5 year presents

Money is tight as partner couldn't take a proper wage this month. 5 year old will have a bike ( refurbished looks like new) his first one. A personalised book and a party at a soft play. We are going out the day before not decided where with his grandparents ( they live abroad so only see us 2/3 times a year ) they'll have a ton of presents, each friend around 20 will bring a gift ( usually) as will god parents and other grandparents. Aibu? Feeling guilty

Seriously? What more do you think the child should get? If you are struggling financially I'd ditch the soft play centre and the day out (if day out is costing you anything), and just have cake at home with the grandparents. There is no need to have 2 parties for a 5 year old and a bike is quite a big gift.

If you're feeling guilty about spending that much money when things are financially tight, cancel one of the parties and/or drop the book and just do the bike.

That sounds absolutely fine and like the others said if money is tight cancel the day out and play games at home.

If you were wanting to get a few more gifts look out on Facebook free sites or freecycle. I've got things from these before to give as gifts to my children :) nothing wrong with second hand!

Bike is 2nd hand. I have zero issues with 2nd hand I don't live in UK anymore and 2nd shops and online just don't exist much here 1 in my town 2 in the city ish. The soft play is the main thing as he loves it so much and I've put money aside for it.

So what is the AIBU here? Is it about an excess of stuff – 20+ presents as well as a bike?

Ok I now feel a bit silly, I would have liked to give a couple more of actual presents but I think after reading some of these ( quite blunt but thanks ) replies he will get a lot more out of the party, bike and family than more stuff in my house.

If you think he should have more to open from you, you can always add a couple of chocolate something or haribos.

He'll enough presents from everybody else, and at that age, a soft play party is great, big deal made for his birthday and lots of fun.

what about blowing up a pack of balloons and having them in the room with the gifts? I did this when dd didn't get much more than a bike for her birthday.

He'll be super excited about his bike, he's getting a great party and will have a ridiculous mound of gifts after it. Getting more plastic won't improve his day at all. He'll love it.
