Posting in here for traffic. I suffer from chronic fatigue, which in turn is partly caused by a sleep disorder I've had all my life, and am trying to get a handle on how much sleep other people manage most nights, and how much they'd ideally want/need to sleep in order to feel properly refreshed the next day.

I'm not a journalist/researcher BTW (I have a solid posting history on here) - I'm just really curious about this as my fatigue issues have been impacting my life quite severely of late, and I'm trying to get a handle on how 'out of kilter' I am, so to speak, compared to other people. I do realise a lot of this is conditioned by whether or not people have small kids/tricky working hours Grin but I'm interested to hear how I 'compare' anyway... thanks in advance.

I don't get the cramping (yet), fortunately. I'm also getting the brain fog which lots of women seem to suffer with. It's rubbish getting old! (But better than the alternative, I guess Grin).

Jinglejanglefish · 25/02/2019 11:55

I get about 9 hours broken sleep as dd wakes up about 4 times a night (but back to sleep very quickly). My optimum would be 10 or 12 unbroken sleep.

Oysterbabe · 25/02/2019 11:57

I would like 8 hours, 11-7. I average between 5 and 6 due to children.

Megan2018 · 25/02/2019 11:59

I need 9 to function well - I also have a sleep disorder (abnormal dream wave) and 9 seems to be about right for me.
Rarely achieve 9 though! Usually 7 and I expect that to go to pot if this baby arrives!

ScottChegg · 25/02/2019 12:16

9 would be about right for me but I get about 6 or 7.

Jinglejanglefish · 25/02/2019 13:21

Megan2018

What’s abnormal dream wave, out of interest? I googled it and nothing came up except for what it means if you dream about tidal waves.

ButtMuncher · 25/02/2019 13:25

I usually get anywhere between 7-8 hours sleep - I think my sleep app on my Apple Watch is a bit inaccurate because I swear I don't sleep that long, probably more like 6.5-7.

At one stage when my now toddler was a baby I was lucky to get four broken hours, so I feel euphoric sometimes when I wake up and I've been asleep for 8 hours! Obviously when he's unwell (which he was last week) that changes as I'm on my own so it falls to me, but generally and when he's well he'll sleep through fine.

ButtMuncher · 25/02/2019 13:26

Oh and I probably got the same amount of sleep pre children - I was a nightmare for going to bed late before my DS was born Grin

Newadventure · 25/02/2019 13:29

It varies for me. Some nights i get around 5 hours but most often I'll get around 7 which i seem to be ok with, well, I can function.
I'd prefer 8-9 though (unbroken of course.. imagine that 😍)

pushingdaisies · 26/02/2019 13:04

I get maybe 5 hours a night if I'm lucky, I wake up at least most nights two or three times, so in the morning I don't really feel like I've had a restful sleep. Ideally I'd get 8 hours of solid sleep every night, but I can dream... or not because I'm awake most of the night Grin

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 26/02/2019 13:11

I sleep between 6-10 hours a night, depending on how late I stay up.
I'd like to sleep 23 hours out of 24.

DeadCertain · 26/02/2019 13:29

I get around 5 hours if I am lucky, depending upon whether DH's snoring once he has come to bed prevents me getting any after that - I have about 2 hours between going to bed and him coming to bed, switching on the light etc and waking me up. Some nights I get around 3 so I tend to give myself 1 - 1.5 hours in the afternoon as well (I am up at 0300 for work and tend to finish early too).

BlueSkiesLies · 26/02/2019 13:31

8 to 9

chaoscategorised · 26/02/2019 13:51

I get about 7.5 and I function best off 8 (no kids).

I'm really, really strict with myself and sleep - I bath or shower in the evening, so I do that before bed as it's supposed to help you drop off (something to do with body temperature), in bed by 11 ready to sleep, rarely stay up late for no reason (so if I had a night out, fine, up til 4am, but if it's a Friday evening and I'm not doing anything I try and stick to my schedule).

I'm lucky in that I CAN fall asleep relatively easily most of the time - I suffered horrendous insomnia, night terrors and sleep paralysis when I was in my late teens/early twenties, so I'm pretty protective over my sleep time now because lack of sleep led to me suffering quite badly with my mental health.

It is, very genuinely, one of the reasons I'm reluctant to have children. I cannot function off poor/little sleep and nor do I want to.

brieislife · 26/02/2019 14:20

I get around 6 hours most weeknights, and I spend all week tired and dopey, but coping. A bad night is less than 4 hours and then I’m absolutely no use.

I usually get about 8 on a weekend which helps me catch up. I really could do with 8 hours during the week too but I struggle to fall asleep.

Heybreya · 26/02/2019 14:22

Providing I'm eating well, a solid 7-8 does me perfect.

Heybreya · 26/02/2019 14:25

However, I often don't get that as I have 2 young kids. I often feel ok in the day despite this providing I keep going and again, eat well (healthy and enough), but crash earlier the next night. I often go to bed at 9 but can go as early as 8 if I need to.

Damntheman · 26/02/2019 14:25

I get usually between 6 and 7 hours but again, usually, my two year old wakes me at least once during the night. If I'm lucky it'll be at about 4.30 so I can go back to sleep again.. if it's less than an hour before my alarm goes off I can't go back to sleep and I'm screwed :( I'm tired a lot, sometimes I fall asleep on the floor after work while the kids play with their dad around me. Shame on me!

Ideally I'd like nine unbroken hours.. But that's not going to happen. I'd settle for 7-8. Before I had kids I could easily sleep 12 hours at the weekend if left to my own devices. I love sleeping!

GahWhatever · 26/02/2019 14:27

7-8 a night but I wake after about 5 hours for the loo. Bloody menopause!
When I slept right through I only needed 6-7 hours

BillywigSting · 26/02/2019 14:31

When left to my own devices I wake up naturally after 8 to 10 hours of sleep.

I typically get about 6 hours of not great quality sleep (mattress is ancient and not very comfortable but not replacing it until we move in couple of months).

I. Am. Shattered.

All of the time.

GlitterNails · 26/02/2019 14:37

I have fatigue/chronic pain and need around 12 hours sleep to function. Wake up lots and use melatonin to get to sleep. I’ve also been the other way and only slept very little and feel the same level of fatigue but still feel generally better on 12 hours. I get the most quality of life this way.

Hugtheduggee · 26/02/2019 14:38

Pre children : most nights 5-7 hours, with some nights less and sometimes a long lie in at the weekend. I was tired.

Baby/young child phase: range 6-9 hours, average about 7, though often in, 2 or more lumps. Felt relatively rested.

Now (3rd trimester pregnancy) 3-6 hours broken. I struggle to sleep before 2am. At least 50% of nights I then pee 4+ times and see every hour, with bouts of insomnia thrown in. I'm exhausted and teary.

I'd ideally like about 8-9 hours a night, but can function on 6/7 ok.

beenandgoneandbackagain · 26/02/2019 14:45

I aim for 8 hours and usually get between 7.5 and 8.

Sleep is a priority for me, along with fitness/regular exercise and a healthy diet.

I have a sleep disorder which kicks off more under stress, but that tends to keep my partner away rather than me.

BingisaweeArse · 26/02/2019 15:18

I easily need 10 but I have fibro so I guess we are similar on that front. Although I never feel rested even when I do get sleep.
