I have another thread running as I’m potentially looking at retraining. The only problem is I’m unsure what I’d like to retrain for.

Would you mind sharing what you do for work and if you enjoy it?

I know the fact that you enjoy it doesn’t necessarily mean I would but I’m looking for inspiration and ideas (there are many reasons why I feel the need to retrain it’s not just a frivolous whim Grin)

I'm a Marketing Manager and have worked in several sectors including finance, tourism, hospitality and retail. My favourites are retail and tourism and I'd totally recommend it, I have a good work life balance and the salary and benefits are good.

I'm predominantly B2C and have always been client side as agency work never appealed to me. I love the variety and the opportunity to be strategic and creative. I've worked for some globally recognised brands which involved lots of tv filming activity and tv advertising which was really great fun. I've also worked for smaller independent businesses and am currently at a family owned independent retail chain; I'm looking forward to working directly with the owner and less office politics to negotiate!

My degree is in a completely unrelated science subject as I didn't really know what marketing was when I was at school! I have since completed a CIM diploma several years ago which my employer paid for so I have the qualification to back up my experience.

riotlady · 03/03/2019 13:49

I’m studying to be an occupational therapist and I love it!

JohnnyKarate · 03/03/2019 13:52

I’m a buyer in the food and drink industry. I really enjoy it most the time. I hate negotiating though so surprised I’ve made it so far, but must be doing something right!

stevie69 · 03/03/2019 13:55

I'm a chartered accountant in a large not-for-profit organisation.

I absolutely love it Smile

catx1606 · 03/03/2019 13:59

I'm an assembly worker in engineering. I love it, the pays not great considering were skilled workers (not many people can work with a microscope and tweezers all day as they just don't have the co-ordination but after doing shop work and admin for years,I it's lovely to find a job that I enjoy!

ValleyoftheHorses · 03/03/2019 13:59

Dentist. I enjoy it but find it stressful. I’ve had a lot of anxiety recently which is work related. The actual job hasn’t changed and is mostly great but the threat of litigation has massively increased and I worry more as I get older.
I’ve just started a University role a day a week so will see how that goes.

I do matched betting. Not a proper job as such but it pays for the nice things we have, such as holidays, days out, paid for our wedding last year, pays the livery on the ponies. I am also moving slowly into sports trading, which is similar to trading on the stock market, but buying and selling bets rather than shares. It's early days but will probably replace matched betting as my main income.

I love what I do. I work from my kitchen table, fit it housework and schools runs and school holidays and can do as much or as little as I like. It's the Cheltenham festival in 10 days. I am aiming to make enough to buy a new TV and a new sideboard from it. And possibly have a bit left over.

I don't really tell many people in real life what I do as they either think I have a gambling problem (I don't) or ask for tips.

Princessmushroom · 03/03/2019 14:06

Frouby I’m really looking forward to Cheltenham! Can I ask how much you’re making a month now? My earnings have slowed down a lot from mbing

moanymoaner · 03/03/2019 14:15

I'm a tutor in a prison - I LOVE it but I hate the politics of it all . Drives me mad .

Aberforthsgoat · 03/03/2019 14:16

This is all really really interesting thanks so much for sharing.
Going to read through all the replies properly now

If you’re not squeamish and relatively good at maths would you consider becoming an ODP? There’s a national shortage at the moment and I know they’ve increased the places on the course by 1000 in the past year. Good money, can be flexible, and tons of overtime if you want it. Hard work but very rewarding.

Aberforthsgoat · 03/03/2019 14:22

@halfbloodprincess I have to admit I don’t know what an ODP is! I’m not strong maths is my strong suit either, I’m much more of a creative type! Thanks for the suggestion though :)

I'm a solicitor doing a specialist role at a Licensed Conveyancers. It's intellectually satisfying but a bit one dimensional.

That being said, I don't miss standard private practice at all.

HalfBloodPrincess · 03/03/2019 14:25

Oops. I did put a link up but must have not posted properly.
It’s an operating department practitioner. Not very creative though, the days are never the same but the aspects of the job are quite monotonous.

mrsk28 · 03/03/2019 14:27

Dental nurse. Love certain aspects and really hate others. Would like to retrain in something else medical/dental but need to find something that I wouldn't need to study full time. Maybe an Open University degree or similar.

S0uthernBelle · 03/03/2019 14:37

I work full time in a chocolate factory, packing the chocolate....I love it.

GerryJam · 03/03/2019 14:48

I work in a hospice and love it.

Frouby · 03/03/2019 14:49

Princess I aim for £300 a week. But that's on 2 accounts. Do the bet clubs, every offer you can, and look for guaranteed profit before stuff like 2ups, which tie up your exchanges and seem like a lot of QL for not much return.

I also do a bit of trading but not much but am getting better at it.

Am really excited for Cheltenham. Am hoping for a months wages in 4 days.

Aberforthsgoat · 03/03/2019 15:19

Thanks @halfbloodprincess

Matched betting sounds interesting but I would be too worried about making a mistake and losing a load of money @frouby

Homelessness prevention. I love it but unfortunately funding is being cut

Spotsbeforemyeyes · 03/03/2019 15:25

I'm a cake maker. I love it but the money is rubbish.

Dimsumlosesum · 03/03/2019 15:27

I'm so envious so many of you all have jobs you love, it's great though that you do. I had to give up what would've been my dream life before it had even started so I've never known a job I've loved.

Crinklesmile · 03/03/2019 15:30

Im a retail supervisor- the hours are flexible, the stress is high but it's so busy, the shifts fly in and my staff are amazing. It's not great pay but works well for me!

Ca55andraMortmain · 03/03/2019 15:38

I'm a primary teacher. I love aspects of it - I love the planning (not the endless paperwork of it but actually planning what we're going to learn, how we'll learn it, thinking of exciting lessons etc - I'm in Scotland where we have schemes of work etc so a lot more flexibility in planning than teachers in other places). I love being with the kids and the pastoral care aspect of the job.

But funding is being cut all the time and it really affects the way the job works - often I feel that I'm not being the best teacher I could be because I have no TA, no art equipment, no learning support etc. It's hard to know there are kids who need help that I can't give them. So as time goes on I'm enjoying it less and less.

RoboticSealpup · 03/03/2019 15:40

Well, one aspect of my job is qualitative social research. I love that part of it.
