Help please!!! I’m not spontaneous whatsoever, I talk myself out of everything and my geography is terrible

I’d love to take my DH away for his birthday for some much needed quality time together. We live in NW and Unfortunately can only 2 nights due to work/children. We’ve done Chester, York, Windermere, Edinburgh etc to death. I want to go somewhere quirky and romantic, but most of all not predictable! Willing to drive/train a couple of hours!? Any suggestions from anybody?

Abroad would be ideal but don’t want to waste time travelling on planes etc just for 2 nights!

What about Northumberland? Lots of posh spa type hotels, Alnwick Gardens is quirky and romantic and the beaches are lovely.

Fabulous scenery, great walking.

North wales is doable from NW the snowdon region is fabulous,

I took dp to a spa hotel in Northumberland for his last birthday, it was nice.

Glasgow is a surprisingly nice city.

Thanks very much for your suggestions! They are all great suggestions, i like the idea of Northumberland, I’m going to look at Alnwick gardens, like the idea of nice beaches! Glasgow is interesting to, We’ve already done Edinburgh so that’s interesting!

Herefordshire is just gorgeous, stunning scenery. Would also second Northumberland, Bamburgh Castle and Alnwick are beautiful (best wait til Easter to see the spectacular gardens at their best). If you want nightlife, head into Newcastle afterwards.

We are nw and are doing a weekend in the lakes soon. Beautiful area if you like being outdoors and so much more than just Windermere

The treehouse restaurant at Alnwick Gardens can be super romantic! Make sure you book ahead.

Peak District? Eat Bakewells and walk them off 😂

Alnmouth has a wonderful beach and is a really gorgeous little place. Very easy to get to Alnwick from there too.

Walwick Hall is a really stunning little country house hotel (with spa) if walking Hadrian's Wall appeals. Nearby Hexham is a lovely little market town with The Beaumont Hotel now a great place to stay (and eat).

All in Northumberland.

Fort William, climb Ben Nevis (or just look at it!), visit a whisky distillery and get the steam train to Mallaig.

Hadn’t thought of flights: can fly from Manchester to Newquay in under an hour. Cornwall is spectacular, on a sunny day I don’t think there’s anywhere more beautiful than St. Ives

How about Conwy, the Great Orme and Snowdonia incl Betws y Coed? Heaven on earth as far as I'm concerned. The view of Conwy castle as you drive over the bridge is unforgettable and the Great Orme and has Copper mines that you can explore which are Bronze Age i.e. 4,000 years old. There are numerous excellent B & B's in Llandudno and cottage rentals near Conwy with incredible scenery.

If you do end up in Alnwick, there’s the most amazing Italian restaurant just before the arch on the main road towards the castle. Think it’s opposite the theatre and is called Versuvio, I think. It’s been years, but whilst it’s not super posh the food is amazing. You couldn’t book and think they only took cash. It may have all changed now.

Barter books is also interesting if you like books.

I spent a lot of time in the area as my ex lived there for a year. Stunning place. Very quiet!

North wales, perhaps Anglesey? Absolutely gorgeous area of the country.

Lots of other places in the lakes - Keswick is one of my favourites.

What about Lincoln? Gorgeous city. Or somewhere like Whitby?

If you fancied a city break Manchester has TONS of restaurants and hotels and theatres and historical landmarks depending what your into. There's plenty to do and see and it's not terribly priced either :)

The Isle of Arran, 1 hour ferry from the mainland at Ardrossan. Scotland in miniature, climb goatfell, go to the the castle if you have national trust membership it’s recognised at Scottish National trust sites, go to the distillery, Arran aromatics, Arran cheeses....it’s a great wee island. DH loves driving onto a ferry (you kinda need a car if you want to explore properly)

Liverpool. Or Leeds.

Bristol too, but may be too far.

Dd and I had a lovely long weekend in Cardiff last summer.

For unpredictable, this would be unbeatable I reckon. . . Either fly from Manchester, or drive, to Glasgow airport. Then fly to Barra. Only a shortish flight and you land on the beach. It's absolutely amazing, take a look.
The beaches are like the Caribbean, dining, and you'll have time to island hop if you hire a car.

I've no idea what the random 'dining' is about (there is food, obviously )
