To ask for an ambulance?

I don't know what to do really.
Had a bit of leg pain and tingling the last day or so and wasn't concerned at all but I rang 111, because I had a pulmonary embolism a year ago I thought I should be cautious in case it was another blood clot.
111 people got a doctor from the local hospital to ring me back, she said she isn't concerned from what I've said but wants me to come to a&e straight away for bloods and scan.
I honestly feel fine and a little bit embarrassed, what if it's just a sore muscle or something.
But when I got off the phone I then realised I now have £3 in my bank account and about 80p cash, so can't get an Uber or a bus at this time. I'm a student so all my friends and family are in a different city. Should I ring 111 back and ask if they have a way to transport me? I feel well but if a doctor has told me to go to a&e then it's made me worried.

Oooh I did it. Felt wrong in a way but also strangely satisfying. Found out OP fed her family of 4 for £30 at Christmas! Well done OP. That's quite cheap for a Christmas slap up meal!

I would now get a savings jar and just chuck the odd £1 every now and then and keep it as an emergency fund.

LinenLou · 13/03/2019 22:13

Just to let you know OP, 111 don't arrange hospital transport for elderly people to get to hospital. The local authority this service, it is non emergency transport and based on eligibility Due to health conditions and mobility issues. NOT financial. 111 will only arrange an ambulance for an EMERGENCY situation. After all it is called ACCIDENT & EMERGENCY.
Phone your parents, phone your sister, phone every single friend you know to borrow some money for a taxi! Being young and naive isn't an excuse to be this ignorant about the health service.

Kindofnewtothis · 13/03/2019 22:14

Will deffo have some sort of emergency stash in the future, I have a few times but ended up spending it Confused

I broke my ankle and leg in 4 places, couldn't move without agonising pain and wasn't sent an ambulance. I had to stay at home for another full day and night until someone could bring me a wheelchair to get into hospital. (Various family were on holiday etc and husband couldn't manage me into the car himself as I couldn't even hop).
So in another words, no, you won't be sent an ambulance.

what an absolute total load of shit that this actually happened

Cheeeeislifenow · 13/03/2019 22:14

People on here are actual arseholes sometimes..keep us posted op, hope it's nothing.

AuchAyeTheNo · 13/03/2019 22:14

An ambulance is not a taxi.

Get a grip and sort yourself out.

boringlyboring · 13/03/2019 22:17

That PM was clearly just some ‘clever’ arsehole trying to test you OP. Plenty of them on this thread..

Hope you get it all sorted!

boringlyboring · 13/03/2019 22:17

snap Cheeeeislifenow threads full of them

Kindofnewtothis · 13/03/2019 22:19

Oh do you think? I thought it was somebody genuine, I felt rude not replying but I didn't know what to say like how to say no politely. I don't really understand why people think I'd make all of this up for money

OP posts:
Studentnurse1981 · 13/03/2019 22:20

Absolutely no way do you need an ambulance! Do not get one as its selfish and unnecessary. Go tomorrow or get someine to take u. Wake your parents up by ringing but DONT GET A AMBULANCE

Kindofnewtothis · 13/03/2019 22:21

Anyway I am almost at the hospital now so hopefully all goes well! Thank you everyone for lots of advice!

MarvinMarvinson · 13/03/2019 22:22

Glad it's sorted now but you absolutely can ring 111 back in this situation if you really have no other option. The service I work for can arrange transport if really necessary so they'd have either done that for you or been able to advise you if waiting til the morning was safe.

maccaroni · 13/03/2019 22:23

@dotty1970 I think I actually remember the thread when it happened!! @Kaytee87 didnt you post about it on here?

GirlcalledJack · 13/03/2019 22:23

I hope it all goes well, let us know how you get on.

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 13/03/2019 22:24

You ARE NOT being selfish in the slightest.

Having a PE is terrifying (I also had one a year ago and it nearly finished me off) and it looms over you like a cloud for a long time. Any time you get a leg pain, chest pain, any form of real or perceived (your mind starts to play tricks in you) shortness of breath you worry that it may be a PE and your last day on earth. The psychological trauma is comparable to the physical - I am still being treated for PTSD.

I'm glad your friend has managed to sort a taxi out, please let us know how you get on.

Lellochip · 13/03/2019 22:24

Glad your friend's sorted you out an Uber. I was going to suggest booking yourself one as I don't think they take payment until after the journey, then you just get a message in the app that payment failed, and you just settle up later.

Obviously not something I'd recommend normally, but desperate times and all that!

Good luck at the hospital

CandyCreeper · 13/03/2019 22:25

You thought it was genuine? they even called you hun 😂 it was a piss take obviously 🙄

BetsyBigNose · 13/03/2019 22:25

Hi OP - I'm glad you've managed to get some cash sorted for an Uber, what a relief!

I've had PEs 3 times and like you say, they are horrible and very scary. I was on Warfarin after my first lot and had more within a week of coming off the meds after the standard first 6 month period.

Stupidly, about a year later I had forgotten to renew my prescription and ended up with more - definitely learned my lesson that time though!

Anyway, my point is, you say you're on blood thinners, so have you had your INR checked recently? If you're still in therapeutic range, then it's unlikely to be more PEs - still worth getting checked out though.

One other thing, it might be worth speaking to your GP soon about keeping a supply of Clexane injections in the fridge at home. That way, if you every suspect another clot you can start treating it exactly as they will in hospital, without all the panic of trying to get there. Just a thought - something which I find reassuring to have on hand.

Good luck, I hope it turns out to be something incredibly minor and you're back home and tucked up safely in bed before long!

Take good care. Flowers

AuchAyeTheNo · 13/03/2019 22:25

People on here are not arseholes cheese

Try working in the NHS and seeing this daily. Grown adults who cannot take responsibility for their own health. It’s become such a nanny state that some of the general public don’t even try basic pain relief without requesting to see a specialist!

Drives me bloody mad

k1233 · 13/03/2019 22:26

Kindofnewtothis it's a bit bad your parents aren't contactable at night. What if there was a super emergency? My phone has a do not disturb function. I have it set not to alert for calls and messages after a certain time at night, but also have exceptions for family and close friends so that if they call, the phone will ring. Perhaps see if they have a similar function on theirs so you can reach them in emergencies.

Boysey45 · 13/03/2019 22:26

Let us know what happens,I'll check back in the morning. I hope you'll be o.k.

Kindofnewtothis · 13/03/2019 22:28

I'm really sorry to hear about your pe, for me the phsycological aftermath was worse than the physical effects. I think because I was so young and healthy beforehand, I'm sure this will be nothing but I'm glad I've come here tonight rather than tomorrow because I wouldn't have slept a wink!

OP posts:
Lougle · 13/03/2019 22:29

I genuinely didn't know what a "weed week" was, and as you gave that as a reason for not having money, I wanted to clarify that it didn't mean "I've needed to spend a lot on weed this week".

I'm glad you've got the money you need and I hope you're seen soon.

Kindofnewtothis · 13/03/2019 22:30

Because I'm on apixaban I don't have my INR measured, I think that's just if you're on Warfarin. God three times, you poor thing!
