Underpaid again

Sorry posting for traffic.

For the second month in a row I have been underpaid by around £300.

My manager said that as all the hours have gone through to pay roll and the pay is in motion (expecting it on the 28th and have received pay slips) I won't be able to get it again until next month so that will be 3 months I would have had to wait.. and thats if it goes through, she said she had sorted it this month but clearly hasn't so I'm losing faith tbh.

Does anyone know (and I'm clutching at straws because I know each business works differently) is there anyway I can get this moved forward so I get it now?? There must be something??

Does your company have an HR department? Take it to them. If not then go to the next senior person above your manager. Say you can't afford to wait longer again for the wages you're owed, and they will need to organise an emergency cheque payment or bank transfer for you. Are you in a union?

No sorry, it will be two months I would have had to wait.
It was originally for January's pay, I didn't get it and was told I will get it added to this pay. That's not happened so now I'm being told it will be on marches pay.

Can't they lend you the £300 and deduct it from next months pay? I know that's what many large employers do if they've messed up but don't know if that's across the board. It really sucks when they screw up like this and then just shrug their shoulders.

We always just get told there's nothing that can be done until the next pay cycle but it's a long time to wait!

I worrying that it will have to go through officially? Like Through tax etc which will mean they wont be able to do it till march.

Who's responsible for payroll? You need to speak to them directly.

Do you work for the NHS by any chance?

Can you not ask for a cheque for the amount owed? If it's a company surely they have a chequebook system for these type of errors

We have a payroll department so i will be speaking to them in the morning. They're not usually keen to help and just say it's the managers fault. They like to pass the blame.. I'm sure someone has had a pay moved forward because of something like this in the past so I have a feeling that there is something that can be done, they're just not telling us because it's a lot of (or more) work for them.

Whoever does the payroll can sanction this, BUT it's often a massive pain in the arse, so they don't typically like to do it. If you speak to someone in payroll and explain the situation (beg/plead) they may take pity on you and do the extra admin...worth a try at least!

I do payroll.
I cannot think of any reason why they cannot put this right.

I worked for a large hospitality chain that often did this to staff.
Turns out it was to keep wage bill down in quieter months and was never sorted till April

They can do a same day payment to you, then balance it out next pay day. They owe you the money- it's their mistake so they should put it right. Don't take no for an answer!

Usually there is a payroll cut off date fairly early in the month (earlier than you think) and any adjustments after that date get rolled forward into next month.

You can do 'off cycle' payroll adjustments in theory but lots of payrolls don't like doing them if they can possibly help it as they are messy and if they use a payroll provider company (most do these days) then there are extra costs to consider cos you have to pay them to rerun it if it's not their error. It's therefore fairly common practice not to in my experience (not a payroll person but work with them a lot)

It may not be payrolls fault if they didn't get the instructions early enough but I would raise it above your manager as it's pretty shoddy for it to be missed twice and you do want it all sorted before the new tax year starts.

It's my managers for not adding on some overtime that I did.

I used to work for a well known pub company who did this to me every month as well. Always ‘we can only add it to next month’ but the next month they’d add on the wrong amount and pay me less hours AGAIN! So each month i was down more and more. I just accepted it until the 4th month in a row and rang the head office. Apparently, it costs them a fee of sometlike £17 to pay into a single employee’s bank account, so they like to group cock ups together the next month to save on fees. All utter bollocks if you ask me, still don’t know if it’s true but that’s the reason I was given

I work in HR and we have set payments between payroll for this kind of thing, it cannot be paid in full here due to tax but there can be an advance which is then taken from the next payroll.
If you work somewhere large they should have something in place.

I have an awful feeling you work for the same big organisation I do! Line Managers have done this a lot for the Feb payroll. Lots of calls....

I work in HR and am responsible for payroll but we do use a third party provider, if this was our company you'd have missed the payroll cut off date at this stage in the month but the Finance department could definitely arrange for a payment to be made to you so you absolutely shouldn't have to wait until the end of March. In future if you work some overtime I'd email the confirmation to your manager asking for them to authorise the hours and cc Payroll so things don't get missed. It's a PITA when managers don't inform us of payroll amendments until it's too late in the month.

Just to add my voice - I process payroll and the single worst thing is underpaying someone. I’d do whatever I could to ensure you git your money.

They can estimate the net, advance you the cash and then put it through the payroll in March to take account of the tax and NI correctly.

It is NOT difficult.

I do this several times a year when managers don’t give me timesheets on time and I don’t want employees going short.

Where I work the payroll team would do a faster payment (BACS) and if it was the managers fault the cost of making that payment would be bourne by that department. Definitely possible to do an additional payment and in fact a whole other payrun if for example they forgot everyone's overtime or something.
