Molluscum contagiosum or something nasty?

Not an AIBU, shamelessly posting here for traffic...

Bit of a random one to be honest, so I am here for the wisdom of MN. Went to the GP today for a strange little mark/lump that appeared a few weeks ago. He said he thought it was most likely Molluscum contagiosum but has referred me on just to check it’s not anything sinister.

Anyhow... I’ve since googled Molluscum contagiosum and most of what I’m seeing are multiple little lumps/bumps, but I only have one. It’s entirely possible it could be Molluscum contagiosum as the GP tells me they are commonly picked up/passed on by children at school and I have young children. However, I have been very conscious of this thing and probably touching it quite a lot (id never heard of MC before) but it hasn’t spread and no one else in the family has anything.

Anyone ever experienced a single bump with Molluscum contagiosum

It can spread very slowly. It can spread faster especially in places where it touches other skin e.g. dd had them in the crook of her arm and she ended up with quite a few. Ds only had about 3 in total

I was told by a consultant to stick a sterilised pin in it amd mess with it, without it being painful.

So my immune system would pick up on it being there and get rid of it.

I think I’ve got one on my eye lid that has been there a couple of months.

It appeared during the time that DD was suffering with very obvious and GP diagonosed MC that took months to get rid of.

My son still has it behind his knees over a year later. The cream the GP gave us did nothing for the spots but helped clean up the eczema behind it. But the spots are still there. He has one solitary one on his back, and I seem to have one on my side but no more elsewhere. They are steadily going black and drying up but he keeps getting more outbreaks. He won't let us pop them after we did it once and it was really painful (rather satisfying getting all the manky puss out tho!), so now just waiting and hoping they clear up by themselves. Sorry, was not much help to your question other than I have only one spot.

If you have got one leave it alone or it will spread!

My son had one solitary one on the back of his neck when he was small.

Yes I got it when I was pregnant with DS3 and my DS2 has it at the time. Apparently adults can get during pregnancy when their immune system is lowered.
I only had one bump or 'spot'. It looked awful, I was convinced I had something terrible, it eventually burst, I had raised lymph nodes above it for several weeks afterwards and then it all cleared up. I think I have a photo of it somewhere on my phone - I'll see.

Here is what mine looked like. Sorry for gross pic. this is shortly after it burst. This is the only one I had though. My middle child also had it but my husband and eldest child didn't catch it.

My ds1 had one molluscum for a good year or so aged 10/11. (One about 4mm across plus a possible very very tiny one nearby). He saw several dermatologists. I worried about amelanotic melanoma. It eventually shrank and disappeared, Nobody else in the family had one.

It was on his chest, btw. Very random.

Mine started out as one on an eyelid. On its own for ages. Then 2 more came, then 3 on other eyelid! 18 months later, the ones in the first eyelid are gone and the others are on their way out. I went to the doctor's thinking it was skin cancer despite being an absolute stickler for suncream (but not on my eyelids!)

my dd started with just 1 but ended up with 5 over the space of a year. hers kept getting infected and needed antibiotics. they finally look like they are starting to clear up now.one has left a scar.

My dd had LOADS when she was about 9. Only thing that worked was medical grade Manuka Honey (used to be called Manuka Care ointment) on each spot every night. Even the GP was impressed.

I digress from the one spot problem but thought it might help.

My daughter had this quite badly on her chest for about 18 months. We popped one fairly early on which made it spread then eventually used molludab, a really expensive treatment which finally got rid of it! I wouldn't pop it. She still has scars 2 years later. I would recommend the molludab.
