Smoking weed - what’s your take on it...

I don’t know much about it but on balance think it should probably be decriminalised. However, it is addictive and it obviously can have a negative impact on people’s lives and mental health. It does seem very prevalent around my part of London - I feel like I can smell it in the street all the time when I am out and about.

All for full legalisation. We can tax it, control who it gets sold too and control the potency of it. Meaning we can make it weaker / less potent.

But I'm for full decrimilisation of all drugs. If someone chooses to possess a small personal amount then i don't think they should face prison time and a criminal record for it. Offer them an addiction treatment programme and go after the dealers not the users

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/03/2019 01:24

It should be decriminalised and taxed.

Tiscold · 04/03/2019 01:25

Also look at portugal and the benefits decrimilisation of drugs had on the country as a whole.

@Nicenewshiny. Couldn't the same be applied to alcohol. Most people can deal with it but a minority can't cope when taking alcohol, become addicted, violent etc?

AlexaShutUp · 04/03/2019 01:32

My main problem with it is the smell. Nasty, strong, sickly smell. I find it disgusting, it makes me feel quite ill.

If the smell could be contained somehow, then I don't think I'd have strong objections to it being decriminalised. However, I'm not sure if there has been sufficient research into the links between cannabis and poor mental health, so I'd like to see that investigated a bit further before we made it a free-for-all. I've definitely noticed a pattern amongst those who use it regularly, but not sure if that's correlation or causation.

tablelegs · 04/03/2019 02:03

I don't smoke it but I don't care if others do.

whatwouldyoubelikeat28 · 04/03/2019 02:17

I dont mind it, I have it sporadically for social occasions and also quite like it for putting me in my body, its nice for stretching, yoga, swimming. I have very high anxiety and it def takes the edge off when I'm highly stressed, doesnt bring on any paranoia for me.
I think much like alcohol people can take it regularly and be high-functioning, and others get really affected by it. I don't think people should drive on it.
I like the smell, but I live in a warm country where mostly we only smoke outside anyway so it's not a problem with building up in houses. It's quite common at social gatherings.

SallyVating · 04/03/2019 02:54

I'm not a smoker (although I had the best sleep ever on the couple of times that I did.

Almost everyone I know smokes weed. Most of them are absolutely fine. Smoke a joint to unwind at the end of the day. However there are some who smoke it almost as soon as they wake up in the morning. Those are the ones who probably have an issue. One of those people is frequently abusive and nasty to her partner and her mum. I mean hideous bullying and vindictive and nasty, violent too sometimes.
How do you feel with someone like that? Who creates scenarios in her head and if you dare to query then youre off the film.

I dunno. Sorry for the big rant x

MrsTerryPratcett · 04/03/2019 03:08

Much less harmful than alcohol. I'm also in favour of decriminalizing all drugs and legalizing and taxing marijuana.

It's ridiculous to criminalize so many people. Treat the actual issues, rather than creating more issues.

SD1978 · 04/03/2019 03:16

Its the same as alcohol. Impairs your abilities, and turns you into a mumbling mess or a giddy giggler when over used. It's as bad as alcohol, it is addictive and anything you need to use nightly in decent volumes to 'relax' makes you an addict. It affects developing brain chemistry. It need more testing to see if (without) the THC it has medical advantages, as everything so far is annecdotal from those it's worked for- nothing about the many it hasn't! But I believe it could have some benefits. I don't believe it's a gateway drug as such, but feel it's vastly minimised by addicted users with all the usual crap excuses pulled out to minimise their addiction. It destroyed my marriage, it I believe it could and should have pharmacological status and prescribed use.

steff13 · 04/03/2019 03:17

I don't think it should be illegal. However, I don't like smoking of any kind.

MrsTerryPratcett · 04/03/2019 03:21

as bad as alcohol

It really really isn't. Alcohol withdrawal can kill you. Alcohol overdose kills tens of thousands a year. Alcohol related violence is epidemic.

You might not like cannabis, I don't, but it doesn't compare in any way.

TheQueef · 04/03/2019 03:52

I'm a cannabis user.

It really is skunk that's the baddy here. Cannabis has been in use 5000 years it is the genetic modified skunk or cheese that are showing any issues. Or if course spice which was invented to circumnavigate laws and is not related to cannabis.

This war on drugs is all well and good but it doesn't work and we end up with prescription addicts.

I'm enthused with the advances in vaping. That should get rid of the anti social aspects.

U2HasTheEdge · 04/03/2019 04:52

DH developed psychosis after smoking it then got diagnosed with schizophrenia. He was obviously predisposed to it in the first place but we do wonder if life would be different for him if he never touched it.

It could well be that he started smoking it because he was becoming ill and he was trying to block out the feelings.

I used to love the odd joint. I don't do it anymore simply because I don't know anyone to smoke it with these days and DH can't touch it or be around it.

MistressDeeCee · 04/03/2019 05:20

I'm fine with it if it's 'greens'. I don't smoke it's, but have no issue with anyone who does.

I am 100% against skunk weed though. It leads to paranoia and aggression, and just sounding slow. It also stinks so skunk is a very appropriate name for itPeople who smoke it will always tell you they're fine but they're really not. Theure a pain in the arse to be around

recrudescence · 04/03/2019 06:44

The people I know who have become dependent on cannabis have also become pathetic bores.

tattooq · 04/03/2019 06:52

It should be legalised and taxed to high heaven like cigarettes, have coffee shops where it can be smoked but banned in public places like in Amsterdam. I've always preferred having a joint or vape to drinking, and stoners are far preferable to drunks.

berrybubbles · 04/03/2019 06:56

I think all drugs should be dicrimilised so that users get help instead of being thrown in prison. I think that they should make the legal THC limit higher and see how it goes. Like really weak cannabis so the effects are more easily controlled. Alcohol is definitely more damaging. I was watching a documentary and found out Xanax is a Class C in this country! It takes lives and it’s a Class C when cannabis is a Class B. The mind boggles

CherryPavlova · 04/03/2019 06:59

It destroys lives. It leads to significant mental health problems. I believe we should encourage a cultural shift to actively discourage it and strengthen the notion of it being illegal.

Shookethtothecore · 04/03/2019 07:01

I smoked heavily for years, as did my ex husband. Honestly I would of argued that it was better than alcohol no real effect ect but it absolutely had. Detrimental effect on our mental health, which we couldn’t see at the time. I think it’s more powerful and harmful than people realise but that’s probably because it’s unregulated and has all sorts of stuff in it, it’s much stronger than it used to be

sailorsdelight · 04/03/2019 07:04

Depends - adults smoking it occasionally for recreation? Fine, same as alcohol.
Adults reekingnof weed, smoking in middle of the day in public? Not fine, same as if they were drinking a can of lager and drinking of booze walking down the street.
The high school kids round here 15/16 smoke it in the park before school at 8am, I think that’s harmful and would HATE our D.C. to be doing that.
Have also walked to the train for work 7 am and come across men, on several occasions, having a spliff on the way to work and though ‘loser’...

gamerwidow · 04/03/2019 07:09

I don’t smoke weed but I would decrimimalise and licence it.
Most of the problems with drugs come from gang violence around the supply chain and a lack of consistency and control in the product causing deaths when it’s cut with unexpected substances. People are going to take drugs most will do so safely(just like with alcohol) let’s look at the safest way to facilitate this instead of wasting money on an unwinnable war.
Any substance is open to abuse and excessive drug use is a problem but it should be treated the same way as alcoholism rather than criminalised.

Auntiepatricia · 04/03/2019 07:11

I think like many drugs, including alcohol, it’s dangerous. I like to see it used medically but not recreationally. It eats away at some people brains and changes them. I think people don’t realise what it’s doing to them.

OddBoots · 04/03/2019 07:14

No problem with people consuming it in cookies etc but I think it is selfish to smoke it for the same reason any smoking is selfish. I think the laws on driving in the hours after taking it need to be really strict but they may already be, I haven't looked recently.

Morgan12 · 04/03/2019 07:14

I'm in two minds.

I know someone with MS who smokes it and it helps them so much.

But I also know someone who has smoked it every day for around 14 years and they have turned into one of the nastiest people I know. They have zero concept of reality and lots of mental health problems. They stopped drinking to help all this and just refuse to see that it's the weed that's causing it.

If my children started smoking it I would not be happy and will actively discourage them by using the example above as they also know this person.

Prinstress · 04/03/2019 07:16

I smoke it everyday, it really helps my mental health and my Drs agree.

The sooner it’s decriminalised the better.
