Have given into a long temptation and bought a slow cooker. Despite wanting one for ages - now have a bit of a “block” when working out what to cook in it. Have browsed online for inspiration but find that the main food sites don’t have obvious categories and the niche ones are full of bloody ads - so thought I would ask the wisdom of mumsnet.

I made porridge in mine & it was the most disgusting thing ever - burnt and with a horrid texture. What did I do wrong?
I do: bolognaise, but make it is a pan first otherwise it is gritty, a whole chicken, gammon joint, stock and that's about it! Oh, I made a nice Lancashire hot pot recently.

Jamiefraserskilt · 11/03/2019 15:10

There is an excellent book on Amazon called dump meals for slow cookers. easy, tasty and not stew.

Omzlas · 11/03/2019 15:11

Joint of beef - lob it in with half an onion and leave it for 7 hours. Pulled beef.... lush! Would also work for pork I think

Curry too but cook your tomatoes though first or they'll make it watery

Penguincake · 11/03/2019 15:11

YABVU this is the wrong thread for this.

MereDintofPandiculation · 11/03/2019 15:13

Chocolate cake with pears.

DH did a decent slow roast of gammon with orange and honey sauce at the weekend.

Justgivemesomepeace · 11/03/2019 15:13

Gammon, chilli, spag bol, curries, chicken casserole, pork steaks, braising steak, anything really. I love mine.

lavenderbluedilly · 11/03/2019 15:14

Rice pudding
Mulled wine

Wherearemymarbles · 11/03/2019 15:17

Fantastic at making stock.
Pheasant o vin (instead of chicken)

I found chicken becomes stringy and mince goes grainy so only really use for stew type dishes

SilverySurfer · 11/03/2019 15:24

I've found everything I've tried in a slow cooker is inedible so use it to make scented candles now, for which it's perfect.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 11/03/2019 15:26

they are all making fudge, cooked breakfasts and bread on the fb group i fell into

even fish fingers on one memorable occasion. Hmm

UnaOfStormhold · 11/03/2019 15:31

Mustbetime Porridge needs to be done in a second pot over water.

Cornbread and dal are good in the slow cooker (though I confess I only use my instant pot these days). Slow Cooked by Miss South has some lovely and very varied recipes - her pomegranate and fig relish is delicious.

BlooperReel · 11/03/2019 15:33

I've done curry, chilli, soups, hot chocolate, a joint of beef. All came out brilliantly.

BlooperReel · 11/03/2019 15:34

Oooh also braised red cabbage at Christmas, very successful

OpiesOldLady · 11/03/2019 15:35

If any of you are on Facebook, then you really need to join a group called Slow Cooked Wonders. There's a recipe file that has nearly 900 recipes in it and you'll get loads of hints and tips.

Dixiechickonhols · 11/03/2019 15:42

Cottage pie in mine now.

Mustbetimeforachange · 11/03/2019 15:44

Una I put it in a second pot, but no water. Do you do it over night? Presumably otherwise there's no point. I'll try again.

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/03/2019 15:45

Chilli
Bolognese
Whole chicken
Basket
Dhal
Veggie curry
The bbc website can be searched for slow cooker recipes too.

barbiegrl · 11/03/2019 15:50

@GreenFingersWouldBeHandy nope just as I wrote-chick it all in and forget about it- the chicken releases all its juices and is yummy :) and sooooo easy

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 11/03/2019 15:51

Thanks @barbiegrl I'm definitely trying this one!!!

MyKingdomForACaramel · 11/03/2019 15:52

OP posts:
JPduck · 11/03/2019 15:54

Pulled pork
Sausage casserole

Pinkbells · 11/03/2019 15:57

Half leg of lamb in red wine, stock and rosemary and garlic, gammon (which you can glaze for half hour later in the oven), Bolognese, chilli, ragu. Steaks in red wine and shallots. Seven hour lamb.

Letty7 · 11/03/2019 15:59

This thread has inspired me to dig my slow cooker out from the back of the cupboard. But unlike you, I'm now really craving a nice stew! Anyone care to share their favourite stew recipe?
