To ask if anyone has had a baby at 36 weeks gestation?

I'm booked into have my baby by section on Monday or Tuesday at 36 weeks due to baby having no fluid. I've had 2 lots of steroids in preparation, but I just wanted to hear others stories who have had baby at a similar gestation. Did baby have to go to nicu? Where there any short term problems? How long did you/baby have to stay in hospital? Were they a good weight? Thank you

My baby was 36+2. He was 6lb 2oz and perfectly healthy. I went in to spontaneous labour and didn't have anything to help him develop. He needed no extra care. I had an EMCS and we were in hospital for 48hrs.

I hope everything goes well for. Thanks

Dothehappydance · 05/03/2019 18:54

My waters went at 36+3 and came early hours the next day. 7lb 1oz. A nursery cot was on standby but not needed. Despite being a good weight he had not really laid down any fat and was very stick like and was in small baby clothes for a long time as even newborn hung off him.

He was a difficult baby (which just continued) but that wasn't due to when he was born.

Jade94 · 05/03/2019 19:17

I had ds 3 in November at 36 weeks spontaneous labour so had no steroids or anything like that my waters just went. He was born weighing 6lb 14oz. We had stay in over night just so they can monitor blood sugar but that was just routine cause he was born before 37 weeks they said. He did have jaundice but all 3 have his just lasted about 2 weeks and he has a milk intolerance which no-one in our immediate family has allergies but alot of full term babies get allergies too so couldn't say that was solely cause he was born at 36 weeks :)

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 05/03/2019 19:19

Induced at 36 weeks due to pre-eclampsia. Baby was scanned day before and legs measuring short. She came out at 6lb and legs were perfect as was she. No issues. Went home a week later due to my own issues afterwards.

Grosserygangrule · 05/03/2019 19:28

I had ds at 36.6, he was 6lb, waters just went for no reason. Stayed in as they wanted to check him for infection in case reason he came early and was a little jaundice but totally fine, grew as expected and a happy little boy now. Good luck

GroundhogWeek · 05/03/2019 19:29

Yes, both mine were born at 36 weeks exactly.
First was an emcs after failed induction due to lack of growth. Went to NICU for a couple of days due to low blood sugar and jaundice. Was 6lbs at birth but lost a lot of weight and took a while to put it back on which was stressful at the time, you wouldn’t have a clue now though.we failed to establish breastfeeding, a lot of which I think was due to how long we were separated at the beginning.
Second was an elcs, brought forward due to failing placenta. Was in NICU for five days with low blood sugars, jaundice and some other ‘wonky’ blood results, also lost a lot of weight but has been steadily following her line since we were discharged a couple of weeks ago. She initially had a feeding tube both in hospital and at home but has now established breastfeeding well. I was a lot more pushy with the midwives second time round to make sure I was up and moving as soon as possible after the c section so I can be with her in NICU, the first time round I was more timid and they ended up not getting me moving for nearly 24hrs.

I was born at 36 weeks over 30 years ago. I was in hospital for a bit, but no long term health problems at all. My brother was born at 34 weeks and he didn’t suffer any long term effects either. Both perfectly healthy.

TakeMe2Insanity · 05/03/2019 19:38

Ds born via csec at 36+6 due to no later csec dates (xmas). Perfectly healthy. 5lb 12. Went home 2 days later. No steroid required.

Twotinydictators · 05/03/2019 19:50

My DD was born at exactly 36 weeks - I was in hospital for 2 weeks beforehand with pre-eclampsia. She was 5lb15 and didn't need any additional support. She was a sleepy baby and needed waking regularly for feeding for the first week or so but gained weight steadily and caught up in clothes size by around 6 months. Never really thought of her as premature, probably because she didn't need extra care. She is now a wonderful 7 year old! Hopd all goes well Flowers

Kaddm · 05/03/2019 19:56

Not 36, but 37+0
Thin baby, difficulty latching
But managed it and no other health problems
2 days in hosp
No nicu

My cousin had a baby at 36 weeks for iugr and was in hospital a month. But that baby is now 10 with no ill effects

Good luck. 36 weeks is not bad imo

TerfectlyImperfect · 05/03/2019 20:04

Emergency csection at 36+2 due to placenta praevia. 6lb4 and no problems other than very poor suck reflex. He looked small for a few months and was at the slower end for early milestones but he’s a strapping five year old now and you really wouldn’t know. Hope all goes well for you OP Flowers

bobdylannumber1 · 05/03/2019 20:07

I didn't but my sil first son was born at 34 weeks just before Christmas 2015. He was 4 pounds teeny tiny was in an incubator but I'd now a very healthy 3 year old little sweet heart hes healthy and no problems I think he was 4 pounds

slithytove · 05/03/2019 20:09

Yes, he was 36+4, section after failed induction. Weighed over 7lbs, a touch jaundiced but no other issues, we went home within 48 hours

dadadadadabatmum · 05/03/2019 20:15

My little boy was 36+3 - no steroid injections and was induced early as had stopped growing. He was 4lbs 9oz of absolute gorgeousness. No NICU and home after three days as he was a bit jaundiced.

I was so worried but he was perfect, just little!

sleepwhenidie · 05/03/2019 20:20

DS2 was born at 37 weeks - induced because he was very tiny and they didn't know why, he was being scanned every fortnight from 20 weeks on and then fluid dropped at 36 weeks. That scan was 21 December and they got me in on 29th. He was born weighing 4lbs and apart from a bit of jaundice (requiring light blanket for a couple of days) he was totally fine, no need for SCBU or anything else. At 5 years old he started growth hormone therapy, the reason for his lack of growth both before and after birth.

Exhaustedmummy1811 · 05/03/2019 21:57

Thank you so much for all your reassurance it's really helping me feel calmer. I have a scan tomorrow and will probably be admitted straight after for monitoring until early next week when we will have our section. She was weighing 5.8lb yesterday and has been along the 50th percentile since 29 weeks and with the steroids as well I'm hoping this will put her in a good position at birth. It's just all the unknowns and worrying I think

DrMadelineMaxwell · 05/03/2019 22:03

Hi OP,

I had very, very little amniotic fluid at one of my scans - way off the bottom of the chart that was on the wall in the consultant's room, which explained why I measured small for dates. They weren't that concerned really. I had to go in every other day for monitoring, but there was no talk of steroids or Csection. Instead, I was booked in for induction when I got to 37 weeks, but instead I went into labour naturally at 36 weeks. DD was 6lb 2 and needed a little light therapy when she got jaundice, but no other treatement and wasn't in NICU.

I put it down to the lack of fluid and thought that I would get to term with DD2, but she was born naturally at 36 weeks eary.

sosososoTiredagain · 05/03/2019 22:05

Yes-he was in nicu for 7 days scbu for 1 day and rooming in for 1 day
Despite steroids he has trouble breathing, fluid in lungs, an infection and was very sick for the first 48 hours.
He is fine now except for a few v minor non nicu related issues

makingmammaries · 05/03/2019 22:05

EMCS at 36+3 for uterine rupture. Baby was in NICU overnight, then developed jaundice. All was well within a week or so, and she is now a lively 6 year old.

Exhaustedmummy1811 · 05/03/2019 22:25

@sososo did they ever give any explanation for baby's problems? That sounds quite a lot for the gestation, my consultant seems quite confident that at 36 weeks especially with the steroids she won't need nicu and baby should do quite well. But your situation sounds very scary, hope little one is doing well now

drspouse · 05/03/2019 22:28

5lb 8 sounds a great weight. My DD was only 6lb 2 and she was officially term (38 weeks).

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 05/03/2019 22:31

DS was 36+5 vaginal birth, waters broke early, seven pounds nine, after being told he was small (I would've been in trouble if he'd gone to term...). He did have jaundice and struggled to feed initially but only because of tongue tie, we were out in five days and he's now an exceptionally long (tall?) three month old, even without taking into account that he was early. You'd never know now.

WeeDoughball · 05/03/2019 22:35

35 weeks exactly, 2 lots of steroid injections, 3lb 14oz. Was worked on when born and taken straight to nicu but thankfully no medical issues, just small and no suck reflex yet so was in nicu then scbu for 16 days with a NG tube.

36+6, 2 lots of steroid injections round about 31 weeks (long story!), 6lb 3oz and straight home within 24 hours. Due to that 1 day they initially wanted him classed as 'prem' and in for a few days but having had an actual prem baby we could see there was a huge difference. He could feed for a start and didn't sleep constantly!
