I'm really enjoying the thread in here about what is the best money you have ever spent, so thought we could do a reverse one?

Mine is spending ££££ on genuine Jo Malone perfume, smelt heavenly for all of 20 minutes then just totally faded away to nothing Angry

I bought three large and one small suitcases last year for Christmas presents.

My dad's one the wheel broke first holiday (last Jan)

My small one split at the seems on its second trip (not even abroad)
My large one came off the plane with no wheel on it's 3rd holiday.

Only one large one left now that has only been on a plane once so I don't have big hopes for it.

I tried to lodge a complaint, the company I bought from went bust last year! Worst £400 I ever spent!

Husband got an electric bike brand new for £1000 didn't really take to it left it in garage. Got round to selling it on and battery is flat but won't recharge . This apparently invalidates the guarantee. it shouldn't be kept below 40% charge a new battery is £295 !!!! Grrrrrr!!!!

£14 quid for a small tray of olives from a stall at a "farmers market" in Cardiff.

I don't even like olives. Confused

Oh yeah, I once paid over £5000 for a new front door and window. Paid the deposit in the showroom, and returned to pay the balance a few days after the work was completed. There was a huge "50% off" promotion being advertised! I begged and pleaded but to no avail, if I had waited another week and a half I would have saved myself about £3000!

£200 on puppy training classes and £120 on a day with a dog trainer.

The puppy training classes were just awful. My dog is a toy breed and the trainer couldn’t hide her distain for any dog that wasn’t bread for hunting, hearding or retrieving. There were far too many puppies in the class to get any kind of one to one help and my dog was too distracted by all the noise and other puppies to learn.

The one to one trainer wasn’t terrible, but she lost my trust the minute she started talking about being an anti vaxxer (both for dogs and humans). There was really nothing she taught me I couldn’t have learned from YouTube.

A few hundred quid on a bunch of expensive ‘vintage’ looking dresses I convinced myself I’d wear. They were very heavy with all tulle lining and were mid length, so the way they hung in the middle of my shin and made my already short legs look dumpy and cankle-y. My boobs barely fit in and they were very unforgiving. I kept telling myself I just needed the right event and left them in my wardrobe for months, tags still on. I think I had this image of me being this sexy glamour puss when the fact is I’m more comfy in jeans and trainers! Also found out most of the 'real' models on their site wear corsets underneath so that's partly why they fit them so much better...

Also takeways in my 20s, would hate to think how much I spent on mediocre food when I was hungry and couldn’t be bothered to cook..

habibihabibi · 12/03/2019 16:53

Laser hair removal on waaaay too far hair. They didn't let on it wouldn't work and ended up with burnt hairy skin. Shock

we used a cranial osteopath with DS1 too, as he just used to feed constantly (every 20 minutes).

got to 4 months, and DW was on her knees (he wouldn't take a bottle, so i couldn't help).

he had 2 sessions with osteopath (said one of his skull plates was misaligned, and the sucking sensation relieved the pressure).

at same time we started him on baby rice (up yours "got to wait til he's at least 6 months" health visitor).

he was a different child.

but don't know if it was osteopath, or actual solid food that sorted him out. so that might have been a £100 waste...

£600 on a pair of 'made-to-measure' Hmm John Lewis curtains about 18 years ago. I picked the material to go with the three-piece suite we had at the time; well, it looked OK in the sample but a fussy clashing disaster when hung up. And there was a two inch gap between the curtain hem and the window sill. Unfortunately I didn't complain as the house was new build with a book full of snags and it was a full time job nagging the builders on site to fix them all - curtains weren't a priority when water pipes weren't attached correctly.

We still have those curtains (don't ask - non standard size, confidence in choosing colours/patterns non existent, finances, family, more to life). And I still hate them. When I do replace the buggers I can't wait to burn them.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 12/03/2019 17:09

PMSL at Rolf Harris being on a par with the likes of Caravagio

GallicosCats · 12/03/2019 17:14

Never mind maslin you could probably save the suit for Halloween instead. Grin

SingaSong12 · 12/03/2019 17:26

(Parents actually as it was a present I asked for.) Having my colours done (colour me beautiful). I think they may be correct but I never actually take them to the shop/bother to dig them out at home. Plus the agent knew I went to church and told me if I had prayed hard enough God would have cured my disability.

BogstandardBelle · 12/03/2019 17:55

Lol i came on to say cranial osteopathy for an unsettled / crying / constantly feeding newborn too! It was total woo and didn’t make a blind but of difference... but just as she finished DS1 did the most enormous poo-nami, which went in for at least 10 minutes!! It was spilling over the top of the nappy and everything. And the bloody woman didn’t miss a beat - she went straight into saying «of course, this treatment often encourages the child to expel all the tension and stress that they’ve been experiencing...» while this noise and fountain of poo just kept on coming... of course it turned out he was just a normal newborn baby.

sparkling123 · 12/03/2019 18:08

Laura Mercier translucent setting powder for my wedding day makeup. About £30 and I've used about 1/2 a teaspoon of it in 5 years. Complete waste of money.

FlipperSkipper · 12/03/2019 18:25

£250 on a sleep consultant when my baby was 5 months old. I was desperate and had no support.

ijustneedagoodshake · 12/03/2019 18:27

@Purplecatshopaholic

Me too.

The old joke springs to mind,

What do you want for Christmas

A divorce

I wasn't planning on spending that much!

VoyageInTheDark · 12/03/2019 18:33

Posts about cranial osteopathy and sleep consultants make me glad I didn't give in to the temptation when I was sleep deprived and desperate as I considered both. 18 months later I'm still sleep deprived but I know nothing will make DD sleep and I'm better off spending the money on cake to make myself feel better

millythepink · 12/03/2019 18:37

I was sorely tempted to try several woo therapies for DD because for the first three months she was just constantly miserable and wailing, never slept more than 2 hours together. In the end my lovely Mum said 'ignore the midwife darling and start feeding her proper food'. Within 2 days DD was a different baby, contented and sleeping in 5 hours stints. I love my Mum Smile

I accidentally bought scented sanitary towels. That’s £1.50 gone. I even want to donate them to the food bank, they are EVIL.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 12/03/2019 18:41

I dont even want to donate them to the food bank.

ijustneedagoodshake · 12/03/2019 18:42

Are we allowed to do a selling thread off the back of this?

WBWIFE · 12/03/2019 18:42

Breast implants at the age of 18, had them removed aged 20! £4500 for 18 months use ha

Missmarplesknitting · 12/03/2019 18:42

Fixing the mortgage for 5 years only to watch rates tumble.

Ugh.

exLtEveDallas · 12/03/2019 19:00

I spent £110 on a fabulous pair of heeled, knee high boots on sale one January - I think the original price was closer to £250. They were beautiful, totally 'not me' and led me to buying 2 skirts and 2 tops that I knew would look great with them. I had never spent that much on myself in one day (and haven't since).

I wore them that night (with one of the outfits) and had loads of compliments. I was on top of the world!

The following day I broke my ankle in 5 places.....Not only did I never wear the boots again, I can't wear any heels now.

I kept them for 5 or 6 years, returned to their box, lovingly wrapped and treated like fine china - finally getting rid of them when we were packing to move house.... I actually cried.

Bacardi101 · 12/03/2019 19:00

I recently bought a new bed side cabinet and set of draws for my bedroom with £500 of my very hard earned savings! The evening after they were delivered the kids knocked their toy pram into it and the glass shattered, I nearly cried and apparently the shop I purchased it from doesn’t offer warrant/repairs. Gutted!

HarrysOwl · 12/03/2019 19:08

£25 for little fish to eat my feet as a 'pedicure'.

Spoiler: feet felt no different whatsoever. Just wet.
