AIBU to ask family to bring their own food?

I have family visiting for Easter. I know they have been "forward purchasing" in case of shortages caused by any no-deal Brexit, as have I. Would I be unreasonable to ask then to bring their own food to avoid depleting my store? The children will eat up all my pasta and pesto in next to no time. And I don't want to waste freezer space on fish fingers, which I never eat.

OP posts:
Singlenotsingle · 28/02/2019 18:59

I bought a six-pack of baked beans and a 1kg pack of dried pasta. I'm sure that'll see us through! Grin

JayneyMc4 · 28/02/2019 19:01

Is this a joke post? Stockpiling food? Grudging pasta? Get a bloody grip!

SinkGirl · 28/02/2019 19:20

Ps there won't be shortages, our shops want to sell us stuff (prices may rise though)

Dear lord, are you really this dense?

What happens with customs and the border has nothing to do with the shops or manufacturers! Is this not getting through to people?

I’m honestly stunned by how blasé people are, but laugh it up - it’s not in my interests to convince anyone else to be prepared. Come the end of March I’ll either have a great source of amusement, watching you all scrap over the last tin of tuna on the news, or a couple of months worth of tinned goods, toiletries and cleaning supplies that I’ve already paid for,

SinkGirl · 28/02/2019 19:23

Those of you finding the idea of stockpiling ridiculous, what do you think will happen to the borders if we leave without a deal? I’m genuinely curious where you all get your confidence from.

How do you think the food and medicines will get in?

LightAsTheBreeze · 28/02/2019 19:45

Do people really eat that much pasta, all the prepping threads are full of people stockpiling pasta, are you going to eat it all if there is no shortages. A small bag lasts two of us about six months well DH as I don’t eat it, people must eat loads of the stuff

LimeKiwi · 28/02/2019 20:55

Dunno what's funniest -

  • the OP inviting people over to stay, has plenty of food in but refuses to let them near it/bring your own damn pasta visions of OP sat with shotgun guarding it

  • people turning it into a replikit Brexit armageddon dooooom post X 90000 like usual

How many times can we get brexit bingo on one thread in a day @TheElementsSong ??

I love this thread. Think it's my favourite brexit one so far for the sheer ignorance and ostrich behaviour of many posters.

There should be a Brexit Classics in due course for gems such as this.

SparklySneakers · 28/02/2019 21:05

LightAsTheBreeze we get through a bag or more a week. Family of 4. My mum wouldn't get through one in a year. Pasta is very popular. It's cheap, easy to cook and extremely versatile. It's a staple in many households and tends to be popular with children. Mine love pasta as do I. Some people eat more potatoes, some eat more rice. We are pasta people and I enjoy a variety of dishes. My children are less adventurous and think the plainer the better but I have hope.
Not sure why you find it so difficult to believe that people would stockpile a foodstuff that is long-life, cheap, cheerful, versatile, and easy to cook.
Out of curiosity, IF you were prepping, what would your foods of choice be?

LimeKiwi · 28/02/2019 21:08

Is this a joke post? Stockpiling food? Grudging pasta? Get a bloody grip!
You obviously haven't wandered into the Brexit hoarding mass hysteria threads on the Brexit forum to even be asking that Grin

bababoom100 · 28/02/2019 21:13

If one of my relatives asked me that I would seriously question their sanity! Bring your own food so as not to deplete brexit stores....I mean for goodness sake!

SparklySneakers · 28/02/2019 21:18
JayneyMc4 · 28/02/2019 21:19

LimeKiwi
I will not be wandering into those threads, deary me there are some crazies out there. 🙄

Poloshot · 28/02/2019 21:21

Of course you're being unreasonable 😂😂 ffs

maddiemookins16mum · 28/02/2019 21:21

Honestly, the world is going mad. The world isn’t going to end in a month (it better feckin not I’ve got tickets booked for Joseph in June).

LimeKiwi · 28/02/2019 21:22

Thanks LimeKiwi for the latest full house with "hysteria" and "hoarding."

You're welcome, lol

LightAsTheBreeze · 28/02/2019 21:24

SparklySneakers. I don't prep as such but we generally have about 1-3 months worth of stuff in anyway, We eat rice in moderation, there is a 5kg bag of Tilda in the pantry which we seem to have had forever but I prefer potatoes and we also have loads of veg, we have a freezer in the garage to store any excess and we mostly eat stuff like lamb chops, chicken, fish, stuff like that, there is probably about 30 tins of various mackerel fillets in the pantry to have on toast and lots of tinned stuff like that, corned beef, baked beans, etc etc. DH occasionally likes bolognese but that is the only pasta dish we have.

LimeKiwi · 28/02/2019 21:25

LimeKiwi I will not be wandering into those threads

You do right, you'll come slowly backing out a cross between doubting your own/others sanity and feeling the need to run to the shops, kick the side panels off the bath and stockpile bags of lentils/tins of beans even if you don't even bloody like lentils and beans lol

AutumnCrow · 28/02/2019 21:31

A small bag lasts two of us about six months ... DH and I don’t eat it

Well it would, wouldn't it?

Bluntness100 · 28/02/2019 21:32

Come the end of March I’ll either have a great source of amusement, watching you all scrap over the last tin of tuna on the news, or a couple of months worth of tinned goods, toiletries and cleaning supplies that I’ve already paid for

Well I think we all know it's thr latter, but enjoy your dried and tinned foods 🤣

Cloudtree · 28/02/2019 21:35

it’s not in my interests to convince anyone else to be prepared

Its in everybody's interests for as many people as possible to have some emergency supplies. The more people who have thought about things in advance, the better for all of us.

bellinisurge · 28/02/2019 21:37

What have I missed? Lots of bingo by the sounds of it.Grin

Op, I would add to my supplies to factor in their short visit. I personally think trying to keep things as friendly and normal as possible, particularly if children are part of it, is a good idea. Among close family and friends, that is.
In what should be the unlikely event that they take the piss, tell them to make themselves useful or fuck off home.

SparklySneakers · 28/02/2019 21:40

Ah, we are all veggie and don't eat much in the way of meat substitutes so pasta, veg and cheese are our go to meal in various guises.
I've got about 3 weeks of stuff in and am glad of it. Even if nothing drastic happens with brexit I will continue to keep extra food in incase of bad weather, illness or financial strain to provide a buffer until things are back to normal again. I used to shop every few days for various bits and bobs along with one big weekly shop but have changed my habits now and become a more efficient shopper, cook more meals from scratch, have tried new recipes, have taken advantage of offers and generally feel better knowing I have that buffer. I have bottled water after experiencing water shortages a few times over the last couple of years due to burst mains. Discovering you have no water at 7 am with 3 children to get ready for school, no way to get to the shops in time or transport the amount of water needed is not fun. Therefore having a few bottles of water for emergencies is a great idea.

Parker231 · 28/02/2019 21:49

I’m amazed at how many people have no idea how the supply chain works for supermarket items. The majority are not produced and packaged in the UK. I can’t believe that people still have no understanding of a no deal. How do you think your food items will get into the UK?

SparklySneakers · 28/02/2019 21:53

Parker231 the unicorns will magic food and medicines in over rainbows to the faithful.

SinkGirl · 28/02/2019 21:55

Well I think we all know it's thr latter, but enjoy your dried and tinned foods 🤣

You clearly know more than the government does if you’re so sure!
