Posting in here for traffic. I suffer from chronic fatigue, which in turn is partly caused by a sleep disorder I've had all my life, and am trying to get a handle on how much sleep other people manage most nights, and how much they'd ideally want/need to sleep in order to feel properly refreshed the next day.

I'm not a journalist/researcher BTW (I have a solid posting history on here) - I'm just really curious about this as my fatigue issues have been impacting my life quite severely of late, and I'm trying to get a handle on how 'out of kilter' I am, so to speak, compared to other people. I do realise a lot of this is conditioned by whether or not people have small kids/tricky working hours Grin but I'm interested to hear how I 'compare' anyway... thanks in advance.

I like 8-10 hours and I like a good snooze during the day.

Totally impossible with DS though.

SD1978 · 23/02/2019 21:12

5-6 hours, I work night shift. During my one 'night' I sleep in the dark- anything up to about 10hrs.

HavelockVetinari · 23/02/2019 21:12

Ooh, I would be soooooo happy with 9 or even 10 hours of sleep per night! Unfortunately a baby that is a crap sleeper and a bad back mean I'm awake tons more than I'd like to be, I'm lucky if I get 6-7 hrs of VVV broken sleep.

When DS was tiny, I slept about 3 hours a night for months, trying to catch up at weekends when DH could take over during the day except for feeds. It was brutal, and lasted about 6 months (he slept in max 45 minute bursts all flipping night). Currently TTC DC#2, I'm really hoping we don't get another awful sleeper!

NCforthis2019 · 23/02/2019 21:14

12-730 (sometimes broken)

This week has been a bitch though - whole house is sick.

madcatladyforever · 23/02/2019 21:17

I need 9 to function but get 2 as my brain goes to raves at night.

Dowser · 23/02/2019 21:18

Midnight till 8 would be my dream come true and then bouncing out of bed at 9 full of beans would feel like a massive lottery win

Ribbonsonabox · 23/02/2019 21:18

I get about 5 to 7 hours of broken sleep and I feel terrible... I need 8 hrs to function really.. ideally I'd have ten but those days are long gone... 7 month old baby and 4 year old... 7mnth old wakes every few hours.. 4yo sleeps through but wakes up 7.30-8 am and then is up for the day errgh so I cant really nap during the day.. hes only at preschool 3 days so that's the only time I get a nap in the day..
Sleep is the most important thing to me I am awful on no sleep..
My husband seems to function fine on 4hrs I've never seen anything like it.. even when he has the opportunity to get more sleep hed rather be awake... we were a bad match in that sense.. he can also just fall asleep instantly anywhere regardless of noise or light... I take ages to fall asleep then even a quiet cough could wake me up

inthekitchensink · 23/02/2019 21:18

I need 9 hrs a night and if I don’t get it I have to sleep 12 hours one night at the weekend to function. Like you I have chronic fatigue and during a bad patch I needed 2-4 hours of sleep during the day.

longearedbat · 23/02/2019 21:18

I have no trouble going to sleep, but I tend to wake all the bloody time. Either to pee, because I am too hot/too cold, or then later on, something is aching, usually a hip or a knee. If I sleep for 3 hours unbroken I am happy. When you get older, lying down is bliss, but so is getting up and getting the creaky old body moving again.
I must be getting enough though because I am never sleepy during the day.

ChampooPapi · 23/02/2019 21:19

8-10 hours, but I do go to sleep during the week at 9pm

AndromedaPerseus · 23/02/2019 21:19

Optimum is 7-8 hours usually get 6-7 and often interrupted no small dc but my solid sleep patterns have never recovered from having children

unweavedrainbow · 23/02/2019 21:19

I also have chronic fatigue caused by a secondary condition. I get between 7 and 7 1/2 hours sleep most nights which is enough. My major issue is waking up; according to my Fitbit, some nights I wake up 33 times! No wonder I'm always exhausted...

PeppermintCactus · 23/02/2019 21:22

Get 6/7 hours, with interruptions from DC.

Would like 7/8, without interruptions.

youvegottobekidding · 23/02/2019 21:23

I go to bed usually around 11-11.30pm, but it takes me a while to drift off, then I wake up a couple of times in the night, so by my reckoning probably 6-7 broken hours. I would love to just have a FULL nights sleep and be able to fall asleep quickly like my DH, he can be snoring within 10 seconds flat. I feel dug up when I wake up so I do need more sleep, going to start going to bed earlier to see if that helps!

HogMother · 23/02/2019 21:23

Before kids would have 8 - 10 hours, deep unrousable sleep, and I felt amazing. Even after a full day in the pub, if I got 8 hours sleep I’d be up with no I’ll effects.
Since second trimester of first pregnancy I’ve been up at 5am more than not. 7am is a lie in. The child is now 5.
I’m averaging about 6 hours broken sleep at the minute, and it’s been a lot worse in the past.
It’s actually starting to catch up with me, and I feel drained.

BlueMerchant · 23/02/2019 21:26

5.5 - 6 hours. Bed at 11ish read for an hour. Up at 6. Wake naturally at this time weekdays & weekends. If I try to stay in bed longer and happen to doze then I have a banging headache so I get straight up.

Intohellbutstayingstrong · 23/02/2019 21:26

Some nights zero sleep. A good night is 2 or 3 hours. Seriously jealous of anyone who gets 7+. It is causing no end of issues in my life

Stormwhale · 23/02/2019 21:26

I get about 7 hours of broken sleep. I wake again and again through the night despite earplugs. The tiniest noises wake me, and dh snores! I feel best on 8hrs.

I get between 6 & 7 hours during the week but probably need closer to 9. I catch up at the weekend, with around 10 hours.

notangelinajolie · 23/02/2019 21:35

6 hours sleep a night on average. I can manage on that. Sometimes I hardly sleep and others I sleep longer. I find that more than 8 hours sleep leaves me feeling groggy and generally worse. Some would call it insomnia but I don't feel that way at all. I never stress about sleep (or lack of it) because I believe if my body needs sleep it will find a way. I quite like being the only one awake when everyone else is asleep.

I do feel tired sometimes but I have Vitamin B12 Deficiency so put tiredness down to that - not lack of sleep.

BrizzleMint · 23/02/2019 21:53

3 when I have a lot of work and it's school holidays, 6-9 when it's not.

TheStarOnTheChristmasTree · 23/02/2019 21:58

I have fibromyalgia and need 12 hours at night and at least a 2 hour nap through the day. I get that on a weekend but only 8-9 hours through the week due to work and kids. I feel like I'm slowly dying of exhaustion!

Vinorosso74 · 23/02/2019 22:00

8 would be lovely. I went through a phase of waking every night for about 2 hours just lying dead still and would drift off again eventually. DP fidgets so much and ends up "in my space" which disturbs me at least twice a night. I think I average 6, 7 if I'm very lucky. DCat occasionally disturbs me but he is the lesser issue.
I would love a bed to myself for a night every so often!

flirtygirl · 23/02/2019 22:01

I have had broken sleep for years now. 2 decades.

Some nights I'm lucky to get 3 or 4 hours, I try to aim for 7, I get between 4 and 8. It is usually broken, I wake up at light and noise and needing to go toilet. I also take hours to relax my brain enough to sleep.

I need 12 to 14 hrs of sleep, no kidding. When I take pills and zone out for that long then after the blurry feeling has worn off, I might feel a little bit better.

Usually I wake up tired.
