AIBU to ask family to bring their own food?

I have family visiting for Easter. I know they have been "forward purchasing" in case of shortages caused by any no-deal Brexit, as have I. Would I be unreasonable to ask then to bring their own food to avoid depleting my store? The children will eat up all my pasta and pesto in next to no time. And I don't want to waste freezer space on fish fingers, which I never eat.

How very weird! Op if I invite family to stay I provide food unless we change plans like eating out then we all chip in because I'm poor Blush

IDoN0tCare · 28/02/2019 14:06

What kind of farmer are you?

Maybe they grow beans, such as haricot. Grin

doIreallyneedto · 28/02/2019 14:07

@SparklySneakers - What kind of farmer are you?

A puppy farmer maybe? It's the only type of farmer I can think of who would be so clueless.

SparklySneakers · 28/02/2019 14:08

Cress farmer I reckon

IDoN0tCare · 28/02/2019 14:09

MyBreadIsEggy is there any way you can buy them online? Also make sure they give you a good date. You don’t want some with such a short date that they’re of no use later.

FuerzaAreaUruguay · 28/02/2019 14:10

C'mon, just listen to Choc - England . . . not 'The UK' but England, because Scotland, Wales and NI don't matter for fuck to people like this.

borntobequiet · 28/02/2019 14:19

Thanks for the replies, except for the daft Y2K ones which are just silly. No time to read through all just now. Will be back later.

Yet another bloody brexit stockpiling thread.

Yet another bloody brexit stockpiling thread.

Yet another bloody poster jumping on a thread that apparently doesn’t interest them. Thanks for the bump. Grin

Yet another bloody poster jumping on a thread that apparently doesn’t interest them. Thanks for the bump. grin Grin Well it does interest me. The ridiculous OP with a story about visitors for a start.

borntobequiet · 28/02/2019 14:44

The story is true, as is my concern. I’m a grandmother with limited means (and storage space), with children and grandchildren coming to stay (a bit cramped, but hey ho) for a few days. Yes, I can be ridiculous sometimes, but in this case? Really?

Gth1234 · 28/02/2019 14:48

forward purchasing for Brexit??
What a laugh.

If you invited someone, you should have settled terms at the start.

derxa · 28/02/2019 14:49

Fair enough born. What happens normally when your family comes to stay?

IDoN0tCare · 28/02/2019 14:49

I’m a grandmother with limited means (and storage space), with children and grandchildren coming to stay Ignoring Brexit, I’m surprised they come empty handed to someone’s house, who is on limited means. I would ask if they could bring something with them, as you do find so many to feed, a struggle.

ladymariner · 28/02/2019 15:19

Pasta and pesto for an Easter meal for your guests Hmm....just tell them what you're planning, op, I'm sure they won't be depleting your precious stocks after all!

pelirocco123 · 28/02/2019 15:24

As long as they bring plenty of tin foil you will be fine

you could of course eat one of the guests and freeze the rest ..win win

fingernailsbitten · 28/02/2019 15:32

I'm not stockpiling anything and do not intend to start.
Brexit will cause ripples for sure but i'd be more worried for the people who can't get medicines and vaccines quickly because they need those to live.

I am certain I can manage on british grown veg and british reared meat, eggs, chicken etc.

We will not starve.

The scaremongers have done number on a lot of people.

We'll still have civilisation. Chill your boots and relax.

If I get really desperate I'll live on air, rainwater and dust

SilverySurfer · 28/02/2019 15:33

Not going for hostess with the mostess award then OP? It would be cringemakingly embarrassing to ask them to bring their own food. Could you not buy a bit extra each week until they arrive

There’s no point arguing with remoaners who have read every scare mongering article they can get their sad little hands on.

Scaremongering is their raison d'etre, whilst clutching their crystal balls close to their bosoms. Shame they don't realise they are cracked.

pelirocco123 · 28/02/2019 15:34

@DoIreallyneedto
Oh bless you. You haven't a clue. These people called "farmers" in England (not sure why they rest of the UK doesn't get a look in) produce nowhere near enough food to feed anywhere near the population. Even if they did, we have this thing in England (and many other countries, including the rest of the UK) called the hunger gap, when winter crops run out and early summer crops have not yet begun, so farmers will have even less available to feed the English. But hey, old potatoes and cabbage make for a lovely diet.

that will be why the farmers on TV this morning were upset because they will have problems exporting into Europe?

We havent been the best nation for farming to provide enough food , but that is why there has been subsidies ..to encourage people to farm and produce food
Its not the lack of food production thats the problem , its over consumption and waste , thats at the consummer end and at the manufactoring end
Growing up in the 60's we ate and thrived on a fraction of the food that is eaten today , there was no waste because food was bloody expensive .It would take a bigger disaster than Brexit to see us starve

doIreallyneedto · 28/02/2019 15:38

@fingernailsbitten - I am certain I can manage on british grown veg and british reared meat, eggs, chicken etc

Because nobody else will have thought of that so the fact that British grown stuff is insufficient to feed anywhere near the full population won't matter as they'll all be running around in circles wondering where to get their avocados?

Eat each other and cancel each other out. You are all barking

pellrocco remember winter 62/62 let me remind you - due to freezing long winter there was a severe shortage of potatoes & over root veg - OK you say but we have had a mild winter BUT population is far larger/ageing population (medicine is a worry) & much of our mixed diet is international - the sheep farmers in wales are cash croppers rather than everyday diet suppliers & they are worried about whether they will be economically viable - fruit/dairy products (& specialized dairy free equivalents).cereals (we may produce wheat but it isn't always suitable for the amount of bread we eat) & the fact that much less land is under production & our food supply is very intertwined with Europe - prior to 1974 UK food was seasonal & in winter not very good quality & restricted. - no I haven't stored much because I don't think you can - Aside from the serious bit onto the more light hearted side: invite family especially plump ones & all those in- laws you don't really like :) (making smokehouse in back garden eyeing neighbours & sizing them up …..evil snigger...)
