To want a small engagement ring?

I don't tend to wear jewelry and can't imagine having a big solitaire ring banging into things for the rest of my life! Anyone with a small, band-style engagement ring regret it? Am I over-estimating how much of a pain they are?

I would rather small and simple for the same reasons

Zoflorabore · 13/03/2019 19:48

This is mine. It's unusual and I like it :)

That is absolutely beautiful op. Mine is big but very flat. I love it.

This is mine. Small and perfectly formed! I have child like hands and didn’t wear rings before I got engaged. Had my wedding band made to wrap around my engagement ring (as in the picture) to make one ring so that I could still wear it and a wedding band without feeling like I had lots of rings on.

These are mine. All heirlooms from my family. Wedding ring was my great nans, eternity ring was my nans and engagement ring was my mums.
But even if dh had got my rings himself I'd want something very similar. I'm a big jewellery person and do wear a lot of jewellery on a daily basis. But I wouldn't want a massive ring, it's not me at all. I like the classic solitaire engagement ring, 11 stone half eternity ring and plain band wedding ring.

I didn't get one. I cannot see the point of an engagement ring. Why is one party getting an extravagant (or not so extravagant) piece of jewellery a demonstration of commitment ? It is just archaic.

kb1992 · 13/03/2019 20:09

I have a solitaire type ring which I never take off and I don't even notice it if that helps x

My first engagement ring I went with the bigger is better approach.... I lost count of the number of times I poked myself in the eye or nose and it absolutely hurt like hell!

This time round DH had been told already that I didn't expect anything blingy but I would like a natural style, I. E. Alex Monroe. I have a beautiful quarter carat on a twig band, 22ct gold and I would not swap it for the world.

Margot33 · 13/03/2019 20:34

I don't like big stones as they catch on tights and tops. When I got married I only wore a band with tiny diamonds halfway around it. They lie flat, so they never snag anything. I love it.

bananamonkey · 13/03/2019 20:40

Mine is v similar to this although a square setting with a bigger sapphire. I dislike solitaires and wanted something a bit different, I like the flat setting as it’s very wearable and doesn’t catch on anything.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 13/03/2019 20:44

Mine is white gold. Eternity set with diamonds and sapphires. I love it.

I do also find myself noticing women who only wear wedding bands, and I have begun taking my engagement ring off...just to see. I like it.

Twotinydictators · 13/03/2019 20:53

Mines small too and cheap Grin If I'd had something expensive it would have been lost immediately! Not a massive fan of diamonds either...just another stone really isn't it?!

I have a small diamond in a bezel setting. I didn’t fancy the spikey look of most diamonds.

OwlBeThere · 13/03/2019 20:59

@whatelsecouldibecalled I really love those! Never seen anything quite like that before.

Oblomov19 · 13/03/2019 21:08

I wish I'd gone for a Humongous solitaire!!
Like Jennifer Lopez who spent a couple of million? Wink

My friend has a very flat star shaped ring. Its quite modern and unusual. She didny want something sticking up or catching because she is v clumsy

I wanted (and got) an eternity ring, because I didn't want to have to take it off and I am clumsy with my hands at the best of times. I tried wearing a cheap solitaire at one point to see how I got on and I caught it on everything. Have told my husband that in a few years, when we're past the baby/toddler stages, I'd like to get a nice solitaire ring. He got a motorbike, so I think it's only fair. Grin

Snap @canonlyhopexo, mine's very similar and I have weeny fingers (size G) - I've never caught or banged it on anything though, only accidentally scratched my face with it once when it was new Grin

Girlinstripedpyjamas · 13/03/2019 22:05

I want a diamond now. I’d love a second hand one. Where can I look at them online? Send links please! And to OP get what you like and are comfy in. The one you posted was lovely

MissPhonic · 13/03/2019 22:05

My new shiny ring. Totally not what I thought I wanted, chosen by DP. Totally in love with the 2 different shapes and the profile.

@KrazyKatlady I love that ring 😀

BluebellCockleshell123 · 13/03/2019 22:47

I always wanted a wedding ring engraved with ivy leaves the same as my grandmother's ring. Ivy symbolises eternity and fidelity and her ring was so graceful and beautiful. In the end it was going to cost far more than the ring was worth to get it engraved. I wish I hadn't bothered with an engagement ring and just had an ivy engraved wedding ring maybe set with some low lying diamonds.

So...inspired by my grandmother...what about something like this :

Ladybirdbookworm · 13/03/2019 22:51

I haven't worn my engagement ring for years .Now I only wear my wedding band and eternity ring.
My engagement ring is dated and has high shoulders which used to catch on clothing and door handles. I've been married 25 years and most of my friends and both my sister's are the same. Engagement rings date but a wedding band and eternity band stand the test of time.
