I have another thread running as I’m potentially looking at retraining. The only problem is I’m unsure what I’d like to retrain for.

Would you mind sharing what you do for work and if you enjoy it?

I know the fact that you enjoy it doesn’t necessarily mean I would but I’m looking for inspiration and ideas (there are many reasons why I feel the need to retrain it’s not just a frivolous whim Grin)

Chartered accountant. It's alright cld be worse. Good days and bad days. Very busy can be quite stressful. Least the pay is good.

I wish I had done something more rewarding, that feels like your making a difference. No one will die if I get a figure wrong!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/03/2019 15:56

I am a engineering physicist. I work on a shipyard. I make sure people don't die of radiation poisoning, amongst other things. I love it.

Penners99 · 03/03/2019 16:02

IT Architect, love the work.

Passthewinebottle · 03/03/2019 16:05

Shelbybear - are you in practice or industry?

I’m a trainee accountant, began retraining 3 years ago. I work in a practice & I absolutely adore it! I’m never bored, & it helps that my boss is young, successful & absolutely shit hot at her job! Our practice is so far from the stuffy beige boring accountancy image 🙌🏼

Emergency planner. Best decision I ever made. Love it! Everyday is different and so far we've had 4 large scale fires and some other high profile incidents (saying what would be very outing and give it away) since the beginning of this year.

Shelbybear · 03/03/2019 16:31

Passthewinebottle I work in industry. Think I would enjoy practice more.

Dare I say it, I really like tax 😮 I'm not willing to do any additional exams though to specialise in this area.

I've got a young family so work part time and enjoy my work life balance.

I bought a children's activity franchise just over a year ago. Atm I do it 3dpw but have 1dpw and several evenings doing preparation, marketing and admin. Broke even several months ago and aiming for turnover of 20k plus this year.
In theory it fits in beautifully with the kids - hours roughly 9.30-4.15 ish term time only and is very rewarding but I can never leave it behind and am constantly stressed!

ScandiLady · 03/03/2019 16:45

I work for the Danish tax authorities where Im a personal taxation adviser specialised in foreign taxation and do translation as well...
I absolutely love it...

I’m a medical secretary. I like the actual job itself but am not happy in the Trust I work for. We have been downgraded and it feels like a kick in the teeth and totally demoralising for the responsibility that we have.

MissB83 · 03/03/2019 16:54

Government lawyer and yes I really enjoy it. Family friendly and flexible, stimulating and usually pretty worthwhile.

SagelyNodding · 03/03/2019 16:55

Retraining as a secondary English teacher in France. I have loved and hated this year in equal measure, but I do really love the teaching part, even the admin! It's the university masters course which has been a bit of a disappointment... 3 months to go and the worst will be over!
I'm really glad I retrained though, and I feel positive and enthusiastic about the future for the first time in years!

Nodancingshoes · 03/03/2019 16:59

I'm a nursery manager. I generally like it. I don't like the low wages, dealing with staff problems for most of my day and the way we are spoken to sometimes by the parents...

Violetroselily · 03/03/2019 17:00

I work in quite a technical risk management/compliance role for one of the big banks.

I don't love it, but acknowledge there are many worse things I could be doing

Crazyladee · 03/03/2019 17:03

I foster care for adults with learning disabilities. Currently have a lady with autism and a learning disability living with us.

Tinysarah1985 · 03/03/2019 17:11

I’m a medical secretary at a GP surgery. It’s not the most challenging job i’ve had- all i do is send of referrals and book outpatient appointments. 4 hours a day, fits in with school run etc.
Would love to go to med sec at local
Hospital, paramedic (a no go at the moment as child is only 4 and wouldn’t feel right palming her off on nan and grandad all the time i’m at work), or HCA.

Bohbell · 03/03/2019 17:11

Marketing consultant and copwriter, B2B, self employed, qualified to masters level in marketing and digital marketing, been in marketing 23 years and freelance for 14. I love the job, have worked really hard and definately put more into it than i have got out of it but whether its enjoyable depends on the clients. I also think because i work a lot with male entrepreneurs i may have reached a glass ceiling.

Upside is flexibility, no day is the same, i learn a lot working and writing in different sectors, and i get a lot of job satisfaction when things go well. I’ve also got quite efficient, which has increases my output and is better for revenue. Downside is working with clients who don’t want to listen - or pay me the going rate! Working alone can also make me slightly paranoid as have noone to run things by.

mumonthehill · 03/03/2019 17:18

Work as a coordinator for 2 community projects, employed by a large uk charity. 4 days a week, rubbish pay but work in a great team. Love it!

Xenia · 03/03/2019 17:47

Solicitor. Business law. Have my own firm. Yes enjoy it very much. Well paid. Best of all worlds. I am very lucky.

It's not that easy to get into - usually 3 year law degree from one of the better universities, high A level grades, good degree, post grad, then finding a firm to train you for 2 years so that is 6 years after A levels to get qualfied and then you start getting experience so it's not instant but well worth it.

ThePortlyPinUp · 03/03/2019 17:58

Ward nurse in a day surgery unit. I absolutely love it, all the best bits of nursing and nicer hours.

RocketPockets · 03/03/2019 17:59

I'm an ODP. I absolutely love it, I scrub & work on anaesthetics across upper GI, colorectal, urology, Gynae, vascular & breast surgery doing elective & emergency cases. It does have its bloody horrendous days but ultimately I'm very happy in my job Smile

RocketPockets · 03/03/2019 18:00

Due to the emergency part of the job the hours are varied but many of my colleagues have set days & some only works weekdays so no bank holidays, weekends or nights.

WhiteHandle · 03/03/2019 18:02

Lecturer

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 03/03/2019 18:03

I’m a community HCSW working with district nurses, I love it! No 2 days are the same, I cover a large rural area taking bloods, dressings, support visits, palliative care etc. Hoping to train through the open uni for my nursing degree later in the year

MidwifeyForLifey · 03/03/2019 18:05
