To ask how to treat a 10mo with a temp of 40.2

Shamelessly posted here for traffic Blush

Ds2 is 10months. He hasn't been unwell, not even snotty . Yesterday afternoon at lunchtime he wouldn't eat which is unlike him. Cried and crashed out and slept most of the day and night. He had a temp of 38-39.5 all day despite regular Calpol and ibuprofen.
Today he's been the same, eating and drinking okay but sleeping longer than normal and high temps.
Still doesn't appear poorly. Isn't upset just raging hot.
He had Calpol at 6pm. Ibu at 8pm. Just been to check on him at 10.30pm before i went to bed and temp is highest yet at 40.2.
He had gone to bed happy and in a babygrow with no vest or sleeping bag.

Is a temp alone worth doing anything about
If they're not seeming poorly / rashy/ upset?

I've given him more Calpol at 10.30 but he's maxed out on his doses now for both meds in a 24hr period so I'm at a loss

My plan is currently stay awake till 11.30 Then go and check temp again to see if it's coming down. Does this sound the right thing to do?

@MiGi... so sick? Where is this child that is so sick??
I'm aware if my son who has had a temperature for a few days that is lower today but still slightly up and has seen a doctor?

I don't mean to panic you op but my 9 month old baby only had a temp of 38.5 and was eating okayish and still playing etc but I took him to A&E as I still wasn't happy as the temp wasn't coming down after 2 days of home treatment. Any he was admitted to hospital and treated with some powerful antibiotics as he had a secondary infection following his initial croup diagnoses.

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 27/02/2019 15:42

By the way 111 have advised that it'll be best to see doc again today while theyre still open. No mention of a&e.....

Am waiting for gp surgery to call me back as all of the emergency apts have gone but they said one of the nurses may be able to see him if they can't squeeze him in with any of the gps at all.

The responses to this thread are hysterical. OP I have 3 under 4 including a 5 month old, who over the winter all had viruses that caused fevers of over 40 on and off for 2 weeks. The doctor said the same as yours said to you. If your son is smiling, drinking and weeing, I really wouldn’t be worried.

Unihorn · 27/02/2019 16:01

My 10 month old had a high temp yesterday and today that didn't go with medicine. I took her to the GP at 10am today (about 24 hours after her first temperature spike, shock horror) and she's got a mild respiratory tract infection, diagnosed by a reddish throat. She hasn't been given antibiotics and I've been told to keep an eye for rashes, fewer than 2 wet nappies and very fast breathing. I never call 111 for just temperatures in babies because they will default tell you to go to A&E because they can't take the risk with a baby so young.

crispysausagerolls · 27/02/2019 16:09

I can’t get over that you didn’t call 111 last night. I absolutely would not have been able to sleep while my child had a temp of 40, especially post medication. You are extremely lucky nothing happened to him in the night.

arethereanyleftatall · 27/02/2019 16:16

Everyone's body temp is different. I have one child who gets to 40 regularly (every illness) and it's fine, just tucked up in bed to sleep it off. My other dc has never had a temp over 39, so 40 for her would be a different response.

MiGi777 · 27/02/2019 16:52

Dont go for me. If a child has a temperature of 40.2 it's a sick child. You're the one who kept posting here rather than taking him to the doctors last night when we all told you to. Shocking.

Bluemascara4 · 27/02/2019 17:50

Hopefully you won't get to see the same GP .

Good luck x

IHateUncleJamie · 27/02/2019 18:22

Keep us posted, OP. Flowers

needthisthread · 27/02/2019 18:31

What made you take his temperature OP?

Unihorn · 27/02/2019 18:37

@needthisthread presumably he was hot?? What an odd question.

needthisthread · 27/02/2019 18:43

presumably he was hot?? What an odd question.

Well I didn't think it was odd 🤷🏻‍♀️

The reason OP took the temperature in the first place may have given a clue as to what might be wrong, that's all.

But yeah 'presumably he was hot' - how dare I ask rather than simply 'presume'

lostfrequencies · 27/02/2019 18:46

I think you've been given a rough ride here Thanks I hope your DS is okay.

Quartz2208 · 27/02/2019 18:47

to be fair DS has had this 3 times and none of them were UTI - once turned out to be the most horrendous case of hand foot and mouth (started being really unwell on the Weds the blisters started the Friday morning) and the other two times one was an unknown infection that needed 2 sets of antibiotics to hit and the other an awful viral

The fact that it is coming down and he is eating and being himself inbetween is more in line with an awful viral

CottonSock · 27/02/2019 18:51

Op my eldest got awful temps like this. I took her to a and e once when she was a bit older and she said her neck hurt, she went floppy etc. But she was just prone to it I think.

SinkGirl · 27/02/2019 19:00

OP, I hope he is okay (and you).

My twins are currently battling what I suspect is exactly the same virus - most of the kids at nursery have come down with it. The one who had it first had random sky high temps with no other symptoms at all for two weeks. They didn’t come down right away with calpol and / or ibuprofen but would come down on their own after a bit. Got up to 41 at one point.

I had no idea what to do as the NHS advice is about fevers in conjunction with other symptoms really and he had none. Took him to the GP who found no sign of infection and said it must be viral. Took him back again when he’d had it for 10 days - still no infection. Then it turned into a nasty cough and cold for five days and now he’s just got a lingering cough.

The other twin started with it on Monday but he’s getting through it quicker so far, nasty cough already, but he’s been more sleepy and miserable.

A friend’s little one has exactly the same going on and she’s just had confirmation via swab that it’s flu. Our GP didn’t take any swabs so not sure if that’s what we have.

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 27/02/2019 19:00

Temp is now at 39.7, currently in car heading for a&e. Didn't get seen at the Docs in the end as nobody was available so was told to keep monitoring him but if no major change from this morning then try not to worry, if he did change call 111 again which ive decided against. I am worrying now though as we just cannot control it at all

mrsk28 · 27/02/2019 19:05

Good luck in a&e OP. Definitely the right thing to do at this point, even if it only gives you peace of mind that he's ok. But the temp is concerning, let us know how you get on.

mummy2three2014 · 27/02/2019 19:08

Hope your little guy is ok and a&e is quiet for you so your seen quickly sending hugs x

Delatron · 27/02/2019 19:09

Hope you get seen quickly. Definitely the right thing to do.

NameChange30 · 27/02/2019 19:09

Hope you won't have to wait too long to be seen.
Hope it's nothing serious but better to be safe than sorry.

thaegumathteth · 27/02/2019 19:11

Is it 39.7 with medicine?

Is he big for his age? The hospital may give a larger weight based dosage if so.
