NC for this!!😩 Ok so we have an air to water heating and air exchange system (newly built house) and MIL is staying over! She is VERY old school, wakes up EVERY morning and opens the bedroom window. I’m actually ok with this for 10mins etc but she tries to leave it open ALL DAY!!! I am blue In the face trying to explain to her that it is making our system work harder and that it is not needed!!! Everytime I close the window I come back an hour later and the bloody window is open AGAIN!! She is baffled as to how we can prevent damp etc!! I am fed up explaining that the system does it all!! That our house is pretty much airtight and that’s WHY it works so well, that’s why we have no damp, that’s why our house is an ambient temperature (except for when she leaves the flipping window open) I then notice a drop in temp and the heating system is clocking in unnecessarily. aibu to tell her if she doesn’t stop she can go home and open her own windows!! 😭😭😫 rant over!!

@Esspee please see my previous post. That is not our monthly bill that was the most expensive bill we have had yet. It’s way way less in the spring summer, that is literally our only bill. We don’t buy any other fuel other than a bottle of gas for 40 for the year. Our summer bills were 30-40. Most expensive was 90.45 I haven’t worked out the average yet. It’s probably more than it needs to be because I have it set at 20 degrees if I set it lower I imagine it would be cheaper.

I can only imagine opening a window during winter or wet weather would cause mold. I don't know for sure, I could be wrong, but I imagine having open windows in such countries would cause mold and mildew.
Nope! It's usually people bricking up fireplaces, getting airtight double glazing and sealing up all draughts, then having baths/boiling kettles/drying washing inside with nowhere for all that moisture to escape to that causes mould. Houses need to breathe.

Opening a window to the rain does nothing but let that lovely petrichor scent in. Nothing beats an open window, however fancy the air recycling system is. Especially when it's a sweltering 21 degrees! Maybe MIL is just overheated?

@burritofan yes absolutely agree when ppl do such things to older houses that aren’t made to be airtight then It causes all sorts of problems but our house does breathe, and at that it breathes at a more even pace than an average house! The system removes condensation and smells etc and replaces with fresh air that has been adjusted to the desired temperature (not that hard to understand)

@Omgstop Yes! Wasn't saying your house doesn't breathe – just trying to explain to pp that rainy weather isn't usually the cause of mould in UK houses. Don't think I would personally like your set-up but glad it works for you (albeit when MIL isn't sabotaging it :), though do envy your lack of dust!
