Another one who ate sponge when pregnant. Also crumbling plaster and dry, dusty gravel. And ice! I was really anaemic!

I used to love to eat scabs as a kid 🤢 and play doh! I still get the urge to chomp on ds’ (play doh, not scabs!)

Springiscomingsoon · 03/03/2019 22:30

Isn't eating sponge bad for you?

HowDoYouMilkANut · 03/03/2019 22:37

I consider myself to have a pretty strong stomach but some of these are making me queasy!

DustyMaiden · 03/03/2019 22:42

I only eat food. I’m not crazy, well not that crazy.

Matilda15 · 03/03/2019 22:57

Pregnant sponge eater here.

Well didn’t really eat just kind of sucked the water out and chewed it. I had sponges in the fridge on rotation in bowls of water to chew and suck water from,

It took me a long time to stop after my DS was born and still massively crave it now tbh 😳

cattaxi · 03/03/2019 23:06

I started off just chewing it and spitting out like you do with gum. But that didn’t satisfy me, so I took to swallowing small chunks.

peachgreen · 03/03/2019 23:10

Hoo boy, there are a LOT of untreated iron deficiencies on this thread... Seriously, if you're eating chalk, plaster, sponges, plastic etc, get yourself checked out. Thanks

My cousin ended up in hospital with arsenic poisoning after eating too many apple cores and pips - she was eating dozens a day mind you (eating disorder).

I don't think I eat anything weird but I love chewing plastic, especially the soft rubbery kind.

Mumphineasandferbmadea · 03/03/2019 23:12

When I was a kid I used to eat lip balm and pva glue. I did try play doh once but didn't like it. I was an odd kid who also put loads of salt in milk before I drank it. The thought of that turns my stomach now.

Octofraughts · 03/03/2019 23:13

And I thought I was... eccentric.

Sorry to be graphic here but... have you actually passed these items through your bowels or does it stay inside forever - sponge waters particularly...??
Surely doing this is dangerous?!

AornisHades · 03/03/2019 23:25

Dd used to make playdoh models, let them dry and then nibble them.

Bellasorellaa · 04/03/2019 00:39

Ice

Mumbunsandhuns · 04/03/2019 01:14

Blue tac Blush

Ireallywantmylifeback · 04/03/2019 01:26

When I was pg I used to 'eat' the bubbles made from the radox bubble bath while I was taking a dip.

GimmeBread · 04/03/2019 07:08

Years ago, dog biscuits. Shapes in particular, not Bonio. Too meaty.

Mumof1DS · 04/03/2019 07:22

A most enlightening thread. I thought pica was pretty rare!

LikeACowsOpinion · 04/03/2019 11:54

Another sponge eater.

Soaked in warm water and Radox stress relief bubble bath.
I also ate the bubbles in the bath and sipped on (Clean!!) Radox water.
Absolutely had to be stress relief bubbles though.
I still do it now and my DD is 3.

Crunching ice too. I do it all day every day.

PivotPivotPivottt · 04/03/2019 13:24

LikeACow nice to meet another Radox/sponge fanGrin

My bubbles were the Radox stress relief ones too (the green one?) along with a Radox eucalyptus shower gel soaked sponge. I didn't actually eat the sponge would just chew on it but it did mean they had to be replaced often!

During my first pregnancy I was on the bus coming home from work one day and had this sudden craving for bubbles so I went home, filled the sink with bubble bath and ate them. Then it just escalated and repeated it during my next pregnancy 6 years later Shock

I was still living at home for the begining of my first pregnancy and my mum used to be driven mad with the state of my spongesBlush. I also had the urge to clean all the time because I craved the smell of the cleaning products, she banned me from using her magic eraser as she didn't trust me not to chew on itBlush.

LikeACowsOpinion · 04/03/2019 22:24

@PivotPivotPivottt exactly that one. The smell is better than any food, ever!

I was the same, would chew them like gum. Suck the bubbly water out and chew, I went through bottles and bottles of Radox every week!

Cleaning for me too. The smell of washing up liquid, surface cleaner, washing powder and fabric softener still are were like my crack.

God I'm weird. I would sit there sniffing the softener and powder box Blush

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 04/03/2019 22:32

Reassuring to know I'm not the only paper eater, I wonder if that's linked to deficiency too.

I used to eat the corners of book pages, newspapers etc but never any bits with words on, nowadays I eat the lollipop sticks when the kids have finished with them, not the wooden ones the ones made of tightly rolled up paper.

OnlineAlienator · 04/03/2019 22:36

Not sure how you guys arent dead, living off Radox Hmm

I used to lick the side of matchboxes as a kid. I also used to suck a particular metal gate - maybe iron deficient? I did go on the develop anaemia as a teen...

frenchonion · 04/03/2019 22:41

I do sample playdoh when the kids get it out. Doesn't taste like it used to though!

BringItOn88 · 04/03/2019 22:42

Toilet paper (unused!), newspaper and sponges.

ilovemilton · 05/03/2019 11:32

I just googled sponge pica and it came up as "very strange"

Tryingtoholdittogether · 05/03/2019 11:48

Leather. Pregnant with dc4 and all 4 kids I have craved leather. Haven't eaten it but would have to buy a new product made of leather for the smell. Tried all the leather scented items but doesn't cut it. The only thing that helps is eating really rough beef with salt or biltong but only one brand that my butcher sells and regularly sells out! It frustrates me to no end. My teeth ache I crave it so much. Haven't actually digested any leather though. I do day dream about a leather bag my mum 9mce owned and I used to hide under the table and chew it and it had a wonderful taste. Never found that again! And I had my iron levels checked I'm not anaemic apparently

Tryingtoholdittogether · 05/03/2019 11:51

I seem to Google full grain leather sofas every day... it's driving me crazy. Just 8 weeks to go!
