AIBU to hate cute words for food?

As in adults talking to each other saying they enjoy “a couple of squares of choccy” or “a couple of biccies” or some “veggies”.
And the word “nibbles” as in “she put some nibbles out on the table”.
Sounds so tossy to me.

Most people use the word supper to describe a casual dinner, and use it because they grew up with it.

People have been describing their evening meal as 'supper' for hundreds of years. It's hardly a new fad or pretentious. Hmm

Jamhandprints · 24/02/2019 16:39

If you grew up with supper I suppose it's ok but if you've just been saying it since you moved to posh London then no.
I mean we used to have supper which meant cornflakes before bed if we were still hungry after dinner but a hot evening meal at 8pm with a starter and wine that is called supper is pretentious. If you call it dinner, then fine.

Marlena1 · 24/02/2019 16:59

I say "i'm veggie" as the word vegitarian sounds quite long and formal. Kinda makes it sound very serious and that you have an issue with ppl eating meat! Maybe I am overthinkingHmm

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 24/02/2019 17:15

I say supper for evening meal. I think it does away with all that dinner and tea malarkey, there's no doubt at all that supper is a late evening meal

I was irrationally jealous of my northern cousins though, as they got supper before bed....my wannabe middleclass mother did not believe in it, no snacking in our house.

Ragwort · 24/02/2019 17:33

But what’s wrong with being ’formal’ about the fact you are vegetarian? Confused, surely it is an important message that you would need to give a host who was offering you a meal, if I am asking guests about their dietary needs I would much rather someone said ‘I am a vegetarian’ than a giggly comment about being ‘veggie’ Hmm.

Marlena1 · 24/02/2019 17:37

Ragwort, I don't remember saying I was "giggly". I also wasn't speaking in terms of being hosted, just generally if talking about food.

FrangipaniBlue · 24/02/2019 17:38

I agree about adults deliberately using cutesy baby names for food, like "din dins" or "dip dip" etc

But some of the words quoted on this thread aren't baby names or cutesy, they're simply slang or shortened versions....

Sarnie - perfectly acceptable
Sammidge - just no

and just when I thought "nom nom" was the most irritating phrase on the planet, Mumsnet gives me "nommage"

I now have "rage-age"

GrinAngry

IncrediblySadToo · 24/02/2019 17:48

Sorry Ragwort. I’m a Veggie.

Veggies
Nibbly bits
Bits & pieces

All fine with me & used here

Brew
Cuppa
Toastie
Roasties

Not used here but totally fine with me

Bikkies

Fine for cats/dogs

Yum yum
Nom nom
Choccy
Bicky
Eggy
Etc

Will all be shooting offences when I rule the world.

IncrediblySadToo · 24/02/2019 17:52

Not food related but Chillax gives the rage instantly. Seriously HATE it. Thank fuck it’s mostly died out.

Someone was trying to pass Twixmas off as a real word for the days between Christmas and New Year. I had to sit in my hands not to say what an absolute twat she was being (if you’re reading this... quietly take it on board and consider it my gift to you 🤣)

Pishogue · 24/02/2019 17:57

I'm definitely a vegetarian rather than a veggie -- the latter makes me think of some kind of children's entertainer dressed up as a giant carrot, running around shouting 'Eating your greens can be FUN, kids!'.

I think 'sarnie' annoys me because it's just a stupid, moany kind of word: 'Mu-um, make me a saarnieeee! No, not a cheese sarnie, a chocolate spread saaarnieeee!'

garbageduck · 24/02/2019 18:05

I call a small snack a "pocket snack".

It's just stuck really, so I might say to DH "ohh grab some pocket snacks on your way home". No further explanation is needed Grin

Ragwort · 24/02/2019 18:08

Sorry Marlena I didn’t mean to imply that you were ‘giggly’ but the phrase ‘veggie’ on menus or real life just really irritates me.

Marlena1 · 24/02/2019 19:11

Fair enough Ragwort I take your pointGrin

headinhands · 24/02/2019 20:26

We don't use cute words but do make and modify our own words for food. I know lots of other families do this too. Someone I know, their whole family says gravity instead of gravy. 😁

SpamChaudFroid · 24/02/2019 23:25

Tasty and yummy are disgusting, horrible words.

Not food related, but an awful ex I had used to refer to women's hormones as "whore-moans". If he perceived me to be pre-menstrual he'd say, "are your whores moaning. Twat.

TheresACatInMyLaundryBasket · 25/02/2019 22:44

I heard another today!
"Going to go for beverages after work". Fuck off Susan. The pub. You're going to the pub.

YoThePussy · 25/02/2019 23:20

Not heard Pocket Snack before, is a good one which may well start using myself.

AyoadesChinDimple · 25/02/2019 23:33

Spag Bog is bang wrong. It makes no sense.

RhymingRabbit · 25/02/2019 23:49

I wouldn't walk into a restaurant and order some Macca Cheese, or toast and scrambers... but i do say all of these within the safe confines of my house.

CommeDesPoissons · 26/02/2019 00:14

An ex boss of mine used to insist on "luncheon", which sounds vaguely pervy for some reason.

Please can we ban Jamie Oliver-style recipe names - Jamie's Totally Wicked Fish Pie. It's fish pie, we don't need your twee sales pitch!

Agree that yummy is intolerable.

AGHHHH · 26/02/2019 02:40

YANBU at all!

AGHHHH · 26/02/2019 02:40

Tasty and yummy are disgusting, horrible words.

YES

Bbb666 · 26/02/2019 05:34

Anyone who uses the word nom should instantly implode, not explode because that'll be messy

youknowmedontyou · 26/02/2019 05:55

Nom nom makes me rage as does a cuppa it's a cup of tea!

DaisyDreaming · 26/02/2019 05:57

The one I really dislike is ‘a cheeky Vino in Chez insert surname. The only people I see do it are the type who work hard on their middle class mum image.

I also dislike cheeky, cheating, sneaky or dirty. I don’t go around consciously trying to be body and food positive all the time but do think these are really negative.

The one I hate is nomnom
