But has done nothing about removing Asma Assad’s? Asma Assad is a dual British-Syrian National, so why not deprive her (and her kids) of British nationality? I can’t quite believe that the government hasn’ Done this. Why on Earth not?

She is entitled to apply for Bangladeshi citizenship until she is 21. However, the Bangladeshi authorities have said they will not grant it.

And why should they? She was born, brought up, educated and radicalized in the UK. She’s our problem.

maryso · 23/02/2019 18:31

Standing trial in the Middle East does not mean just the Syria system. There is no effective border with Iraq, as you can imagine. Iraqi courts are established, and anyway I can't see the Kurds handing them over to Assad, they are too compassionate.

With the big assumption of a life sentence for Daesh membership, it makes more sense to pay for the cost of Daesh sentences in the Middle East. It avoids infection of others with extremism, justice is seen to be done, and very probably costs less. So they will be shot of her resource-wise and confident of justice appropriate to the crimes suffered.

KissingInTheRain · 23/02/2019 18:32

She is entitled to apply for Bangladeshi citizenship until she is 21.

That’s not what (some) expert commentators have said.

KissingInTheRain · 23/02/2019 18:34

Sorry, what I meant was that she is a Bangladeshi citizen already.

maryso · 23/02/2019 18:37

“If found innocent then we can talk about deradicalisation.“
Innocent of what?

Innocent of whatever she is charged with. Their region, their laws.

I believe Daesh membership has attracted a life sentence for a French woman. French are good at paying money to get their people out of beheadings, wonder whether they will do the same to keep her there?

Imissgmichael · 23/02/2019 18:38

Well Cory she joined a death cult and thinks women and children being raped by numerous men every day is ok. Her stance on this hasnt changed. I won’t be crying if she’s executed.

Even if brain washed actions should have consequences. You know if the 2nd world war happened now, idiots would be sticking up for concentration camp guards. It’s sickening.

I hope the coverage she’s getting results with victims coming forward and that sickening smirk is wiped from her face.

brassbrass · 23/02/2019 18:46

We cannot risk leaving these people out there to regroup. IS are weakened but they are not completely wiped out. They will be looking to regroup and resurface.

Best thing would be to remove all the foreign IS members and interrogate them. Bringing them back doesn't have to mean slipping back into normal life or cushy prison it doesn't even have to mean the UK there are plenty of air bases dotted around the world. But remove them from Syria and Iraq so those countries can attempt to tackle what is left without all the extra noise.

People are acting like leaving them out there solves the problem of terrorism Hmm it's such a short sighted, short lived, lynch mob attitude.

BertrandRussell · 23/02/2019 18:53

“Even if brain washed actions should have consequences. You know if the 2nd world war happened now, idiots would be sticking up for concentration camp guards. It’s sickening.”

Has anyone said her actions should not have consequences?

Imissgmichael · 23/02/2019 18:53

Except brass the uk don’t prosecute them.

BertrandRussell · 23/02/2019 18:56

“Except brass the uk don’t prosecute them“

Some have been prosecuted. You can only prosecute people who have committed crimes. Holding appalling views is not a crime. Being a repulsive human being is not a crime.

So save all the chest beating for putting pressure on the govt to demonstrate effective prosecution strategy. She is the tip of the iceberg there will be plenty of others not to mention the ones already back.

Public opinion and pressure does work but it needs to be focused. If all the news in the last week had been about challenging the lack of prosecutions we'd be having different conversations and the HS would be looking for other answers not a limp revoking of citizenship which is already looking like it won't stick.

I've never seen one single indication on any thread that Bertrand does not care about the victims of terrorism. The problem is that there is a certain right-wing train of thought that decrees that anyone who expresses anything other than right wing views must be in cahoots with terrorists and criminals, no matter what they say to the contrary.

BertrandRussell · 23/02/2019 19:14

No, I would not like to live next door to a Jihadi.

And, for the avoidance of doubt, no, I am not a Jihadi.

And for the avoidance of further doubt, I have never said anything that suggests I am a terrorist apologist. Despite a few bizarrely fixated posters.....

Imissgmichael · 23/02/2019 19:15

Yes Soup WTF. BR has done nothing but make excuses for girls that have joined Isil. BR has also pontificated about the attack on London Bridge. No compassion for victims at all. Yep I do question what side BR is on.

Nah Brass more than one expert has said they Bangladesh authorities aren’t being truthful. They’ve actually contradicted them self in writing.

SoupDragon · 23/02/2019 19:17

And I question your intelligence.

maryso · 23/02/2019 19:18

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad are you saying that Daesh victims are Nazis?

Your little picture actually fits Daesh best today. Not the Kurds, not the Yazidis, not the Christians, not the Shias, not the Manchester Arena families. We will have to make what we will of your attempt at rationalising Daesh atrocities.

Oyster where’s your evidence she was groomed and raped

No-one has ever seriously contested that she was groomed by her uncle and his associates. In fact, it was known before she left by the police, social services and her school, but unfortunately they took their time about doing anything about it and didn't tell her father. That is one of the many reasons why we should not be shrugging off responsibility now.

As for rape, she was under age when she was "married". Given the ages of her children, it's pretty clear that the man concerned didn't wait till she was 16 to have sex with her. That's statutory rape at the very least.

maryso · 23/02/2019 19:21

Please don't pick on Bertrand! S/he is always good for a joust, and being focussed on every and any under-dog is not always a bad thing.

BertrandRussell · 23/02/2019 19:23

“No compassion for victims at all. Yep I do question what side BR is on.”

Oh, don’t be silly.

Imissgmichael · 23/02/2019 19:24

Saturday I’m not right wing but hey thanks for the insult, not.

We don’t need people like SB in the UK and my son of immigrants dual citizen DH agrees with me.

SaturdayNext · 23/02/2019 19:25

Bangladesh has culture of marrying girls early, maybe it wasn't such a strange Idea for her

But she's been brought up and educated in Britain.
