To think this cafe needs to rethink their message to customers?

Seen this on Facebook today from a cafe -

So we are a dog friendly cafe which is completely acceptable by health and safety as long as the dogs don’t cook your food or enter the kitchen 😡 so don’t give us a hard time if you don’t like dogs because we like dogs better than humans - note don’t give Vicky a hard time over happy dogs because Vicky will always defend the dogs

Now I have a bit of a fear of dogs and wouldn't expect to see one in a cafe and I'd be a bit pissed off if I paid good money for food and drink only to be bollocked by "Vicky" if I didn't like a dog in my face Hmm AIBU to think it's not a good message to tell your paying customers that they come second to another species?

I live in the Lake District, you’d be hard pushed to find a cafe that isn’t dog friendly

cosmicangel · 24/02/2019 21:28

Having been in the cafe before with both my children and dog I loved the atmosphere it was chilled and Vicky bend over backwards to make us feel welcome. As the cafe is based in a small seaside town it would be hard to get much cliente if you weren't dog friendly, the are very upfront with the fact they are openly dog friendly and constantly post photos of their dog visitors, it's not like you couldn't have guessed there maybe some there.

Leapfrog44 · 24/02/2019 21:29

@GunpowderGelatine I'm not found enough of dogs to actually want one as it happens. I don't like the way they smell or the mess they make and I freaking hate stepping in dog shit.

I think being afraid of dogs in generally is totally irrational in terms of the actual risk the average Labrador in a dog friendly cafe poses. If you have an irrational fear that's causing you distress - go and get some CBT.

But I TOTALLY get people liking them more than humans. And I totally get the attitude of the cafe owners.

I'm trying to see what YOUR problem is.

cosmicangel · 24/02/2019 21:33

I think it's a little unfair and underhand to then snoop onto a persons personal Facebook and share posts because not everyone agrees with you.

Leapfrog44 · 24/02/2019 21:35

'fond' I mean

Fluffy68a · 24/02/2019 21:35

Hello ladies
I posted this and I’m sorry if I offended anyone but I stand my ground and love my dog loving customers
I’m not deranged or aggressive but when anyone gets aggressive with anyone bringing beautiful dogs into my cafe I defend them
I made a statement that I love dogs more than humans which is something only animal lovers
Will hopefully understand
I display very clearly that the cafe is dog friendly and I am a genuine dog lover
I’m
Sorry if anything I’ve said has offended anyone but there was a complete bitchfest going on and I stood my ground and protected the dog owners who were made to feel humiliated by a complete swamp donkey
I hope you understand ladies x we are dog and child friendly and I will defend this to the hilt
It’s ok because if you don’t like it don’t come it’s really is that simple x
Kindest regards
Vicky x Fairydust Silloth Cumbria

GunpowderGelatine · 24/02/2019 21:35

With respect @Leapfrog44 having a fear of something that will possibly harm you for no reason is absolutely not irrational and what makes me dislike "dog people" is the compete bewilderment that people are nervous of dogs, as if it's a personal slight on their "fur baby". You really can't see what there is to be afraid of? do you always downplay people's phobias? What about people afraid of spiders, do you tell them to go to therapy?

I wholeheartedly distrust people who prefer dogs to humans. I often find these people are deeply unpleasant with control issues and actually what they like is the unquestionable obedience a dog brings.

@Knittinglikemad Silloth is indeed a lovely charming town with fantastic locals (it is a little bit "local shop for local people" but dare I say such is West Cumbria). However I don't care how many Fairy trails Vicky has set up, her aggressive manner would put me off ever giving her my customer, those are her words in black and white and there's no excuse from a grown woman rubbing a business to be so hostile and aggressive.

For those saying they'd visit this cafe because of this message - how would you feel if a couple of large dogs got "excited" (dog people speak for "out of control") or if someone else's dog was not behaving well?

@BrizzleMint your bro doesn't live in Yeovil does he? The cafe there by the pool is dog friendly but only for well behaved dogs kept on leads.
I'm desperate to visit the cat cafe in Bristol 🐱

keepforgettingmyusername · 24/02/2019 21:40

' I'd be a bit pissed off if I paid good money for food and drink only to be bollocked by "Vicky" if I didn't like a dog in my face'

I'd be pissed off if I had paid good money for food and drink and somebody started moaning that I had a dog in a dog friendly cafe Hmm

ScafellPoke · 24/02/2019 21:41

gunpowder I own a dog and actually agree with you about not wanting other people’s dogs near me. I’m not a fan of other people’s dogs, just my own. In fact, after our dog has passed I won’t be getting another one as ours is so fantastic that no other dog will compare.

Lizzie48 · 24/02/2019 21:43

Seriously, OP, why does it offend you so much? I expect there are plenty of other cafes you can go to. If you don't like the idea, don't go. It's not as if you haven't been warned in advance, is it?

cosmicangel · 24/02/2019 21:45

The post that is being discussed was actually taken from Vickys personal Facebook page after a very difficult and trying week of work by the sound of it, rather than her business page. I don't really agree with copying personal posts out of context to make someone sound bad.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/02/2019 21:46

Fluffy68a

Nice to meet you in your alter ego Vicky. I don't think you need worry abut going out of business - there are plenty on here who would be delighted to have the opportunity to visit your cafe.

Smile
SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/02/2019 21:47

I don't really agree with copying personal posts out of context to make someone sound bad.

Concur.

Leapfrog44 · 24/02/2019 21:49

@GunpowderGelatine I'm not a 'dog person' by any stretch. I prefer cats but I love all animals so I understand why people have a special affection for dogs.

I distrust anyone who doesn't like or who is not kind animals. Animal lovers are kinder and happier generally. When you see someone taking joy in their pets, you know immediately there's a good soul there.

And yes, if you're afraid of spiders, dogs, flying, blood, whatever and it affects your day to day life, you should seek help.

Being afraid of a pitbull-like dog in the hands of someone who looks like they beat the shit out of it and enjoy dog fighting is reasonable. Being afraid of the average family pooch in a dog friendly cafe is NOT. It's just not.

Hairyporker · 24/02/2019 21:50

No matter what your opinion on dogs, I think we can all agree the OP is nutty as squirrel shit.

Hairyporker · 24/02/2019 21:51

Oh, and people who afraid of "pitbull-like" dogs are always cunts.

Leapfrog44 · 24/02/2019 21:54

The kind of people who give up their time and energy to rescue dogs don't do it because they are unpleasant and have control issues. It's because they are KIND, caring and empathetic.

It's the fucking psychopaths and evil people who abandon them and abuse them. You're totally on the wrong team.

cosmicangel · 24/02/2019 21:56

Smile I totally agree with this.

Leapfrog44 · 24/02/2019 21:59

@Hairyporker I'm talking about the beaten up, abused looking dogs that gangs use for dog fighting. It's 'reasonable' I guess to be nervous of a dog that looks like it's being used for the purposes of intimidation or worse; but I think OP can be reasonably confident she'll not be encountering any illegal breeds or fighting dogs in a dog-friendly cafe.

Leapfrog44 · 24/02/2019 22:02

@Fluffy68a everyone understands. OP still doesn't but I think everyone else finds your attitude entirely reasonable.

And I think you should be annoyed that she has posted something from your personal facebook page onto a public forum with the intention of ridiculing your views.

GunpowderGelatine · 24/02/2019 22:06

@Leapfrog44 it's very strange that me having a (despite what you say) rational fear of dogs makes you assume I'm not an animal lover or someone who supports rescue dogs? I am nervous of dogs and dislike them in general. I wish them no harm of course and hope they are all taken care of, but not adoring dogs at an unhealthy levels doesnt mean I'm not an animal lover

BTW the jack russells that mail newborns are non-pitbull "average family pooches".

OP posts:
GunpowderGelatine · 24/02/2019 22:08

I posted from a public profile with plenty of context.

I will never be convinced that it's a good thing to tell your customers that they come second to a dog

Vicky can I ask if a dog was rubbing about, barking at customers, leaping up etc and the paying customer wasn't happy would you be happy to Chuck out the "swamp donkey"?

OP posts:
CripsSandwiches · 24/02/2019 22:10

@Fluffy68a

I'm not even a huge dog fan but would be happy to come to your cafe. I totally got the intention behind your post on your cafe's page and your personal Facebook page (which OP shouldn't have reproduced out of context here). It's fine if you don't like dogs but then don't go into a dog friendly cafe - there are plenty of others!
