By Natalie Imbruglia are about ( abuse? )

Can't believe I've only just realised this!

It's not about abuse. It's a heartbreak song. She love in love with a man who turned out not to be an 'illusion' who fooled her. It's a song about opening up to someone, being vulnerable, falling deeply in love and then finding out he's fooling her around/cheating whatever.

ZaZathecat · 14/03/2019 08:44

It could be literally about abuse, but I've always heard it as metaphorical:

"I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel, I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor"

Natalie I did a cover of this song, it was written by someone else.

onalongsabbatical · 14/03/2019 08:51

Melodramatic metaphor. Lovely song, but don't take things so literally.

ChampionThreadKiller · 14/03/2019 08:56

I have to say that I didn’t think this song was about abuse, just about the breakdown of a relationship.

Under My Thumb though by the Rolling Stones, that’s a different matter! Wasn’t impressed when I actually listened to the lyrics. Shock

Have you seen Karaoke for the Deaf ?
It’s also on you tube with Natalie Imbruglia from The Secret Policeman’s Ball .

Imbruglias cover is almost identical to the original - band Ednaswap

The woman who wrot eit says she was jetlagged and feeling sory for herself, it is a breakup song. But I suppose "Bound and broken on the floor" could be read as somethng else!

diabeticsanon · 14/03/2019 09:15

she feels emotionally exposed as she'd put so much in to the relationship, feels ashamed that perhaps others could see it was wrong for her, feels left out in the cold by his indifference to her emotions.
hardly about abuse really is it ?

diddl · 14/03/2019 09:57

Anyone else now watching David Armand clipsGrin?

NCforthis2019 · 14/03/2019 10:07

It’s not about abuse - it’s about heartbreak Confused

americandream · 14/03/2019 10:09

I agree with the others. It's not about abuse at all. Just a problematic relationship, and the break-up of it.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 14/03/2019 10:27

diddl, I just wasted half an hour watching different clips! Well it brightened a miserable morning anyway. Grin

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 14/03/2019 10:34

I’ve always thought of it as a breakup song.

The first verse is obviously about how he has gone off the relationship and now isn’t interacting, no nookie, no affection.

Followed by the fortune teller (All her mates) being right that he wasn’t into her. But she was blinded by the holy light of him.

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 10:38

It's about coming to the realisation that he's not the man she thought he was.

ChocChocButtons · 14/03/2019 11:35

It’s about her breakup with David shwimmer

Frickssake · 14/03/2019 12:13

And is every breath you take about stalking?

OP posts:
cuervos · 14/03/2019 12:15

Yes

PBo83 · 14/03/2019 12:16

And is every breath you take about stalking?

Pretty much, it's amazing how many people think it's romantic.

I used to be a wedding DJ (eons ago). "Daddy-Daughter" back then were (in my opinion) thankfully rare but I did have a request for this and also for 'Brown Eyed Girl' in my time. I guess some people just live the sound of the sentiment rather than understanding the meaning.

mintich · 14/03/2019 12:19

Big mistake is about her breakup with David Schwimmer. She didn't write
Torn

lagerthaslovelyhair · 14/03/2019 12:21

She didn't write it did she? It's a cover.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 14/03/2019 12:25

The "we are young" song that came out a few years ago by Fun has a few dubious lyrics...

"My lover she's waiting for me just across the bar
My seat's been taken by some sunglasses asking 'bout a scar, and
I know I gave it to you months ago
I know you're trying to forget
But between the drinks and subtle things
The holes in my apologies, you know"

Bothers me every time I hear it

DontCallMeShitley · 14/03/2019 12:49

When it was released there was publicity about it being about abuse, I remember reading about it.

Abuse wasn't mentioned as much in those days.
