To not want my house to smell constantly?

I'm in a houseshare and we have no extractor fan in the kitchen.

Whenever my housemate cooks it's always something really strong smelling. Every time I leave my room or come home I'm hit in the face by a wall of really strong cooking smell and it's starting to grate on me.

I've politely asked him to close the kitchen door or open the window but he refused.

If I open the window myself he will have a go at me and close it.

I sprayed air freshener to combat the smell once and he had a go at me for "spraying that shit" and I am now forbidden to spray it in the house.

I'm trying to avoid arguing over it because he makes me feel like I'm being irrational, maybe I am. Though I'm trying to move out as this is one of many issues.

AIBU? Does anyone here enjoy their house smelling like old food constantly, or do you close the door / open a window etc?

I cannot deal with foul smells from cooking 🤢 always always have the windows open and the extractor fan on

CuriousaboutSamphire · 01/03/2019 15:32

Oh! So HE can make any smell he likes but you, (female?) must do as you are told?

Just keep spraying and telling him you'll stop when he airs the kitchen.

Basically, who made him the Boss of the House?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 01/03/2019 15:34

And do tell your landlord why you are leaving

He makes the house smell
He is aggressive when asked to have some consideration
You don't wish to live somewhere you can't treat as your home

RednaxelasPony · 01/03/2019 15:34

Forbids the kitchen door to be closed?

What a nutter.

I would have a go if you sprayed air freshener as well because it’s disgusting and just adds cheap chemical smell on top of whatever else is there. I would, however, INSIST that the windows were opened for at least some amount of time every day, cooking or no cooking. If he’s so disgusting that he won’t air the house I’d find a new housemate.

Rottencooking · 02/03/2019 13:24

Yeah I don't like air freshener either 😂 I think I've done it twice. It's reserved for shitey cooking smells!

It's not like I asked him not to cook, or to change what he's cooking. The solution of keeping the kitchen door shut is so simple that it's beyond me why he just won't do it? And why he wasn't doing it anyway? I can't remember this ever being a problem anywhere I've lived because people seem to do it automatically!

Unless he’s the landlord he doesn’t get to decide whether air freshener is sprayed or whether a window is opened! He sounds batshit. Keep spraying.

Ooh, I hate the smell of 'fried' (I find pancakes the worst, the smell seems to linger for days!!) I always light candles in the kitchen and lounge and open doors (when it's not freezing!)

JaneEyre07 · 02/03/2019 13:38

Our extractor fan broke last year, and I always have washing on an airer in the dining room. Within days we'd all really noticed that our washing smelt of cooking! DDs use an airfryer a lot for doing chips/wedges in, and that was the overwhelming smell. We soon started to shut the kitchen door and open the window.

I'd ask your LL for an extractor in the kitchen. Doesn't have to be one over the hob/cooker, one on the outside wall will be just as effective. Can you talk to your other housemates so you can present a united front to the stinky housemate too?

StrawberrySquash · 02/03/2019 13:57

I don't understand why he said no to closing the door. That makes it seem like a power struggle to me and is shitty.
Open windows can make the place cold, so what you want there varies and I'm not a fan of air freshener.
I'm mostly of the opinion that food smells and we should just get on with that, but he does sound like an arse.

Nanny0gg · 02/03/2019 14:09

I'd open every window in the house till the smell goes or he shuts the door!
