To think we've messed up with passport and should forget it?

Meant to be going away 2nd week of Easter.

Discovered today that just one of the DCs passport runs out in June, so not 6 months on it.

DH still reckons we can get it through on time...I'm thinking with the panic over Brexit, the wait for passports atm is going to be insane?

Do we frantically try or just accept that we've messed this one up and try to book something cheap and cheerful in the UK fast before those are all booked up too and we end up with nothing??? Nightmare.

I applied last Sunday, took the photo at home using an iPhone and uploaded it. Sent old passport on Monday by special delivery and had a text this morning to say that application and photo approved and next text will let me know when it is dispatched.

dementedpixie · 17/03/2019 17:04

Start the application online right now and then either put the old passport in the post to be uplifted tomorrow morning or send it by special delivery so it gets there faster. The faster they get the old one back the faster the process will be. If your child is under 12 then they will need email details of a countersignstory but they don't sign a photo now

Mammyofonlyone · 17/03/2019 17:13

I haven't rtft but mine both came back in six days

irregularegular · 17/03/2019 17:21

Meh. We're in same position. We've got a flight to Greece 10 April. DS's passport won't have 6m on it and neither will mine (almost, but not quite). I think a no-deal Brexit before then is extremely unlikely now. And even if does happen, I'd be amazed if they decided to stop us travelling on those passports. 6m is very much a "belt and braces" approach. I am however slightly nervous about sending them off at this point. I'm wavering, but I probably won't bother now.

irregularegular · 17/03/2019 17:22

Though having read the thread and people's experience maybe I should just bite the bullet and get on with it. Either way though, I really wouldn't worry.

irregularegular · 17/03/2019 17:25

It's just the photo bit that is a faff. But I guess we'll have to do it before next year anyway...

ToffeePennie · 17/03/2019 17:26

I got my sons first ever passport in 2 weeks. Why not just send it off....

Dagnabit · 17/03/2019 17:29

I've just in the process of renewing my dds- it runs out in October and we go away in May so couldn't run the risk with all the Brexit uncertainty. I renewed online and took my own digital photo on Monday, my neighbour verified it via email on Tuesday, I posted it on Wednesday, was delivered by Thursday and they updated the passport tracker on Friday. It seems very slick so hopefully will be sorted this week so I think you'll have time to sort it. It's a good money spinner for them though, extra £50 for them and we lose 5 months!

ticolac · 17/03/2019 17:31

Just renewed DH and DS passports. One via post, one online through Post Office. Both took around 6 working days. Postal application for DS was sent via Post Office Check and Send on Weds 6th March. Delivered Thursday 14th. Much quicker than we had anticipated.

dementedpixie · 17/03/2019 17:33

It's much cheaper to renew online

prettybird · 17/03/2019 17:46

One thing for people to be aware of if they renewed "early" in the last 10 years (up until about October last year): the Passport Office used to add the unexpired months on to the period of validity of the passport (so you could, in theory have a passport that is valid for 10 years and just under 9 months).

But once we leave the EU, the passport is only valid for 10 years from the date of issue : so you need to be aware of that date + 10 years and make sure to renew 6 months before that. Not sure if that is just the case for the EU or worldwide.

Since some time last year, the Passport Office has just been renewing for a straight 10 years, and not adding on the unexpired months, so going forward, it's no longer an issue (although it makes renewing passports either/both more expensive and more nerve wracking as you lose any unexpired time when you renew, so there's an incentive to leave it to the last minute Hmm).

chuttypicks · 17/03/2019 18:05

I recently applied for my child's first passport and it was back in 2 weeks. I applied around 4 weeks ago.

TriciaH87 · 17/03/2019 18:12

Hold off until next week when we know whats happening with the extension. Can always fast track it or even take a trip to peterborough to get it same day.

RavenousBabyButterfly · 17/03/2019 18:17

I did our renewals very recently. I did it online then printed it off so I could post it in with photos but you can do digital photos online. I didn't fast track but they were still here within a week. It was really efficient. If I were you I'd just do it now I think there's time.

MullofKintire · 17/03/2019 18:18

even take a trip to peterborough to get it same day.

Do they do same day children’s passports? They did not used to do so.

Isohungy · 17/03/2019 18:19

Op I sent mine off 2 weeks ago and got it back Friday... it was so quick!

dementedpixie · 17/03/2019 18:34

No I don't think you get same day child passports. Fastest is 1 week. You make the appointment online for that

TheInventorofToasterStreudel · 17/03/2019 19:08

I sent off paperwork for my passport a week ago yesterday (Saturday). It came on Friday!

RavenousBabyButterfly · 17/03/2019 19:22

They did a same-day one for my DS 5 years ago. I'd look on the official website to see if that's changed.

RandomMess · 17/03/2019 19:44

Why did a child first passport when neither parents have a valid passport, it was back from passport office in less than 2 weeks less than a month ago. On line renewal will be through no problem!

sailorsdelight · 17/03/2019 19:47

You can get a passport in a day if you need to atvthenpassport iffice . Fast track takes a week. Most countries don’t require 6 months left justbfor the passport to be in date.

dementedpixie · 17/03/2019 20:03

www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently says 1 week fast track for child first passport or renewal, not same day

WordsAndWorlds · 17/03/2019 20:28

Thank you everybody you've been awesome. We've filled out all the stuff tonight- hadn't realised it wasn't as complicated for a renewal. Will submit tomorrow and cross our fingers!

I completed 3 online applications on Sunday 10th, posted the 3 old passports on Monday 11th (to 3 different passport offices) and have received the first new passport back today (mine!) So that was just 10 days from first applying.

DH's has been dispatched and is due in the next 2 days and Dd's new one has been approved today and is due to be printed and then sent out.
