To want a small engagement ring?

I don't tend to wear jewelry and can't imagine having a big solitaire ring banging into things for the rest of my life! Anyone with a small, band-style engagement ring regret it? Am I over-estimating how much of a pain they are?

I have a solitaire engagement ring. A few years after we were married my husband bought me an eternity ring its like a wedding band with tiny diamonds.
I now wear this every day with my wedding band. I still love my engagement ring but find when kids were babies I stopped wearing it as it would sometimes catch them (and it not a big rock)

Go with what you like and feel comfortable with.

WishIwas19again · 13/03/2019 15:37

Definitely not unreasonable. A friends fiancee bought her a MASSIVE diamond solitaire and it's ridiculous, catches on things and as she's petite looks so oversized. I made very clear to my DH I wanted to choose any ring with him, and so glad I did, mine is small with a flat profile and I am not someone who wears or looks after jewellery so I'd say make sure you choose what you like and what suits your lifestyle.

These are my rings. I have really small hands I wouldn't have wanted anything bigger.

I have the tiniest engagement ring and the thinnest wedding ring we could find! That was my main criteria. I don’t dislike larger jewelled rings but prefer them for dressing up and going out- not every day. I really dislike thick wedding rings though, and love my very thin band

Drogosnextwife · 13/03/2019 16:00

That's mine and actually that picture is making it look bigger than it is. That's about the biggest I would have went, anything else would have got in my way.

I have a stonker of an engagement ring and I love.
BTW I got it after we married... so technically not an engagement ring.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 13/03/2019 16:16

It's all about the setting. Solitaires wouldn't necessarily be my choice, but there are styles where the stone is set flush with the band or which only protrude very slightly, and that might be the style to go for. Some trinity/trilogy rings have quite low or flush settings, too.

I'm definitely not a fan of big rocks. I'd much rather have a smaller one but with better clarity, colour, and a perfect cut than a cloudy bigger stone with visible inclusions.

Had to respond to this thread as I'm sorely missing my engagement ring! It's gone in to have the stones reset as a 10th wedding anniversary gift, and it's taking weeks! Wish the jeweller would get a rocket up their butt. I vants my prrrrecious .... :)

I'm just here for the ring photos.

YANBU. As lovely as the big diamond ones are, they aren’t something I’d usually wear. Mine is a really thin gold band with a tiny inset diamond and I love it. I once had a friend of a friend grimace at it and say ‘oh bless you, is that all you got for an engagement ring’. They cheek! I found it funny thankfully.

OwlBeThere · 13/03/2019 17:26

Mine is wooden and I wear it round my neck on a chain. I can’t cope with rings at all. I did try but I just don’t like how they feel. Get what you like and works for you!

Brightpinktulip · 13/03/2019 17:27

Mine is also Art Deco style and only a1/4 in total. I love it it's perfect for me and I chose it myself.

I have an upgraded ring but I don't wear it much, this one is so sparkly and unusual imo.

Very similar to this. Not everyone’s taste but it works for us.

Mine's an eternity ring which we chose together - I'm really clumsy so couldn't have a solitaire that would catch on things. I love it, it's practical and beautiful.

sarahb083 · 13/03/2019 18:48

Thank you for all of the replies! I've had a look around and found some lovely low-set ones as some of you have suggested - maybe something like this - cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0611/8345/products/Baguette-Engagement-Ring-3.jpg?v=1551620059

That's pretty!

I'm not a solitaire person. My fingers are too short and stubby and I didn't want to risk knocking out a stone while camping or snagging it on something.

Mine isn't diamond at all and is like a half-eternity type style. I love it. There was very little choice that wasn't diamond at the time we got engaged, and seeing the coloured stones, it really stood out from a bland crowd. I don't know if fashions have diversified now.

Alsohuman · 13/03/2019 19:07

That’s lovely, I like it better than mine!

NiteFlights · 13/03/2019 19:15

Mine’s set with tiny diamonds all the way round (like an eternity ring ... but smaller) - I wear it all the time and don’t wear my wedding ring. I think a solitaire would be a right nuisance as I do a lot of baking and DIY.

FraggleRocking · 13/03/2019 19:23

Oh, that’s gorgeous!

PissOffPeppa · 13/03/2019 19:23

I have a tiny engagement ring. It has a small sapphire and two tiny chips of a diamond either side. It’s not a band as such but it’s very flat so I never need to worry about knocking it into things or catching it.

I’ve been wearing it for 10 years now and love it as much as the day I got it.

canonlyhopexo · 13/03/2019 19:27

I always thought I'd want quite a big statement ring and my now fiancé (hate that word lol) got me something completely opposite and I love it. I would have looked ridiculous with anything bigger as my hands are so teeny.

I'm not a ring person at all so I didn"t want an engagement ring. I just have a plain wedding band.

Feb2018mumma · 13/03/2019 19:35

All the people I know with the big rings can't wear them day to day as they catch! Mine is inherited from my grandma, it's flat and it's really comfy, haven't taken it off in a long time Smile

libellule1 · 13/03/2019 19:41

I knew I didn't want a big engagement ring. I work in a hospital and can't wear it to work anyway, and didn't want to catch on clothes, scratch etc.
Very happy with my vintage-style ring though I only usually wear it on weekends/holidays. I think it's only .3 carats or something but looks bigger as its a trilogy.

Owlbethere I love that wooden ring! I also love the 1920s ones - I have a solitaire monstrosity of OH's grandmother's that I never wear now. He was all thrilled thinking I'd love it as I had quite a collection of large cocktail rings , poor chap cannot see the difference between a clearly non precious resin or ceramic costume piece and a genuinely valuable rock that Liberace might think twice about. Never mind the ethics of a lot of these diamonds...

Chocolate1984 · 13/03/2019 19:44

I don’t wear any jewellery other than my engagement, wedding and eternity ring. I originally wanted a Solitaire with a low setting but ended up picking something which which was everything I said I didn’t want- 3 stone, high setting. I have never caught my ring on anything and don’t even notice I’m wearing them. Try on lots of rings, even the ones you dint think you’ll like and you might be surprised what you end up with.
