Have given into a long temptation and bought a slow cooker. Despite wanting one for ages - now have a bit of a “block” when working out what to cook in it. Have browsed online for inspiration but find that the main food sites don’t have obvious categories and the niche ones are full of bloody ads - so thought I would ask the wisdom of mumsnet.

@MyKingdomForACaramel the skin doesn't crisp but you can put in the oven for the last 20 if you like. I add some carrots, onion, mushroom, herbs and chicken stock to about 1/3 hight of the chicken then leave it for 4-6 hours depending in how much I want the meat to fall off the chicken. I only do small chickens as there only 2 eating chicken.

Everything! Raw meats (Chicken etc) Sausages for sausage casserole, mince - chilli con carne & Bolognese. Potatoes. Ok so not everything, but stuff that saves you the faff when cooking on hob etc from fresh.

Brisket is good

Also bung in chicken thighs and shred for nice soft chicken for sandwiches and wraps

I do find everything tastes a bit 'slow cooker'ish though.

I think you can do nice rice things where the meat cooks and makes a nice gray that gets absorbed by the rice, but haven't got round to that yet

Pulled pork or chicken. Porridge overnight. Upside down cakes. Whole chickens and then make stock with the bones, and soups with the rest. Baked apples or pears are amazing in it. You can make pie fillings, soups, sooo much. I still prefer my instant pot though. I cook everything in it.

I’ve always been nervous of doing a whole chicken in the SC in case it doesn’t cook properly.

Do you put extra liquid in with it? And for how long ? Can someone please advise what to do? Thanks Smile

Lamb shoulder slow cooked for 6-8 hours on low in a bit of stock, red onion, garlic. Then about an hour short of ready, I add a jar of Al Fez apricot and coriander tagine sauce and a tin of chick peas with chopped fresh coriander. Serve it up with cous cous. Heaven!
