Erythromycin - violently ill

Litluts · 05/03/2019 18:28

I was prescribed erythromycin yesterday. 2 tablets to be taken 4 times a day. I've had 10. I have been violently ill since about noon today. And I mean constant nausea, vomiting profusely (literally just liquid bile).
I have stopped taking them (last ones were taken this morning).
I rang GP surgery at 3pm to speak to a GP but they had all gone home Hmm

Is there anything I can do to stop the nausea? Or do I have to wait for it to come out of my system? The leaflet lists it as a side effect 'feeling sick or being sick', but it only says to report the side effect, not what the fuck to do about it.

I'm already on lansoprazole for my stomach. Would taking one of them help? I can honestly say, I've rarely been so violently ill in my life.

Bastard things. I feel like I've been poisoned. Angry

Not sure if it's relevant, but I'm allergic to penicillin?

Sorry for posting on AIBU. But I've posted here for traffic. I've never felt so bloody sick in my life.

AIBU to post a General Health query on AIBU? [GRIN]

Probably worth ringing or visiting your out of hours care to get a new ab prescribed. Hope you're on the mend soon!

LunaTheCat · 05/03/2019 18:32

Poor you . Erythromycin makes me violently ill too. It is the antibiotic doctors use when you are allergic to penicillin.
It should go as the antibiotic gets out of your system.
Drink as much as you can.

Litluts · 05/03/2019 18:33

I'll go back to GP tomorrow. I'm more concerned with how to stop the vomiting.

This made me feel really sick. I had to get a different prescription. Hope you feel better soon

Tomtontom · 05/03/2019 18:34

Speak to a pharmacist. Medications, interactions, side effects etc is their specialism.

67chevvyimpala · 05/03/2019 18:34

Makes me very I'll too.
Do you have any charcoal tablets?

peoplepleaser1 · 05/03/2019 18:35

I'd suggest speaking to a pharmacist if you can find an open one, or call 111 for advice.

Litluts · 05/03/2019 18:35

No, don't have charcoal tablets. I'm too bloody sick to try to get to a pharmacy now too. Sad

Erythromycin is notorious for being poorly tolerated.

chesterfuckingdraws · 05/03/2019 18:37

I found out I was allergic to penicillin this way. Initially thought it was the infection but OOH dr though it more likely the penicillin.

They switched me on to something else and I quickly started to feel better-probably about 36hrs after the last penicillin.

I was just advised to drink plenty fluid -lemonade with the fizz stirred out was better than water for me and I tried to eat plain crisps and crackers until I could stomach proper food.

You have my sympathies, it was possibly the worst I have ever felt.

BillywigSting · 05/03/2019 18:37

Erythromycin is vile, made me violently ill too. Agree with pp talk to pharmacist or out of hours gp. You need a different antibiotic. Get gp to put a note on your file too so that they know not to prescribe it to you again in the future.

Litluts · 05/03/2019 18:37

Well never again am I taking it! Fucking thing! FFS. Why do they still prescribe it if it can make you this ill??

I had this exact reaction. My GP said it was an allergic reaction to them likely as I also react to egg white and this group of antibiotics is cultured on egg white.

Stop taking them, the vomiting will stop in a few hours once they are out of your system.

See your GP/Out of hours as soon as you can for alternative antibiotics or penicillin (if you can take it)

💐 as I’ve never forgotten how violent that vomiting was, I couldn’t walk upright for days as I’d pulled all my stomach muscles.

TheDarkPassenger · 05/03/2019 18:40

My son got really ill from it too! I get an upset tum with penicillin (literally my poo smells like antibiotics as it flies out of my arse) but I wouldn’t even try Erithromycin after my sons reaction! I think it’s pretty common unfortunately :(

Spudina · 05/03/2019 18:41

Bless you OP, you are also allergic to Erythromycin! It's not Penicillin but this reaction shows that you are allergic to this too, as allergies can manifest in different ways. The vomiting should stop as the drug gets out of your system. Your body thinks you have been poisoned and is cleverly getting rid of the poison for you. You could ask for an anti sickness medication if it continues. Taking a lansoprazole might help if you feel the typical acid reflux type pain. Ginger is supposed to help with nausea (doesn't me!) Speak to your GP about an alternate antibiotic if you haven't had the course. And to document your allergy.

67chevvyimpala · 05/03/2019 18:42

It gave me nephritis.

I thought i was dying

Nat6999 · 05/03/2019 18:43

I was prescribed Erythromycin for a chest infection, within 24 hours I was throwing up like something out of a horror film. I've never been able to take it since.

Litluts · 05/03/2019 18:45

I've just taken a lansoprazole. It's not acid vomiting if that makes sense. It literally feels like I've been poisoned.

OP posts:
Litluts · 05/03/2019 18:46

God almighty. It's awful. Sorry to hear the rest of you suffered. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

OP posts:
67chevvyimpala · 05/03/2019 18:49

Yep I'm allergic to penicillin too.

I would never let my kids have this

YukoandHiro · 05/03/2019 18:53

Poor you. It's a disgusting antibiotic. I didn't actually vomit on it but felt terrible and also developed tinnitus which reduced after the course but has never completely cleared.

What was the antibiotic for? There may be a third alternative.

Litluts · 05/03/2019 18:54

Nephritis? Isn't that kidney failure or something? Shock

If it doesn't stop soon, I'll have to go to an OOH doctor or something.

OP posts:
Litluts · 05/03/2019 18:54

The antibiotic is for an infection in my hoohaw! Grin

OP posts:
BeanTownNancy · 05/03/2019 18:56

My reaction was severe enough it's listed as an allergy on my medical notes. I will never willingly take it again. In the hospital right now on antibiotics, but sure as hell not erythromycin.
