All these children dressed up on tv and fb for world book day look lovely and happy, but AIBU to think shop bought costumes, especially standard princess costumes are a lazy choice?

Fuck off.

Stinkytoe · 07/03/2019 11:19

Why does it matter if they are the lazy choice?

onedsrightnow · 07/03/2019 11:20

Pull on your judgey pants there!

thefirst48 · 07/03/2019 11:21

Where am I going to find time to make three costumes when I go to a shop and buy something that would be better. If my daughter wanted to be a princess then she can be a bloody princess!

OMGithurts · 07/03/2019 11:21

Shop bought and proud here. Who gives a shit? Some people are amazing at creating costumes and enjoy it. Neither applies to me. Why should I bother?

Is it just the mums, who generally sort the costumes, who are lazy or is it the dads as well?

MardyMavis · 07/03/2019 11:24

Yep I agree....but then if you don't have time to make you do what you gotta do I did my own took me 10 mins this morning only because I'm not spending £15 on a supermarket costume that is £3 in the sale the next day.

PhannyPharts · 07/03/2019 11:26

I'm one step worse - I put my son in a gruffalo t shirt we already owned because I'm not able to justify spending £18 on a costume for one day.

I love seeing other children in their shop bought costumes, I marvel at the skills of those who can make them and I am in solidarity with those who dont have the time or budget to give it that much thought

but then, I'm not a judgemental arse

Wavingwhiledrowning · 07/03/2019 11:27

I thought WBD was for children to celebrate books and reading, and have fun. Not for judgy adults to get all snobby about where the costumes came from. FFS.

EnglishRose13 · 07/03/2019 11:28

I made a costume because I'm a cheapskate.

PassTheGinPlease · 07/03/2019 11:29

I paid £10 for a Minecraft head.

Lazy and proud over here

whatsthepointthen · 07/03/2019 11:29

I have 3 children at school and a baby at home No I dont have time to make 3 costumes!!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 07/03/2019 11:29

I wouldn’t do shop bought only because of the money wasted, commercialism etc. but don’t think it’s lazy. Sheesh, actually having to traipse out to the shop?!?! DS went in normal clothes just like the character he’s portraying - now THATS lazy😉 would have loved to do more but the more effort i put in, the less likely he is to wear it!

ps1991 · 07/03/2019 11:31

Mardymavis I agree. I do understand that it must be difficult if you have multiple children etc. I more feel it’s lazy as world book day is supposed to celebrate a child’s favourite book. Therefore buying shop bought is limiting children’s choice and limiting them being able to choose a character from their favourite book. Children going dressed as princesses/superheroes make me think that the majority have only seen these characters in films/ on tv.

Its not fucking Get Your Parent To Prove Their Skills With A Needle And Thread day though, is it?

It's about books. If you're dressed as a book character you're done.

x2boys · 07/03/2019 11:33

Yabu yes.

Nicpem1982 · 07/03/2019 11:37

Yabu and judgy

Sweetbabycheezits · 07/03/2019 11:38

You know what would be better than judging costumes?? Write to local councils who keep closing public libraries. Realise that if schools want literacy to improve, then a well stocked school library, managed by a professional librarian will actually achieve that.
All the dressing up is lovely, but reading has to be championed in schools every day, all day, in all subjects.

Katebob22 · 07/03/2019 11:38

Yes YABU.

wildbhoysmama · 07/03/2019 11:40

Loads of us use something we already have ie princess/ dinosaur/ pirate/ spidernan dress up costume! Mine was a donkey today ( eeeoh donkey is a favourite book) we have a donkey onesie already ( bday present) and I just put on face paint. Lazy, not really, it took though for the face! And I wasn't making a bloody ' the boy from the snow queen' costume!! Stop judging.

wildbhoysmama · 07/03/2019 11:41

sweetbaby definitely. Have you read the Caitlin Moran piece on closing libraries- brilliant.

arethereanyleftatall · 07/03/2019 11:42

Eh?
'The children look lovely and happy.'
Great.
Yabu.

sunshineandshowers21 · 07/03/2019 11:44

my kid’s school decided that instead of dressing up as a book character kids could wear their pyjamas and took their favourite book in instead. but if they had done the dress up as a character i’d have sent them in shop bought costumes. i’ve got three kids and far better things to do than piss around making costumes that will be worn for one day and then forgotten about!

gower4 · 07/03/2019 11:47

If everyone just went as Matilda or Charlie Bucket there'd be no work involved at all! Problem solved all round.

Milicentbystander72 · 07/03/2019 11:47

Well I'm a children's book illustrator and I've just been tweeted the sweetest photo of the cutest boy in a SHOP BOUGHT (gasp) dinosaur onesie holding a picture of my book.

It's made my day.

Sweetbabycheezits · 07/03/2019 11:48

Thanks wild ! I haven't read it, but I will!
