To ask the most basic thing you never knew/misunderstood until adulthood

I feel like a completely ridiculous excuse for an adult but the other day I found out the difference between cottage pie and shepherds pie.

I am in my 30s and gobsmacked (also feel a bit stupid now it's so obvious). I genuinely thought they were the same thing.

Is there anything you discovered as an adult that was just common knowledge to everyone else? Or perhaps there's a phrase you've found out you have been saying wrong all this time etc...!

Help me feel a bit better.

That ABBA are the initials of the first names of each of the members.

Happyhusband · 11/03/2019 16:38

I really never understood why a pink rabbit was used to advertise a brand of batteries until quite late in life.

RubyWho · 11/03/2019 16:40

They’re called Daffodills. Not Dafilldills.
Found this out yesterday. I’m 33.

A Scape Goat. Not an escaped goat. I was 29 when I found that out.

Moot point. Not mute point. Ashamed to say I didn’t find that out until I did my BPTC. THE SHAME.

ChanandlerBongsLeftShoe · 11/03/2019 16:42

RubyWho an escaped goat Grin okay, that made me feel better!

I didn't know the ABBA one!

Had to smile at that, Chanandaler. I wonder what happened at school today, because my kids came hone saying "Mummy, is cottage pie made from cottages and Sheperds pie made from Sheperds?"

Slowknitter · 11/03/2019 16:44

I can't think of any, but I looove these threads Grin.

SabineUndine · 11/03/2019 16:44

That Arabic is written from right to left.

SabineUndine · 11/03/2019 16:45

BTW I make my shepherd's pie with beef mince, whatever anyone says.

Undies1990 · 11/03/2019 16:46

That we never see the other side of the moon! I just assumed it rotated, like the earth 🤯

Imfinehowareyou · 11/03/2019 16:46

I thought guest ales in a hotel bar were just for the guests and the local customers couldn't order them.

Huntawaymama · 11/03/2019 16:46

That's the whole point it's not shepherd pie then

ChanandlerBongsLeftShoe · 11/03/2019 16:47

WinterHeatWave clearly they really need to start teaching the important stuff in schools!

Until very recently I thought a fire blanket was something you wore to protect you as you fled the fire, like a magic fire shield so you could run right through fire and be fine Blush

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 11/03/2019 16:48

@Happyhusband the energiser Bunny predates the vibrator

Magenta82 · 11/03/2019 16:48

That the main characters in "Fried Green Tomatoes" were in a romantic relationship.

I first watched it when I was about 11 or 12 and thought they were best friends. It is one of my favourite movies and I watched it regularly, at least a dozen times before I twigged in my late 20s.

I was watching it with a friend when I suddenly exclaimed "OH THEY'RE LESBIANS!!!" She gave me a very withering look and I felt very naïve!

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 11/03/2019 16:48

Oops too soon - I meant to add, assuming that’s what you’re getting at?! Grin

Houseonahill · 11/03/2019 16:49

imfinehowareyou That made me laugh 😂

SemperIdem · 11/03/2019 16:51

I was in my 20’s before it dawned on me that Australia had time zones. Blush

In my defence, I think learning that China had only one official time zone may have muddied the water there.

boomfloom · 11/03/2019 16:51

Undies1990 The Moon does rotate around its own axis. It's just that it rotates at the same pace as it orbits the earth so we always see the same side.

burritofan · 11/03/2019 16:54

Omg Magenta82, same! It's like when you realise Penny has an abortion in Dirty Dancing and isn't just a bit poorly.

I still picture the Elgin marbles as spherical and the Underground Railroad as, well, an Underground Railroad – despite knowing better, it's just ingrained.

ChanandlerBongsLeftShoe · 11/03/2019 16:54

Well this is going to be educational!!

CabbageHippy · 11/03/2019 16:57

not to stick something metal into a toaster - yep only found out as an adult!

ShirleyPhallus · 11/03/2019 16:59

That we never see the other side of the moon! I just assumed it rotated, like the earth

Wait, what?!

missmouse101 · 11/03/2019 16:59

That to pay someone is 'reMUNerate', not 'reNUMerate' as I'd always thought! Grin
