To not want to call DH a different name...

Name changed as this is outing.
I think DH has lost the plot. Last night he told me for some time he has been considering changing his name. He would like something more formal. His (current?) name is traditionally a nickname and there is no more formal equivalent. He was a musician but is training to be a secondary teacher this year. I love his name, and can’t imagine calling him something else but if it’s his name...

My XP wanted to call our first son Lord. Er, no. Hmm

JazzerMcJazzer · 06/03/2019 23:37

I hope that he is considering Princess Consuela Bananahammock.

Reaa · 06/03/2019 23:45

I'm guessing his name is something like Rex and he wants to change it to something like William.

I can't see how you can stop him, if that's really what he wants to do but he will have to update passport, driving licence, bank accounts etc with his new name once it's changed.

Could he just have a "known as" name instead of changing it officially?

OwlBeThere · 06/03/2019 23:54

If he wants to change his name that’s entirely up to him surely?? You’ll get used to it.

OwlBeThere · 06/03/2019 23:58

I don’t understand all the people saying why do you have to call him something different? ...presumably because he wants to be called something else?!?

Bignosenobum · 07/03/2019 01:28

sorry was he born a musician or has he always had a musical name?

Bignosenobum · 07/03/2019 01:30

cannot be as bad as Meghan Markle. I always thought this name was daft. Especially as real name Rachel Winsor totally gorg.

missyfafa · 07/03/2019 07:37

TELL US THE NAME! Grin

bobstersmum · 07/03/2019 07:41

Well it can't be worse than Aramis. That's what dh wanted to call our first child (a boy) actually Aramis Babel. We are not hip, or out there in any way so I have no idea where it came from.

It's from one of the Narnia books - The Horse & His Boy. Pretty sure Aramis is a girl, though Smile

OwlBeThere names are not something people give themselves in any naturally occurring situation. We are named by those around us. Choosing your own name is very artificial. If this guy has a name he hates of course the possibility exists to change it, but not to demand people who he's introduced himself to by name 1 call him name 2.

Damntheman · 07/03/2019 08:29

@XXcstatic Aramis is one of the three musketeers!!

Aramis is one of the three musketeers. Definitely a bloke.

Damntheman · 07/03/2019 08:41

I think the Narnia character is Aravis, which is REALLY close! That one is a girl.

XXcstatic · 07/03/2019 08:59

DOH! Of course you are right Grin

CornishMaid1 · 07/03/2019 09:06

Most nicknames have a long form (even if it is a bit different - Harry is the nickname for Henry for example).

Is there any way to shorten the nickname to make it better - rather than being Danny be Dan or Fred instead of Freddie, depending on what the name is.

bobstersmum · 07/03/2019 09:57

Damntheman yes he explained Aramis was a musketeer, as if that was its selling point. Still nope. Haha.

Damntheman · 07/03/2019 10:19

Bob that is hilarious 😂😂 at least he wasn't gunning for Porthos!

bobstersmum · 07/03/2019 10:34

Well that would have been the next one wouldn't it! We have 3 dc now, can you imagine me posting in baby names, help with a sibling for Aramis. Erm, well Athos or Porthos it would have to be!

Damntheman · 07/03/2019 12:06

Then there's always D'Artagnan for DC4, although if you ask me you're asking for trouble with that name Grin

canadianbanana · 07/03/2019 13:13

As others have pointed out, Armanis is from The Three Musketeers, written about one hundred years before Narnia 😂 and yes, a bloke!

canadianbanana · 07/03/2019 13:15

Sorry, Aramis, not Armanis. Bloody autocorrect!

DogInATent · 07/03/2019 13:36

Or Dogtanian :D
(you probably have to be a certain age...)

Ninninannanoonoo · 07/03/2019 15:25

Well, thanks a lot for the earworm @DogInATent Grin

Seaweed42 · 07/03/2019 15:31

There's something else going on. He is struggling with having to take on a 'new identity' as a teacher next year. He doesn't really think the 'old' him is up to the job.
I would just reassure him you love him the way he is. Tell him 'there's nothing about you that needs changing, not one little bit. Your name is fine'.
