I’ve seen quite a lot of threads on here where families seem to have a huge amount of disposable income .
Im a single parent without a huge amount and wondering if I am in the minority on here ?
I’ve noticed there seems to be more people with lower incomes on netmums ? Am I generalising or have others noticed this also

Is a PHD totally out of the question? Part time? Career development, talk to HR about company sponsorship?

OdeToDiazepam · 05/03/2019 20:52

Well I'm absolutely skint til payday and I've been here for years!

Ninkaninus · 05/03/2019 20:53

Sigh. *rich people

XingMing · 05/03/2019 20:58

Nink, did I say anything about fulfillment? Wink It's a hamster wheel.

Ninkaninus · 05/03/2019 21:01

Someone did...Something in the vein of, if they’re so busy in their highly paid, fulfilling jobs, why are they on mumsnet. Which really doesn’t make sense.

summerisgone · 05/03/2019 21:04

I don't believe a lot of what people say on here.

I was also a bit Hmm when someone said they inherited £250,000, and they need advice on what to do with it. I was like REALLY??? Wink

XingMing · 05/03/2019 21:04

I don't think they were talking about me! I'm retired, and ancient. This is how I fill my endless days. More interesting than volunteering for the National blinking Trust.

Good point though.

CountFosco · 05/03/2019 21:06

I can't. I would need a PHD.

Are you sure? I work in Pharma, the majority of my colleagues (senior scientists) have PhDs but not all (the ones that have worked their way up know a lot more than the poor sods who come in with a postdoc or two). The board have hardly any. I know it depends on the field but it may be possible to get to where you want without one, or, as Xing suggests, to get the company to sponsor you do one while working.

XingMing · 05/03/2019 21:07

If you put my wrist on hot coals, I'd speculate that they are the bored SAHPartners of the Masters of the Universe.

Ninkaninus · 05/03/2019 21:10

I don’t think it’s a good, or valid point, at all. But I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on that.

Anyway, I don’t even know why I cared enough to comment on this, so I’m gonna knock it on the head now and get back to my glass of wine. [ wink]

XingMing · 05/03/2019 21:16

Sewing bee beckons! If you want a cheerleader Claire, and think I might be helpful, please ask. See CountFosco's comment!

sighrollseyes · 05/03/2019 21:17

Lots of stealth boasts go on here!
I find them entertaining to read and think that despite their millions of pounds their lives are so dull and boring they have to post it on Mumsnet to pass the time of day!

clairemcnam · 05/03/2019 21:29

xing I am on my late 50s. I made a sideways move and downwards move to cope with the disability I have. No one is going to pay for me to do a PHD at my age. I was working very long hours and studying in my late 20s when I got very ill. I have a disability that was not diagnosed until then. I cut back my hours to ordinary full time and dropped the study, and managed to slowly get better jobs. Then as i got older got worse again and had to take a job with less hours and easier.
But it is fine. We all have limitations.

Oblomov19 · 05/03/2019 21:31

Agree with pp that it's better than it used to be, not so much the 'Islington massive'anymore!

Arnoldthecat · 05/03/2019 21:34

I keep it nice and simple. I'm classless and i do not recognise any class structure. Its all shite.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 05/03/2019 22:02

Thought it was so funny that this was below your post OP, made me giggle. And I think proves your point Wink

PortiaCastis · 05/03/2019 22:07

If I had that £250,000 I'd not be on Mn asking how to spend it.

anniehm · 05/03/2019 22:38

There's a huge variety here, and remember some of who now have decent incomes were once low income when our kids were small, it's just we aren't spring chickens!

thedisorganisedmum · 05/03/2019 22:45

I think that people who can spend all day on here are either unemployed - for any reason, but are home all day, or have jobs senior enough that no one is checking their internet use in the office.

or you have the middle ground of people killing time when commuting!

PickAChew · 05/03/2019 23:25

Aye, 250k would pay off our mortgage, replace our tatty kitchen, tatty bathroom and knackered shower room and still give us over 50k to play with.

DH fanally got rid of his mum's house, last week, giving us a total of about £4k towards that.

Fiveredbricks · 05/03/2019 23:28

Not in the minority but it has always been aimed at "middle class Mummy" types and less of Netmums "you ok hun"/500000 christmas presents type. Looking at the special offers and discount codes they run should tell you that much.

PrismGuile · 05/03/2019 23:41

There are a lot of rich people and a lot of not rich people on here. Those with less money tend not to mention it...

febel · 06/03/2019 17:39

I agree...didn't used to seem to have that vibe when I first joined many years ago. I certainly don't have a cleaner, and go on expensive holidays...can't afford it. But I could tell you differently..you wouldn't know......it's like Facebook and all the on line social media sites.......

TatianaLarina · 06/03/2019 17:46

The person with the inheritance windfall is on a joint household income of 40 grand a year iircc. So hardly rich just lucky.
