To be so bloody confused about car seats?

I have a DS he is 2.4 months and 17.5kg. He has recently learnt to physically unclip his car seat harness so I'm trying to come up with a solution.

I stop as soon as I can but do lots and lots of dual. Carriageway and motorway driving so it is often miles before I can stop.

I was looking at the bumper shield car seats but they seem to be 18kg limits for the shields?

I'm so confused :(

Yeah they aren't safe to use after 18kg, they need to be harnessed or belted.

Is it that he presses the button to undo the clip? If so someone recommended sticking the prickly side of some Velcro to it as toddlers don’t like pressing it because it’s uncomfortable.

How strong is your child, OP? Have you thought about entering him into professional thumb war competitions?

@nombrecambio he is massive and can with ease (as we discovered at the hospital this week) open those heavy fire doors and move furniture that his 4 year old sister can't move. He has an incredible physical ability but his understanding doesn't match up yet.

Tried the tape thing. Then I moved him to the front so I can stop him before he does it which was fine until we were on the motorway and he tried to open the bloody door after undoing the harness we had 11 miles until I could stop

Which car seat is he in? You can get hondi style straps but you have to get ones for your make/model and not all companies do them.

Dd was 5 months older than your little one and I told her she can only undone her car seat when we stop and I tell her she can. I always get er to undo her own car seat at the end of the journey so it’s not novel and she knows she will be allowed to do it soon.

Impact shields are very controversial. You need to get him an ERF seat which harnesses to 25kg. It will be a belted seat rather than isofix. There are a couple of recommended devices to stop them undoing the buckles but the Velcro would be a great start.

Any device that you add to your seat to stop the buckle being undone is illegal. I understand it might be a needs must situation but just to make you aware they actually aren’t allowed.

We had to get the Joie Bold because DD was nearly 18KG at 2.5 years And this one goes to 25KG harnessed, we also got the Be Safe clip because she was constantly getting out of her straps.

We’ve got an impact shield and my ds has been able to reroute the seatbelt out of the cushion since he was about 18 months old. Although fortunately he only does it when we get home rather than on the road. So I definitely wouldn’t recommend them for a Houdini.

Wow, my nearly 4 year old is 16kg and 50th centile. At 2.4 that weight is off the charts....

I didn't think those clips where legal in the UK.

There are a number of seats that now go up to 25kg, I'd be looking for one with a very stiff buckle. He's to young to be in just a seat belt and you'd probably find him climbing out of it.

And of course I would advise an extended rear facing until at least 4 years old. It’s FIVE times safer than forward facing

Op your 2.4year old is 17.5 kilo! That’s 38.5 pounds. My four year old is 33 pounds. Are you sure you have weighed him right that’s very overweight.

My friend swore by 'Houdini stop' buckles to keep her two very large and strong boys in their seats.

MigGril I believe they are fine as long as they are used on the seats they have been tested on so we used the besafe one with our besafe seat.

He is very tall too! There is only about 8cm between him and 4 year old sister who is also tall for her age so I have big kids. He is proportionate and he gets weighed quite often at the hospital so it's accurate

I can't afford an ERF car seat that ERF to 25kg and also is compatible for my car so that's out

You need a 25kg harnessed seat so your options are quite limited. The forward facing Joie Bold is £140 but the rear facing Britain Two Way Elite is £185 - not much extra for five times safer.

@namechangerd no, no isofix. It's an old car with virtually no room in the back

Do you know why the TWE isn’t compatible OP? there’s a few FB pages who could help you, they’re very informative and I often see them getting round issues.
