To be worried about my passport

Anyone else worried that they won't be able to travel on their current passport? I'm going away in April and in May and all this passport talk is confusing me.

Anyone else traveling and in the same boat?

What exactly are you worried about your passport? Is it close to expiring?

My sons expires May '20.
Mine expires Oct 20.
But I've read that you need 15 months on your passport depending on where your travelling.

I don't want to leave it too late if I have to renew. Likewise I don't want to renew if I don't have to!

You will need 6 months if we exit in March. No idea where 15 months has come from. Just look at the government website that’s been specifically set up.

OP look at the government website and look up the countries you are travelling to. It will tell you there how long you will need to have on your passport for various countries.

Ok the 15 months has come from those who have had nine months added on to their passport from the previous one and so it’s a 10ur 9mth passport. The maximum amount a passport can be issued from, to allow travel is 9yr 6m.

They are no longer allowing that 9 months so 9m plus 6m = 15m you have read.

Best thing to do is to check the foreign office travel advice for the country you are visiting. The entry requirements for each country are given, some require six months after your trip, some only require validity for your trip.

There's a government website, you put your passport start date and expiry date, where you're travelling to and when, and it will tell you whether or not it will be valid.
I think the 15 month thing comes from passports with extra 9 months added on, that will no longer be recognised ( I think!)

When were the passports issued? That will tell you if you had any extra months added on at renewal, the complications are only for passports with months added on from the previous one.

The articles I've read really dont explain it well, it took me a while to work out what the issue is

The most any country I've heard of asking is for 6 months validity at the end of the trip.

I had to renew mine which didn’t expire for over a year because I had an extra 9 months added because my previous passport didn’t expire - I just changed my name when I got married. As we live abroad and I travel back quite regularly to see family I was really stressed to get it done in the window between two trips (which only gave me 8 weeks in total) I have to say the passport office service is amazing - they processed my application within a day of receiving my old passport, informed me of every move my application made and the new one should now be on its way to me. I’m just keeping my fingers firmly crossed that the slightly idiosyncratic postal service here doesn’t then manage to make the final step in the process difficult!

Whynotnowbaby Me and DH were in exactly the same position. Ours didn't expire until February 2020, but we added the unexpired when we moved house. We are going to Greece in June, and to the Med on a cruise in August, and both of our travel companies said that our passports would need to be renewed. We were a bit miffed but it is what it is. The Passport Office have been great, very quick. DH has got his back already, and I've had a text to say that mine is on its way.

Were going france in june kids passports expire august 2020 were all good. Need 6 months on passport on return date. We may need a permit to drive over there but thats it.

I read the whole article, the one which was sent to me. It didn't mention about months added on. It just said depending on if we leave without a deal, and depending on the country your travelling too.

Extra months are no longer added as that would make the passport valid for more than 10 years. You would have to renew early and would lose the extra months too

Think if you renew now you wont get the extra 9 months. Thats a thing of the past! You need 6 months not including the 9 months extra to travel in Europe if we leave with no deal - I think we will all be OK this summer though as we will be in a state of limbo after they extend the leaving date

Yes, you could have an issue, your six months left period will be Nov 19 as I understand it but as long as you are back by then I think you'll be OK but I'm not an expert

Yes probably as it should be only valid until May 2020. You will need to renew early if you plan to travel in 2020
