'Morning sickness' my arse!

Secretlifeofme · 03/03/2019 15:10

I am 6w 3 days pregnant and already completely fed up with feeling sick all the time. ALL THE TIME. It's 11pm here and I can't sleep because of the nausea, after a day in which I spent a total of maybe 2 hours NOT feeling sick.

AIBU to think that calling it 'Morning sickness' is a complete con?

I used Sea Bands for my sickness, only took them off to dive in the shower, fastest showers ever, then bands back on. I'd be craving something to eat & then an hour later be sat on the toilet with my head in a bucket, I got chronic diarrhoea as well, both ends at the same time. I was in a public facing job at the time & had to have special permission to have a drink & biscuits with me at all times. Work were total arseholes, took 3 management meetings going up to district inspector before I was allowed my drink & biscuits.

AcrossthePond55 · 03/03/2019 16:25

I agree! They need to start calling it 'pregnancy sickness' or something. My nausea with DS1 was in the morning, but it was worse in the afternoon with DS2.

MadameDD · 03/03/2019 16:29

Agreed - first pregnancy approx. 5 years ago (DD is now 4.5) I was sick at first in the mornings only then after 3 months (first trimester) it was after work too - e.g. approx. 6pm.

Second pregnancy approx. 8 weeks along now, I'm currently sick in mornings only luckily but am waiting for it to kick in in the evenings. Nothing works for me not to feel sick, tried lemon and ginger tea, ginger biscuits, eating small light meals, crackers etc and still feel sick. I'm also ravenous for food I don't usually eat like toast with strawberry jam and am right off my favourite treat lunch of scotch eggs with 'luxurious' M&S or waitrose baby potato salad with cream etc... cries

I’m not sure why they refer to it as morning sickness either since I’ve never met one person who has had the classic movie vomit upon waking up then seemingly feel fine for the rest of the day Hmm.

I only had it with three of my pregnancies but one did sadly end in miscarriage so it isn’t always a good sign (just to PP that said it points towards a viable pregnancy- not always). I didn’t have anything with my two DD’s either and can confirm those were definitely viable pregnancies Grin.

It was all day nausea for me too and vomiting as well with DC1. Felt like I had a hangover and sickness bug all day every day for three months solid. Pregnancy is so much fun Grin.

bakingdiva · 03/03/2019 16:33

I am 10 weeks +3 and have been feeling constantly nauseous since the BFP. Bizarrely I don’t feel quite as bad in the morning some days, but by 4pm I feel awful. I’m trying to eat as well as I can in the morning and lunchtime, cos by the evening, I can only cope with beige.....pasta and cheese, ready salted crisps or toast. I’ve put on a stone just from the lack of vegetables!

I know it is a sign of a healthy pregnancy (we’ve already had 2 scans and seen a wriggly little bean) and I probably wouldn’t feel quite so cross about it if it weren’t for also having pregnancy insomnia too.....I haven’t had a good nights sleep for the last month....I thought that wouldn’t start until much later!

Margot33 · 03/03/2019 16:34

I know it really sucks doesn't it?! I had constant sickness all day & night for twelve whole weeks! I survived by swigging on lucazade!

Lalliella · 03/03/2019 16:35

“Morning” sickness stopping at 3 months my (large) arse! Stopping at birth more like! Good luck OP

haverhill · 03/03/2019 16:36

Yup, I felt sick for 12 weeks straight. Just keep crossing off the days on the calendar! Ginger and mint helped somewhat.

M0reGinPlease · 03/03/2019 16:39

It's shit and you're in the hardest bit right now. I remember someone saying to me 'you'll find something that works for you' and I realised that never having an empty stomach helped keep the nausea at bay at least a little bit. It gets easier- if only because as you get progressively more pregnant and more people know / you start to show etc you get more sympathy! Congratulations thoughThanks

Oliversmumsarmy · 03/03/2019 16:43

Got pregnant with dd in the beginning of March. By the end of July I had lost 2 stone.
Was throwing up from I reckon day 3.

I had 2 weeks when I felt absolutely marvellous then the heartburn kicked in.

Ended up drinking 12 litres of milk per day to make it stop. Nothing would relieve it. I used to go every where with a litre of milk.
Sipped from it all the time. Overall put on nearly 5 stone from my starting weight.

gallicgirl · 03/03/2019 16:44

Just a quick point but are you taking pregnancy vitamins after food? I took mine as soon as I got up and it made the sickness worse. It took me weeks to realise and take them later in the day.

Ribbonsonabox · 03/03/2019 16:46

Yep I used to end up hours late to work because I had to keep getting off my bus to throw up then getting on the next one! Worst part is you dont even look pregnant so people who've no experience of it think you are being a massive pansy. I was absolutely exhausted and an emotional mess all through the first trimester on top of that...
For me its hands down the worst part of being pregnant!

anitagreen · 03/03/2019 16:47

I sympathise op, I lost 4 stone in my last pregnancy I wasn't sick at all, I just couldn't eat much as was so nasueaus I lived on snickers bars and mash potato that's all I could manage , when I gave birth though I was happy I'd never been that small in my life, put it all back now though lol

MissB83 · 03/03/2019 16:48

Another vote for the sea bands; I wore them nearly non stop until 12 weeks and it really helped.

WeeBean · 03/03/2019 16:48

I feel your pain! I had Hyperemesis from 5 weeks until around 18 weeks, was signed off work for 10 weeks (started while I was on honeymoon). Now at 24 weeks I'm only being sick 2-3 times a day and it is actually just in the mornings now, which is a million times better and more manageable. Don't be afraid to go to your doctor and ask for anti-sickness tablets, I tried 3 different kinds. Do not feel at all guilty about what you can eat, if it's crackers and ice lollies so be it, I found jelly really good, plus it tastes the same coming up as it does going down so not too horrific.

Most importantly, look after your mental health, if you need time off work take it. I was an absolute wreck and verging on depression, some of the thoughts that went through my head were awful. I can't wait for this baby but I will 100% not be having any more.

I wish talking about pregnancy before the 12 week mark was less of a taboo. I had no idea what to expect and if my sickness was normal, never mind the usual anxiety of wondering if everything is ok. Pregnancy can be a very dark and lonely place!

DramaAlpaca · 03/03/2019 16:50

You have my sympathy. I felt 'seasick' & threw up regularly all day, every day until about 20 weeks in all three of my pregnancies. Miserable, it was. The only thing that made me feel a bit better was eating, despite feeling queasy, so I ended up the size of a house.

spiderlight · 03/03/2019 16:51

Mine was constant for about four months. I was losing half a stone a week, and I wasn't overweight to start with. In retrospect it was probably HG, but my GP was useless. Recommended ginger biscuits and sherbet lemons. Hmm I wish I'd made more of a fuss. At its worst, I couldn't walk through the kitchen and struggled to have my beloved dogs anywhere near me because even the faintest smell of anything at all would make me throw up.

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/03/2019 16:54

Keep a diary. It helps you to realise that although you're feeling dreadful today you were feeling even more dreadful a month ago.

Brussel sprouts and cheese salad rolls were all I could manage, and I had to do the journey to work one tube stop at a time. And no-one offers a seat because you're not visibly pregnant.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 03/03/2019 17:07

Yeah. It doesn’t always stop after 3 months either. Grin

Congratulations on your BFP though! I hope it does get better.

Rade · 03/03/2019 17:11

Would you like a ginger biscuit? Grin.

Mine was worse in the evening, but essentially I vomited every single day for 40 weeks. And again for DC2.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 03/03/2019 17:23

Try hot water. It might help settle your stomach done.

When I was pregnant, the first 12 weeks, the only thing that I could eat without my stomach lurching was salt and vinegar discos. Bacon absolutely made my stomach heave. I couldnt bear it the stuff.

M0reGinPlease · 03/03/2019 17:37

Yes @gallicgirl! Forgot about that one.

Stroan · 03/03/2019 17:41

You have my sympathies, I'm 14 weeks and still feeling awful. It's cha debilitating, miserable and lonely.

You can have hyperemesis without the vomit though, but it's hard to be taken seriously. This article prompted me to push for medication, I could have written it word for word. I am being sick now as well, but it's mostly been nausea.

www.motherandbaby.co.uk/pregnancy-and-birth/pregnancy/help-with-morning-sickness/hyperemesis-gravidarum-without-vomitting

Everyone is an expert in "morning sickness" too. It will definitely go away by 12 weeks, you should eat ginger and wear sickness bands.

Phineyj · 03/03/2019 17:47

I ate a lot of Love Hearts.

givemesteel · 03/03/2019 18:06

I'm there with you op, I'm 8 weeks and feel dreadful the whole time I'm awake and vom several times a day. I don't know how bad it has to be to be classed as Kate Middleton -esque hyperemesis as never been diagnosed.

For me what works -

A lot of dry rice krispies
Dry crackers
Slim fast vanilla (meal replacement not on diet)
Boiled rice
Berries are OK, strawberries, blueberries
Smell of Vicks or tiger balm
Xxxx strong mints

... That's it. It's shit and how are you meant to hide your pregnancy from people if the above is all you can eat.

I'm off to buy sea sickness bands. Any other tips like that are welcome!
