I have another thread running as I’m potentially looking at retraining. The only problem is I’m unsure what I’d like to retrain for.

Would you mind sharing what you do for work and if you enjoy it?

I know the fact that you enjoy it doesn’t necessarily mean I would but I’m looking for inspiration and ideas (there are many reasons why I feel the need to retrain it’s not just a frivolous whim Grin)

Occupational Therapist.
Yes, it’s a brilliant profession with lots of options once you have qualified.

madeyemoodysmum · 03/03/2019 12:28

I work in one of the uk tip tourist attractions. I love it but I’m very part time so I’m not sure I’d love it full time.

Plus are
The people are lovely
The visitors are generally happy to be there to its a nice atmosphere
It’s something I am interested in
My company give good perks

Downsides
Hours are a bit crap Weekends and evenings on a rota
Money is rubbish but better than some.

InsomniaTho · 03/03/2019 12:29

I’m in my 30s and in Year 1 of a Biology degree after working in retail for 14+ years. Planning to do a Masters and PhD and hopefully be a Professor. I bloody love it. Hated retail.

BeanTownNancy · 03/03/2019 12:31

I work in Finance/IT. Pay is OK, company has good benefits and is very local to me so minimal commuting costs.

Ideally I'd like to retrain and work in medicine, but that's not something I would consider until my kids are both at school as I couldn't afford the financial hit with childcare.

Iamclearlyamug · 03/03/2019 12:32

I'm self employed working with horses - riding, teaching and general care

I absolutely love my job and can't imagine doing anything else.

As with any self employment the pros are choosing my own hours, taking holiday whenever I want (and I take a lot, around 8 weeks a year) no childcare for DD as I take her with me. cons are fluctuating income (though this is rare as my clients are almost all permanent) no sick/holiday/maternity pay, and my dad asking 3 times a week when I'm going to get a 'proper job' 🙄🙄

Megan2018 · 03/03/2019 12:36

I work in Higher Education but in a non academic role. I am effectively an Operations Manager, making sure everything in the faculty works for staff and students.
Love it, work with a huge variety of people -academics and professional services and students. No day is the same.
Earn around £50k, excellent local government pension etc.
It is very busy and stressful though.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 03/03/2019 12:37

Business Development for a health charity.

Don't love it but don't hate it Grin. OK pay but amazing flexibility. Some UK travel.

All in all, I wouldn't leave.

charlotte2029 · 03/03/2019 12:37

I am a carer for people with dementia and other life limiting conditions and I absolutely love it!! Its hard work and the moneys not great but to know I'm making a difference to someone's life makes it all worth it!

BrizzleMint · 03/03/2019 12:52

Teacher and I love it.
The lack of work life balance isn't good but the tin hat is.

isseywithcats · 03/03/2019 12:57

Commercial kitchen cleaner 4 mornings a week cant say i love it but the sense of satisfaction when its done and gleaming is why i do the job
3 days a week run the ebay account for a cat charity and like this job more, love receiving the items for sale from the ohter shops, like the bits that go into the job and love the fact im raising money for an animal charity

CostanzaG · 03/03/2019 13:00

University academic and I love it. It's high pressured but I get so much freedom and autonomy which means I get a relatively good work-life balance.
Used to be a careers adviser and absolutely loved that too.

Huntawaymama · 03/03/2019 13:01

Shepherd. I love it, love the outdoors, the sheep, the dogs. Bloody hard work surrounded by ignorance these days but I don't want to do anything else

Sexnotgender · 03/03/2019 13:02

I work in finance as a consultant.

I love it.

Layoverlife · 03/03/2019 13:03

I work for the Ambulance Service I am front line staff, the shifts are long and at times crazy, but no 2 days are ever the same. There are some very unpleasant people we meet who phisically or verbally attack us or just don't appreciate our help, but on the other side we meet some lovely people and are able to help people at their worse, I'm a stranger to them but people put their trust in me and I get a chance to make a difference I can't imagine anything more rewarding... I wouldn't change my job for the world even though I've just woken up after 4 night shifts and look like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards Grin

AlpacaLypse · 03/03/2019 13:03

Self employed working with dogs. Upsides and downsides very similar to Iamclearlyamug upthread, except that I don't get family members asking when I'm going to get a proper job. Mainly because three of them have started doing it part time with me Smile

WorraLiberty · 03/03/2019 13:10

I work at a tourist attraction that also runs educational programmes.

I absolutely love it because...

The public are happy to be there

Everyone I work with is lovely

We get to dress up in period costumes when he hold events Grin

The building and grounds are picturesque all year round

We have a nature reserve

I can more or less choose my own hours, even though I'm under permanent contract.

The pay and perks are brilliant.

Every night I go to bed, looking forward to work the next day.

Whatsername7 · 03/03/2019 13:13

Im a secondary teacher and head of year. I love it. The work life balance is variable - there are days when I feel like I leave school, pick up the kids, feed and bath them and work from their bedtime until 10.30pm. There are also days when I walk out at 4pm and do nothing until I go back in the next day. The holidays are a massive perk, particularly as I have kids. I love working with young people - they are the best part of the job. The downsides are the negative press that teachers and schools get. And the fact that teachers and schools are continually bashed by the government. However, I find it equally annoying when some teachers claim it is the hardest job in the world because they work 18 hour days, all weekend and all but one day of the holidays. Like all companies, there are some truly horrendous schools with poor management and the expectations on teachers are unrealistic. However, for most of us, we work hard, we are paid well and you learn to work smart and maximise your use of time.

nombrecambio · 03/03/2019 13:14

SLT working with complex needs. Love it.

Have worked in community and in adult services which I didn't enjoy. Too much paperwork and not enough therapy.

Pay is wank, but quality of life very good.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 03/03/2019 13:26

I’m a manager at McDonalds and I absolutely love it. Every day is different and it’s such a great company to work for.

littlemissalwaystired · 03/03/2019 13:31

I'm a midwife. Some days I absolutely adore it and it's the best job in the world, others I wonder why on earth I got myself into something so stressful for such little money.

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 03/03/2019 13:33

I work in a big UK tourist attraction that's very much based outdoors as a visitor programme manager.
I love I, plenty of outdoor time, some office time, great people, lovely visitors and the site is absolutely beautiful.
The downsides are the long days in peak season, working every weekend for most of the roles there and the odd unpleasant visitor.
I've done it for 12 years though and wouldn't do anything else.

PooleySpooley · 03/03/2019 13:35

I am a Senior Family Worker (which means I casehold and line manage family workers).

Absolutely love my job ❤️

insancerre · 03/03/2019 13:37

I’m a nursery manager and I love it
But, I have changed my role so that I am more hands on with the children
I couldn’t handle the move from being with the children to being stuck in an office
So now I do mostly with the children with some office based
