Prison abolition?

Can anybody explain what happens without a prison system for violent/repeatedly violent criminals? I get the argument that these make only a small number of inmates & the idea that many inmates shouldn't be there. I also get the idea that the system is institutionlly racist etc. I get also that prison is said not to work, and even make some worse, it is often not a deterrent etc.

Right, so we use other forms of justice, like restorative justice? I get how that would work for a lot of people, particularly where the crime commited isn't violent/didn't have as much of an impact. I also understand the idea that if we change some of the social/environmental factors that lead people to crime, this is better than punishing them after the fact.

All that said, does prison abolition not have a little too much faith? Surely we all know there will still be violent people out there, psychopaths, sadists, who want nothing more than to hurt and carry on hurting. What do we do with people like those? Where do they go? How do you keep them away from people in a place with no prisons?

If we keep them somewhere but just don't call it a prison, is that not the same thing basically, just with some reforms?
