Posting in here for traffic. I suffer from chronic fatigue, which in turn is partly caused by a sleep disorder I've had all my life, and am trying to get a handle on how much sleep other people manage most nights, and how much they'd ideally want/need to sleep in order to feel properly refreshed the next day.

I'm not a journalist/researcher BTW (I have a solid posting history on here) - I'm just really curious about this as my fatigue issues have been impacting my life quite severely of late, and I'm trying to get a handle on how 'out of kilter' I am, so to speak, compared to other people. I do realise a lot of this is conditioned by whether or not people have small kids/tricky working hours Grin but I'm interested to hear how I 'compare' anyway... thanks in advance.

I get about 7/7 and a half hours sleep a night.
At the moment I’m 23 weeks pregnant and would like a bit more as I get very tired in the afternoons, but pre-pregnancy it was absolutely fine.

IndianaMoleWoman · 23/02/2019 20:29

I usually get 5-7 hours a night, but can be much less/nothing if one of the children is ill. Before children I felt like around 9 hours was necessary and could have up to 12 at the weekend, particularly after a night out. Nowadays I do feel tired most of the time, but on the rare occasion I get 8 hours+ I feel invincible the next day!

Bambamber · 23/02/2019 20:32

I work out of hours around looking after my toddler who still wakes in the night. So I generally get about 5 hours broken sleep, but ideally I would like to get at least 8 hours. My situation isn't permanent though and fingers crossed I'll be working less hours soon!

Ellieboolou27 · 23/02/2019 20:33

I need about 9-10, I get about 5-7. I could get my 9-10 if I actually stopped taking my kindle to bed.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/02/2019 20:33

According to my Fitbit stats, I get 7 hrs 3 minutes average a night but my biggest gripe is that I get hardly any deep sleep. So last night, 12 mins deep sleep, night before 34 mins, some nights I get as little as 2 minutes deep sleep. I can really tell when I've had a long run of poor quality sleep as I feel so irritable and frayed at the edges, even when I've slept a reasonable amount. It's so hard to improve sleep quality though, I wear earplugs and eye mask, I try not to drink alcohol or eat too late at night, and I listen to hypnosis. Still have rubbish sleep. The only thing I could probably do would he give up coffee although i don't think I'd be able to function!

Bambamber · 23/02/2019 20:33

If I wasn't working into the early hours of the morning I could easily sleep over 8 hours

GMtoBe · 23/02/2019 20:35

I get about 5/6 broken hours a night but ideally could do with 7/8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

olivo · 23/02/2019 20:35

I get 8 to 8 1/2 hrs during the week. My optimum is 10hrs,

WoahThereMama · 23/02/2019 20:35

I’d like eight hours. I probably get about 5-6 hrs broken - the slightest noise seems to wake me. I have a 2.5yr old and a 3 month baby. I literally haven’t slept properly since I was 10weeks pregnant with my eldest!

hopeishere · 23/02/2019 20:36

At the minute I get 6/7 hours. I got to bed at 10 but struggle to get to sleep. I've started waking - thanks to DH - around five. I struggle to get back to sleep. I'm very tired. I need more sleep.

I'm going to London for a night this week. I'm excited about a night in bed on my own. Smile

TroysMammy · 23/02/2019 20:37

7 1/2 hours. I'm asleep within minutes but I wish I could sleep straight through without waking to go to the toilet, kicking the quilt off my legs, flicking the quilt back again. I have restless legs and take medication but I still feel like I've run a marathon or been performing in River Dance each night.

EducatingArti · 23/02/2019 20:38

There's an excellent book called " Why we sleep" it explains loads of stuff about sleep and talks about not just how much sleep is needed, but how much of different types of sleep you need etc. I'd highly recommend it.

prettypossums · 23/02/2019 20:38

Between 6-7 hours a night. My alarm is set pretty early, so I’m virtually never able to wake naturally. I often wonder how much more sleep I would get if l could sleep as long as I liked

Her0utdoors · 23/02/2019 20:40

I'd like ALL the sleep. I get 6-8 hours with between 2 and infinity wake ups. If I get a 4 hour chunk in that I feel fairly functional the next day. God I miss sleep.

ememem84 · 23/02/2019 20:41

At present it’s atound 4-4.5. It’s broken sleep though.

I’m currently pregnant and before this I was getting maybe 6. Before I had ds though I could do a solid 8 hours. I remember those days....

Currently aside from being pregnant, ds is teething, and I have a sinus infection. And dh is a snorer suddenly. He’ll be lucky if I don’t smother him one day..:

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 23/02/2019 20:43

I get around 6 hours a night Monday to Friday as I finish work late and am back there early the following morning, it's not enough and I'm exhausted all week. Weekends I get around 10.5+ hours to make up for it, I would love a solid 9 hours every night but because of my job that's not possible.

sunshineandshowers21 · 23/02/2019 20:44

for me to wake up feeling energised and refreshed i need at least 8 hours. however with three kids - one a four month old baby - i get nowhere near that. last week my mum had all my kids for the night and i slept from 5pm til 8am. genuinely the best sleep i’ve had in years! my boyfriend however can sleep for as little as four hours and be up and raring to go.

CoffeeMakesTheWorldBetter · 23/02/2019 20:45

I have fibro and Chronic fatigue and ideally need 12 hrs of sleep but being a single mum to 2 kids I tend to get about 8-9 sometimes more, sometimes less. But I always have a nap during the day! on a bad day though I could sleep for over 24hrs!

mrsfollowill · 23/02/2019 20:47

I normally sleep a solid 6 hrs 12.30- 6.30 Monday to Friday. No young kids here and am always ready to sleep at that time so literally head on pillow and sleep- used to go earlier but would spend 2 hrs tossing and turning. At the weekend or on holiday tend to stay up later and lie in so maybe 2.00am- 10.00am so 8 hrs ish. Always feel better after a couple of 8 hr nights. Slept 11.30- 8.30 last night and felt great! Was a bit drunk though Blush

RoseGoldEagle · 23/02/2019 20:59

Before kids I’d say 9 hours was perfect- asleep by 10 and up at 7, if I pushed that to 11 to 7 for a few nights, or I had to get up earlier, I’d feel tired in the day after a while. Since kids I get about 7 hours, and often that’s interrupted, which I know isn’t that bad but I do feel constantly low level tired.

Mummyshark2019 · 23/02/2019 21:00

I get 6-7 hours sleep. Pre child used to get 8-9

RomanyQueen1 · 23/02/2019 21:03

I sleep anything between 4 and 6 hours. I need 7 hours but rarely get this.

SweetheartNeckline · 23/02/2019 21:06

I get about 7.5 hours' sleep in 24 hours but this is often interrupted. Luckily I have always been able to nap (DC permitting!) so I catch up that way if I need to. As a one off, less than 5 hours (in any combination, broken or otherwise) and I feel unwell - long-term I need at least 6 hours in 24, again in any combination, to function reasonably. More than 9 hours and I feel sluggish.

Sparrowlegs248 · 23/02/2019 21:07

I get 5 to 6 broken hours. I would live 7 or 8 unbroken .

MaggieAndHopey · 23/02/2019 21:07

6-7 is normal for me, and I don't seem to need much more even when I have the opportunity for a lie-in.
