To think we've messed up with passport and should forget it?

Meant to be going away 2nd week of Easter.

Discovered today that just one of the DCs passport runs out in June, so not 6 months on it.

DH still reckons we can get it through on time...I'm thinking with the panic over Brexit, the wait for passports atm is going to be insane?

Do we frantically try or just accept that we've messed this one up and try to book something cheap and cheerful in the UK fast before those are all booked up too and we end up with nothing??? Nightmare.

Mine was completed in a week online over the Xmas period which included bank holidays. So I think online is a good service

LeatherFace · 20/03/2019 18:10

Went to passport office today, getting it back next week. Wasn't particularly busy.

Loubylou79 · 20/03/2019 18:13

A week to get ours back. All done online including taking photo with my phone. They will add the remaining months onto the passport if you do it before expiry

prettybird · 20/03/2019 18:18

Loubylou - they no longer add unexpired months on to new passports. That changed some time last year - without any publicity Angry

dementedpixie · 20/03/2019 18:26

They don't add months on and haven't since last September I think. My new one arrived today, 10 days after my online application was done. Still waiting on dh's and dd's to come through as they were also done at the same time. All 3 went to 3 different passport offices though

bliminy · 20/03/2019 18:53

Also don't get how people don't know. I know exactly when we renewed our passports (February 2013,) so know it's due for renewal February 2023. Why do people not know/retain such important information?

Between the 5 of us in our family we have 11 passports, all acquired on different dates, so with 11 different renewal dates.

SoupDragon · 20/03/2019 18:55

They will add the remaining months onto the passport if you do it before expiry

That also made it trickier to remember an expiry date. I know when I renewed mine and ds1's for example but both had very different expiry dates.

(But as others have said, they don't do that any more)

xyzandabc · 20/03/2019 18:57

DH renewed his last week. Was back in 7 days. Go for it.

Swatsup · 20/03/2019 18:59

I got new kids passports before halfterm term and one came back quick but one took took 3 weeks but I think we were unlucky as it got picked for a random check of the countersigniture. I would go for the appointment at the passport office if you can do this with kids. Was a worrying week as it arrived just in time for our holiday.

MrsPear · 20/03/2019 19:01

Last year it took us 12 weeks for a renewal .... Just saying you never know.

Land0r · 20/03/2019 19:22

I renewed DD2's online the week before last. She is 9 so I needed to get new photos and the form countersigned. Passport took exactly a week from the day they received the form, photos and her expiring passport. Not fast-track or anything.

CakeMakesMeHappy · 20/03/2019 19:29

We have an appointment for London on Friday for my DDs. Same problem.

The passport office assure me it will be back within a week.

CakeMakesMeHappy · 20/03/2019 19:29

Most expensive passport she’ll ever have mind.

Mistigri · 20/03/2019 20:25

If you're planning to drive to Europe for your holiday, then as well as the passport I would get your international driving permit sorted out immediately - just seen on twitter that stocks at post offices are running out with no date for new deliveries.

ChicCroissant · 20/03/2019 20:50

Slightly off-topic, but I also had a letter this week from my car insurer advising that if we have a no-deal Brexit I'd need a Green Card from them to drive abroad. Something else to keep an eye on!

museummumblog · 05/04/2019 12:05

Has anyone applied for a passport renewal in the last couple of weeks? Would love some more recent examples of passport renewal times. Applied 22 March after reading this thread about an 8 day turnaround but due to delays on digital check, sending docs etc it only went in the queue last Friday morning. Wondering if I need to panic or if it will come back next week (we fly a week tomorrow).

museummumblog · 05/04/2019 12:06

Also, thanks for tip on IDP. After 8 visits to post offices we managed to get a form and apply yesterday.

Bufferingkisses · 05/04/2019 12:07

My dds arrived yesterday. Renewed online, posted old one, approved day after old one received, arrived here 2 days Later. Honestly the fastest turn around I've ever had.

Its worth a go, I suspect they have drafted in help because of the expected rise in demand.

bigKiteFlying · 05/04/2019 12:49

DD is on a school trip to the EU at Easter and they have been told they need 6 months on their passports.

We've been told the same for a early June school trip.

We applied on line for first passport for one of ours - there was a sperate bit to print off for the counter signatory which got posted off - which was different to normal form apparently as HT hadn't seen it before but it was quicker turn around than one we did entirely off-line for another child.

museummumblog · 08/04/2019 12:56

Day 11 since they've received the old passport and no update. Mine went to Liverpool, not sure if this is slower than the other places, or if there is now longer processing times.

Tohaveandtohold · 08/04/2019 13:14

We renewed DD1’s passport and applied for a first passport for DD2 using the post office check and send 2 weeks ago. We got them 6 working days later. My supporting documents came later. Just do it
