Got married in 2017. Someone told us about marriage allowance in January this year so we applied on the gov.uk website (I'm a SAHM). All fine. Email from gov.uk confirming application. Letter through a week or so later from HMRC saying application successful. Another letter for DH a few days later for a refund for previous year. £200 odd. Letter legit from HMRC, still have it, it's a P800 letter. Claimed online through the gov.uk website. Could see the process of the refund on DHs personal tax account. Refund went straight into bank account a few days later.
Then today, another letter for DH from HMRC. They mistakenly paid him the money directly when they should have given it to Entitlements Agency Ltd. As a result, they will be taking the money back in next tax payment. The letter states we have a "deed of assignment" with this agency. Neither of us have ever signed any deed whatsoever. I do all the tax things online, my DH is not internet savvy. I know all this was done on the gov.uk website, it's still on our internet history. The confirmation emails and letters are all gov.uk or HMRC. No mention of any agency. But they're insisting it must have been a third party website. It wasn't. They could only give me the name of this agency. I've tracked them down but they don't even have someone answering their phone, you leave a voicemail or email and someone will phone you within 5 working days. We're baffled by all of it and now it could be a bloody week before someone even attempts to talk to us about it. HMRC basically said they could do nothing, we need to get this deed resigned. Still none the wiser what deed this is.
Has anyone had anything even remotely similar to this happen to them? Or offer any advice? We've been on the phone all morning getting nowhere.
