To ask if anyone has had a baby at 36 weeks gestation?

I'm booked into have my baby by section on Monday or Tuesday at 36 weeks due to baby having no fluid. I've had 2 lots of steroids in preparation, but I just wanted to hear others stories who have had baby at a similar gestation. Did baby have to go to nicu? Where there any short term problems? How long did you/baby have to stay in hospital? Were they a good weight? Thank you

5 of mine were born around that gestation.

3rd was born at 36+0, 5lbs 4, bit of a low temperature so she was under a portable heater for a few hours, feeding monitored, home after 2 days, no scbu

5th was born at 35+4, steroids a week previously after a bleed, 5lbs 12, absolutely fine, 24 hrs obs then, home 24 hrs after she was born

6th was born at 36+0, 6lbs 7, a few hours under a heater to maintain temperature, then 24 hrs of obs, then home the day after he was born.

7th was born at 35+5, 5lbs 9oz, waters broke due to infection (waters hadn’t broken by themselves before), labour then started later that day, he was taken straight to scbu when born - hospital policy for any babies born before 36 weeks and also he was grunting a bit. He had IV antibiotics for 2 days, tube for feeding for 7 days until he was taking all bottle feeds, 24 hrs phototherapy for jaundice, lost weight so needed to stop losing weight and put some back on and take all bottle feeds before he could come home which he managed at 8 days old.

9th was born at 36+1, 6lbs 2, all ok, feeding fine, no temp issues but had to stay in 3 days as our hospital policy had changed and now its 3 day stay for babies born 36-37 weeks to monitor feeding then weigh on day 3 and if they’ve not lost more than 7% they can go home, he lost 6.9% so we were let home!

My middle child (DD2) was born at 36+2. EMCS at 2.43 am and she came out roaring with temper. Pretty much roared with temper for 24 hours then chilled out. No NICU needed, needed a bit of help to work out feeding but once she stopped roaring and realised that she needed to suck she fed like a milking machine. We were in for a week as it was a EMCS. She is now a hulking great 14 year old but she still roars with temper when pushed.

Meant to add, all mine were spontaneous births.
Also they were all quite sleepy for the first month, woke for feeds but then straight back to sleep, very little awake time, was quite a shock when my 8th was born at 39 weeks and had a lot of awake time!

JaceLancs · 05/03/2019 22:51

DD was 37 weeks 6lb 7oz no ICU
DS was 35 weeks 6lb 5oz no ICU
Both healthy and are now 27 and 25!

wlv12 · 05/03/2019 22:54

My waters broke and I had a natural delivery at 35+1. Baby was 5lb 1oz, was sleepy and struggled with breastfeeding so we stayed in 4 nights for support.
Not admitted to NICU, stayed with me on the ward but under the care of NICU staff who came to check his blood sugars on a regular basis.
He had 1 x dose of steroids.

honeyrider · 05/03/2019 22:54

DS2 was born 4 weeks early, spontaneous labour and weighed 7lb 6oz. He was put in an incubator for a few hours to monitor him. I breastfed him and he fed well from the first feed. He's a strapping big lad now at 21 years old.

I was born 6 weeks early back in the 60's, all of my family have early babies.

Kpo58 · 05/03/2019 22:55

My DD was born at 35+6 weeks 4lb 5oz and didn't go to NICU. She did get some jaundice though, but stayed with me during its treatment.

fabulous01 · 05/03/2019 22:56

I had twins.
No problems whatsoever and the steroids really helped

Dollymac · 05/03/2019 22:59

Dd born 36wks, natraul delivery. She was 5lb 13 and we were home in about 20 hours. No problems at all. Same with other DD who was born at 34 weeks. Every baby is different. Try not to worry.

minipie · 05/03/2019 22:59

DC1 34+0, 4 lb 15
DC2 36+6 6 lb 12

DC2 didn’t go to NICU, no jaundice or any other issues, basically a totally normal baby. Very different from DC1 who was in NICU for 3+ weeks.

One tip: if you want to breastfeed I would advise starting to hand express colostrum into small syringes from when you give birth (midwife should show you how) or even from now if they say it’s ok. An extra squirt or two of colostrum helps clear any jaundice and also the expressing will help bring your milk in.

Also be prepared that they will be “newborn” for longer eg you may get smiles at 10 weeks not 6 weeks and they may want to be held a lot more than the average newborn. A bit of an immature tummy (eg slight reflux) is also common. But all this will even out pretty quickly.

Brummiegirl15 · 05/03/2019 23:01

I had my baby girl at 34 weeks, weighing 5 lb 3 oz, 9 days in NICU and tube fed as she had feeding issues. She slept a lot those first few weeks and I had to wake her every 3 hours to feed her during the night. In January so was cold and dark.

I had steroid injection but only managed one out of two as she came too fast as my waters went

But she’s 3 now and a little madam

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 05/03/2019 23:07

I was induced at 35+6 for pre-eclampsia, DD was born next day 6lb 4. She had trouble controlling her temperature and sugars till the next day but other than that she was fine. She didn't have to go to NICU but we both had to stay on the post natal ward for a week, me for my unstable bp and DD for jaundice, which is totally normal for premature babies. A doctor who specialises in premature babies came to see us and told me that all premature babies are jaundiced and suffer jitters and explained what they will do, what I can do etc. I also couldn't breastfeed her despite trying as she was very sleepy and trying to feed exhausted her very quickly. Also same as pp said, had to make sure I fed her a certain amount every 4 hours because she would just sleep through feeds.

She's 8 month old now, absolutely perfect and just crawled for the first time today Smile

Potplant · 05/03/2019 23:14

Twins at 35 weeks. Both just over 4 lb. dt1 was in SCBU for a few days, DT 2 straight into ward with me. No short term or long term problems they were always 'corrected' age for all the milestones. Both healthy strapping 6 footers now.

try to get as much rest as you can and good luck.

saturdaysspentcleaningohdear · 05/03/2019 23:37

Bit random but I was born at 36 weeks :-) I was 5lbs and went home the same day. I'm a fully grown woman now with no health issues 😃 this was 27 years ago and I now work in a career with babies born at much earlier gestations 😊😊

BikeRunSki · 05/03/2019 23:45

DS was born by emcs at 36+5. Spontaneous labour. We went straight on the main post natal ward. He struggled to feed and lost a lot of weight over his first week but avoided SCBU by having a bottle of formula when he was7 days old. We stuck to bottle feeding after that. He was 7lb 10oz, so a very normal size. MW has been predicting > 10 lbs full term. He’s now a very tall, very healthy 10 year old.

shereebobbins · 05/03/2019 23:46

I did. He was 5.7 Had to stay in hospital for 5 days as he was jaundiced.
He slept all the time so I had to wake him to feed him so it took 10 days for feeding to get established, but he was breastfed until he was 12 months old
There was no other problems.
He's just become a Daddy himself.

BitOfAKerfuffle · 05/03/2019 23:59

Had a 36 weeker. 2 doses of steriods. Born at 6lb 7 had a 1 week hospital stay for jaundice and feeding never on tube feeds just a difficult to feed baby. Longer term 3yo we have some health issues relating to chest mainly on long term steriods. Was it related to prematurity we will probably never know the answer to that one.

Good luck OP

whywhywhy6 · 06/03/2019 02:23

Yes and they were fine. No NICU and no ongoing issues. Good luck and try not to stress.

sosososoTiredagain · 06/03/2019 12:37

No they had no idea why it happened especially as id had steroids I had an elcs because there were problems with me he was expected to be fine they really only said steroids as an extra thing but that he may not even even need them but I’m glad they did now in case it actually even helped a bit

PurplePattern · 06/03/2019 12:50

Yes, 36+4 due to me developing pre-eclampsia. 5lbs. No NICU. He needed a feeding tube, had to be put under lamps twice as he was losing body heat and a bit jaundiced. In hospital for 12 days (but that was due to me developing HELLP)
Very healthy now, is almost never ill!
Best wishes OP Flowers

Hi ladies I wanted to say a huge thank you for all your comments and reassurances they really meant a lot at a stressful time. Freya Rose was on Monday at 36+1 weighing a tiny 5lb 11oz but is absolutely perfect. We do have to stay in hospital till at least the weekend till she is meeting certain requirements but she is in with me, so no nicu time thank fully. I just can't stop staring at her. Thank you for the hand hold ladies

Hi, my DD was born at exactly 36 weeks. I’d been in preterm labour since 34 weeks and had two does of steroids like you. She was 4lb 9oz and was treated for jaundice but other than that had absolutely no other problems. She gained weight very quickly and by 12 weeks was up to the average weight of any other 12 week baby xx

MMama18 · 13/03/2019 08:06

Didn’t realise this was an old post! Congratulations!! Xx

HighestMountains · 13/03/2019 08:12
