AIBU to not want an oven that is smarter than me?

Just had a first draft of possible new fancy kitchen.
Can anyone explain to me why the fuck one needs a WIFI enabled oven and hob?
It's just one more feature that I will never ever get to grips with.
The manufacturer's YouTube video shows happy smiley people turning on their dishwasher while sitting on a beach!
Turn it on before you leave the house or wait until you get home!

Has anyone got a Smart appliance that is actually worth the inflated price?

We have a smart thermostat and lights which is good for when you are away in terms of security. Could also be achieved with a timer plug though.

Singlenotsingle · 02/03/2019 20:17

Like my washing machine with 13 stupid settings. I use 3, max!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 02/03/2019 20:25

I understand the smart thermostat and lights. I can see the use in that.

But apparently what is wonderful about this oven is that you can download a recipe for, dunno, Victoria sponge and then use your phone to turn the oven on to the right temp for said sponge.
I can turn it on to 160' the old fashioned way in a fraction of the time!

I'm 28 and feel technology has already overwhelmed me and gone ahead

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 02/03/2019 20:29

@Littleraindrop15 I'm old enough to be your mother, how do think I can cope!

DecumusScotti · 02/03/2019 20:29

I know I’ve had a couple of anxiety related panics about leaving the oven/hob on, (although of course I never have), so being able to check to ease my mind when I’m out could come in handy, I guess. But other than that I don’t see much point. Smart appliances will just mean we’ll be even more fucked if the machines finally rise up to take over the world. Although granted that could just be my anxiety talking and probably won’t ever happen.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 02/03/2019 20:32

Yanbu. I don't even want appliances that beep at me when they've finished their cycle. I am still smarter than most cookers/washing machines etc (for a few years yet Wink ).

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 02/03/2019 20:34

My current 20 year old oven probably has features that I don't know about and will never use, so the last thing I need is some smart-arse Siemens hob sniggering at me

OP posts:
WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 02/03/2019 20:39

@bibbitybobbityyhat My very elderly mother couldn't cope with all the beeping in my current kitchen , and it's not a Smart one.

"What's that?"
The microwave has finished
"What's that?"
The tumble drier is telling me that those sheets can come out
"What's that?"
Someone sent me a text
"What's that whistling?"
Your hearing aid is acting up

Smart oven? Is that when your DH roasts and bakes amazing meals in a Bond tuxedo?

Because i could happily do with one of them...

NotSureThisIsWhatIWant · 02/03/2019 20:39

After years of pondering on splashing out on a combi microwave oven, I have just sent it back... too complex to think about it and it doesn’t even have a Wi-fi!

Babdoc · 02/03/2019 20:41

It’s annoying that they fit all these unnecessary features to appliances just because they can, and they’re trying to offer something new to beat competitors.
It’s just more stuff that can go wrong and need expensive repairs or replacement.
I use one setting on my washing machine for everything. I don’t buy impractical fabrics that need specialist washing. Ditto the dishwasher - I have never used it to heat plates or cook salmon ffs!
My oven and microwave offer several languages, and require the instruction manual even to simply reset the clock and default to English every time we have a power cut.
Some manufacturer could make a killing by producing simple basic appliances that just do the job reliably. Lots of elderly people would be thrilled, especially those with early dementia!

Littleraindrop15 · 02/03/2019 20:47

Think manufacturers are pressured for innovation and somehow incorporating technology to every single product is their move. By trying to simplify they have overcomplicated..

We have so many remotes for our super smart TV that I just tell my husband to get me to the page I need to scroll through the programs I want to watch.

MadeForThis · 02/03/2019 20:48

It's quicker to turn the dial to 160 than download the recipes.

Pointless

This!

I need hobs with knobs that require exactly no brain cells to operate, and that I can see from the other end of the kitchen are set at Off.

Ditto washing machines and microwaves with dials and single-purpose, labelled buttons.

A temporary menu flashing up on a screen and disappearing unless I can work my way through some complicated series of context-specific button-pushes? While beeping?Shock Fuck right off. Not a chance I'm going to be able to operate that on a bad day.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 02/03/2019 20:58

The good thing I reckon I can save over a thousand quid by just getting the basic model from a good recognised brand

Appliances are designed by bros for bros, and have been infected by the Silicon Valley connectivity bollox. I don’t want an oven which will refuse to work because I’ve turned off the WiFi.

For peak futility, check out the June oven.

Nacreous · 02/03/2019 21:04

I like a washing machine where I can pick the temperature, wash type and spin separately, but doing that with dials is fine.

I like my WiFi enabled lights and would enjoy a WiFi thermostat. I think in theory I can set stuff to record on my TV from my phone, but haven't worked out how. I really haven't come up with any other smart appliances I'd like tbh...

Oysterbabe · 02/03/2019 21:08

I have WiFi heating, lights and some plus sockets but that's it. My friend has a WiFi shower. WTF?!
I have a new kitchen and everything beeps furiously at me all the time.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 02/03/2019 21:09

My current Neff microwave came with a recipe book, explaining all the marvellous things I could do with it.
Strangely, it did not make a big thing of "Baked potato, defrosting milk from freezer when we have run out, reheating leftovers, and warming up a forgotten mug of tea" which is 95% of what mine does

OP posts:
longtimelurkerhelen · 02/03/2019 21:18

Now if they fancy wifi oven actually made the cake and cooked it, then yabu, I would pay good money for a ready made not by me cake, but other than than no.

Also washing wifi machines, wtf is the point? You shouldn't be running it if you are not there, it's a fire hazard. Also 99.9% of the time I use 1 program.

Microwave, I would be happy with a simple time dial, the defrost always cooks one part of the food, so no point in that function.

With planned obsolescence, it does not pay to pay.

StealthPolarBear · 02/03/2019 21:23

I work in a technical job. Since we got the latest TV package thing I can no longer turn it on. Seriously. I haven't turned the TV on in about five years, no exaggeration.

soulrider · 02/03/2019 21:24

We got the cheapest neff oven in their range when we did our kitchen, it still has a yoghurt setting!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 02/03/2019 21:25

What's a yoghurt setting?

Bagadverts · 02/03/2019 21:35

I do not need WiFi appliances. I don’t want my cooker on if I’m not around. I’m happy to look in the fridge and check if I have tomatoes or cheese rather than WiFi my fridge. It’s just as likely I left the cheese on the counter as I ran out so it won’t work anyway. It’s anotger thing to go wrong or get hacked.

I’m already lazy enough - one less walk to the kitchen to turn on the oven/microwave is a few less steps.
