Weekend Away Recommendations

Posting for traffic (sorry)

My friend and I had decided to take a weekend away to recharge our batteries, we are both early 40's. We have done Barcelona, Amsterdam & Paris (not together), but we are avoiding EU countries until Brexit is sorted. What we would like:

  • Not a long flight
  • Something historical as I love to explore
  • not too cold
  • Spa (or at least be able to get a massage)
  • My friend would like a show or something to do in the evening that isn't just drinking

That's it really. We don't want a spa or beach without much else to do. Something unusual or 'wacky' would be good.

Hit me with your ideas

Bath
Has a spa plus history

bridgetreilly · 14/03/2019 20:27

It's cold but I would definitely recommend Reykjavik.

Mena House in Cairo? It’s very secure and sits in the shadow of the Pyramids. It’s beautiful and historic. The food is great. There’s a gorgeous pool. The light and sound show at the Pyramids is great! Very James Bond.

Stratford upon Avon and see a play at the theatre. Lots of lovely restaurants and nice walks.

cuppycakey · 14/03/2019 20:39

Marrakech?

Yoyo10000 · 14/03/2019 20:47

Each to their own and all that but I thought Cairo was a shithole so I wouldn’t go there unless you plan to stay in your hotel. Ive stayed in that hotel and the pyramids are right on the edge of town and are really not worth the effort of a 5 hr flight for me. Beggars everywhere and security everywhere you go. I didn’t feel safe in that place.

If you can tolerate the flight then New York. Wonderful place.

If you can get past Brexit issues then Krakow, Prague, Lisbon

HotSauceCommittee · 14/03/2019 20:50

Budapest? Hot baths/Spas....

HeronLanyon · 14/03/2019 20:52

Pyramids not worth 5 hour flight ! Absolutely floored by that. Plus Cairo museum with all the unbelievable mummies and tomb artifacys etc. Can always nip down to Luxor actuallynwhy not a long weekend in Luxor ?? Blimey - literally wonders of the world !!each to their own I guess of course.

Purplejay · 14/03/2019 20:59

York, Stratford, Liverpool, Manchester London, Cardiff. All have stuff to do, nice restaurants and make a good weekend break.

If you want to go abroad but not EU what about Switzerland or Norway. Both lovely but can be expensive.

Purplejay · 14/03/2019 21:01

Of you decide to not worry about Brexit I would suggest Italy (Florence, Pisa, Rome, Venice), Prague, Cologne etc

pearldeodorant · 14/03/2019 21:10

Tallinn? Or st Petersburg; beautiful ballers too watch and plenty of history.

Purpletigers · 14/03/2019 21:13

New York ( 5 nights at least ) , Edinburgh , Dublin , Belfast , Amsterdam together if you’ve been separately . The tulip festival in April is amazing and worth a visit . Krakow , Prague , Denmark .

DingDongDenny · 14/03/2019 21:54

Edinburgh - can't guarantee it won't be cold, but other than that it should tick all the boxes and I would recommend the Sheraton One Spa

JaceLancs · 14/03/2019 22:01

Krakow
Prague
Edinburgh
York
Lincoln
Chester
Bath

DisplayPurposesOnly · 14/03/2019 22:09

When do you want to go?

St Petersburg if you have time to sort visa.

12thofnever · 14/03/2019 22:25

Edinburgh

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 14/03/2019 23:05

Krakow, museums, salt mine is incredible, Auschwitz is an experience like no other. We find car hire flights and accommodation very cheaply, eating out and very nice vodka was very very reasonable, about 70p for a large flavoured local vodka

jjandtheseagulls · 14/03/2019 23:15

You've basically described Budapest. Go there. You'll be fine regardless of brexit

HermioneKipper · 14/03/2019 23:29

More votes for Bath, York or Budapest
