You can get married at 16 (with parents consent) and have sex at 16 but to drink alcohol you need to be 18.Wouldn't it make more sense to have them all the same? It would mean that people are a bit more emotionally mature before they (legally) have sex or get married.Anyone else agree?

People mature at different rates though. Someone could be ready for sex at 15, another may not feel ready until their 20s

StinkyCandle · 03/03/2019 16:44

I agree it makes no sense.

If you can't be trusted to buy alcohol at 16 (and I agree!)< you can even less be trusted with a baby! You should be responsible enough to have safe without getting pregnant unwillingly, but the facts prove that many people are not so clued up - and so many are just lucky.

anniehm · 03/03/2019 16:47

Marriage at 18 min makes sense but we can't stop under 16's from having sex! I would support a "max 3 years age difference" until 18 so there's a way to prosecute older adults preying on teens but doesn't criminalise 16 year olds with 15 year old partners with a fixed lower age of 14, below which prosecution is automatic

prettybird · 03/03/2019 16:50

You don't need parental consent in Scotland to get married - even if you are only 16.

StinkyCandle · 03/03/2019 16:51

you can't stop 16 year old drinking alcohol either, but you can at least not making it so acceptable.

You can drink before you’re 18. You can drink in a private home from aged 5.

PupsAndKittens · 03/03/2019 18:02

The problem is legally 16 year old actually have more rights then people think, but because you’re not Legally an adult til 18 a lot of people Fell that it should be that age you get those rights.

Here is my opinion of what should be 16 and what should be 18.

Sex
Current age:
16 (18 if one of the persons has a job that puts them in a position of trust)

I personally would put these restrictions on:
A person aged 13, 14 or 15 may legally have sex with someone aged 13, 14, 15, 16 or 17
A person aged 16 may legally have sex with someone aged 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 or 20
A person aged 18, 19 or 20 may legally have sex with anyone over the age of 16
A person over the age of 21 may legally have sex with anyone over the age of 17

Smoking
Current age: to buy
18 (16 to consume)

I personally believe that the age to both consume and purchase cigarettes should be at 18. The reason I believe this is because colleges that accommodate post 16 only are allowed to have a smokers area. This obviously encourages students to try out smoking, therefore if the consuming age is raised colleges will not be allowed to have one and therefore less young people will try it. ( this is the reason why I started smoking at 17)

Marriage
Current age:
18 (16 with parental consent and in Scotland alone)

The age for marage should definitely be at least 18, but I personally think it should even be 21. I personally believe that relationships before this stage very rarely last and every couple that I have known to get in Engaged at 16 have usually had quite severe mental health problems (not being rude, I’m sure there are 16 or couples that haven’t had problems, just ones I have n engaged at 16 have usually had quite severe mental health/ life problems (not being rude, I’m sure there are 16-year-old couples that don’t problems, just ones I have known)

Alcohol
Current age:
18 to buy and to consume in public
16 to drink in a restaurant ( although very few allow this)
5 to drink on private property

I personally feel that the age to buy alcohol should remain at 18, however I do believe that 16 and 17-year-olds should be allowed to drink in restaurants and and to be able to enter bars (but not drink) after 9 o’clock, both of which, under the current laws they are legally allowed to do, however most bars/restaurants won’t allow as they deem it unethical to encourage underage drinking ( I personally think it encourages safe drinking)
I definitely think that 5 is way too young to give any sort of alcohol too, therefore I think the age to drink alcohol privately should be raised to 13.

Tattoos
Current age: 18 ( although illegal, A lot of places will allow 16 with parental consent)

I personally believe that the age to get a tattoo should be lowered to 16 ( without parental consent) I believe that a 16 year old definitely has capability of knowing if I want a tattoo or not. It is therefore life in most cases, therefore I feel that having it two years earlier isn’t going to make a difference.

Work
Current age:
13 ( part time with a license)
End of year 11 (most jobs, all without a license)

I personally believe that the age to get a job shoud be once you have completed your GCSEs , full stop.
I believe that anyone under the age has no need really to have a job as they will definitely still be at school and should be focusing on this study is not makeing money.

Age to work in the entertainment industry ( film, theatre TV, modelling) Unchaperoned

Current age:
End of year 11 ( however, A majority of the major production companies will not allow this until The person is over 18 )

I believe that if a 16-year-old is allowed to go to the toilet on their own whilst working in McDonald’s, they should be allowed to go to the toilet on their own when on a film set. I believe if a 17 -year-old is legally allowed to drive to college, they should be able to drive the way home and not Have to be frogmarched to the car by their parent

Piercings
Current age: none, (unless you live in Scotland where the age is 16 without consent ,18 if the piercing is in a sexualised area)

I personally believe the age to get ears piced with consent, should be eight years old. I believe that all piercings not in a sexualised area should be allowed without consent at age 16. This is the age most salons set, however I do know some salons that are slightly lower at 14 and some that are slightly higher at 18 ( I personally think 18 is a bit too high)

Energy drinks
Current age: none ( most big supermarkets have now put a age restriction of 16)

I personally believe the age to buy energy drinks should remain at 16. The reason I Believe this is because it will put a even bigger emphasis for 12 to 17-year-olds do you want to buy them. I also don’t believe that energy drinks should be in the same category as alcohol. However I do understand that a lot of people want this raised to 18 and I can see why.

Voteing
Current age:
18

I believe that The voting age should be lowered to 16. 16 and 17-year-olds have proven that they are mature enough to understand what is going on. For those that age that don’t feel ready, can simply not vote, but the right should be there for those that want to.

These are just my current opinions. I personally do you believe that 16 and 17-year-olds should be treated more maturely then how they are at the moment. Back in the 60s 70s and 80s that age group had a lot more these are just my current opinions. I personally do believe that 16 and 17-year-olds should be treated more maturely then how they are at the moment. Back in the 60s 70s and 80s that age group had a lot more rights and treated far more maturely then they are now

And sorry for the typos

Under 18s will have sex no matter what because you don't have to show ID to have sex. It's good that they prohibit alcohol as it's evil shit and children don't need it.

A lot of things aren't given to you at the same age, eg, certain benefits aren't available to under 25s and U25s have a lower minimum wage.
