pathetic for even bothering. I've often been told that I should "just let my fucking hair down".

I like a glass of mulled wine (probably because most of the alcohol is burnt off!) so why not at Christmas? Likewise a glass of Prosecco at New Year.
For what's its worth, I wish I could drink a bit more. It's nice if you find something that sits with you ok. I used to be able to and not suffer at all.

It's just now drinking more regularly, or more quantities just isn't worth a week long flu-like state of illness.

Milicentbystander72 · 19/03/2019 09:05

In fact, the range of non alcoholic beers and wine have improved a lot recently. I've been drinking lots of them. People might say why bother? Honestly? Because if people think you're drinking alcohol they don't mention it and it's an easy life for me.

Lovestonap · 19/03/2019 09:21

Re the 'why do they bother at xmas' opinion, you don't eat mince pies or stollen all year round do you? Some experiences, flavours have a festive association.

Tinty · 19/03/2019 09:44

'why do they bother at xmas'

I think this is aimed at me. Grin

I never grew up drinking alcohol, my parents barely drink. At Christmas we go to the in laws who also drink little, but get in some 'festive' drinks. So I may have a glass of Baileys on Christmas day and New Years Eve. I don't like the taste of alcohol very much, but a small baileys in coffee is quite pleasant.

Mostly I drive everywhere, never at home much in the evening to drink and my job relies on me driving everyday, not to mention I live in a rural area and there is no local bus service so I have to drive to even get to work

StealthPolarBear · 19/03/2019 16:21

Thank you tinty!
I don't eat mince pies etc all year round because I'm not that keen on them. Eat them to be polite. The Christmas food I do like, salted peanuts and chocolate, I eat as often as I can :)

Bertrand you haven't tried my MIL's mince pies Grin

MrsEricBana · 19/03/2019 21:16

Tolerances vary. Even the first sip makes me start to feel odd. I feel upset that both my mother and husband STILL try to encourage me to have a drink. Why would they? I can only assume it makes them feel better about having a drink themselves if I do.

Bluntness100 · 19/03/2019 21:23

I think the issue is what's the definition of drunk or tipsy.

Drunk to most people is staggering about, slurring your words, passing out, having a black out etc etc, and I doubt anyone would feel that after a small glass.

So I think when people say they are drunk after a small glass of wine, or tipsy what they mean is they can feel the effects of it.

And yes a lot will be in the persons head, they think they will be drunk or tipsy so believe they are.

daisypond · 19/03/2019 21:34

But those who think one glass has no effect on them may, and probably are, wrong. People who protest they’re not drunk are the worst. Over talkative, aggressive, maudlin, what have you. It’s just they think they’re fine.

katseyes7 · 19/03/2019 21:38

l don't drink these days (always have the car) but l could never drink wine. One glass had me squiffy. l could drink vodka all night, but wine just sent me daft.
