A bit of a weird one but me and DP can't decide who is right Confused

Which side of the potato cake would you butter!? The smooth side or the rough side?

I've attached pictures, I always butter the smooth side but he says I'm doing it wrong.

@TrendyNorthLondonTeen the round version of Lorne sausage is called slice. Anyone calling Lorne sausage slice or square definitely are from a lower class background. Wink Most likely a Weegie!

"Anyone calling Lorne sausage slice or square definitely are from a lower class background. wink Most likely a Weegie!"

How VERY dare you! I might be lower class scum but I'm NOT a weegie!
(ahem I'm from Greenock ahem)

PurplePepperEater · 22/02/2019 15:43

The smooth side

dementedpixie · 22/02/2019 15:44

I'm no weegie either, I'm from North Lanarkshire! Must be lower class as I don't call it a slice.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 22/02/2019 15:58

Not a circle in sight...

dementedpixie · 22/02/2019 16:01

That does not say Lorne on it either

dementedpixie · 22/02/2019 16:02

I sometimes buy that one - but it has 4 slices in the pack I buy

toomuchtooold · 22/02/2019 16:05

That's not slice, that's square slice Grin

Anyway the answer, if you're going to butter it, is to butter on the smooth side because the rough side has sort of blisters on it that get stuck to the butter and make a mess.

Think I might have to have some form breakfast tomorrow. Anyone got a recipe for snowballs, that's the other thing I miss from home...

dementedpixie · 22/02/2019 16:06

Do you mean the cake ones or the mallow ones?

dementedpixie · 22/02/2019 16:08

www.christinascucina.com/scottish-snowballs-coconut-dipped-sandwich-cookies-raspberry-jam/ don't know how authentic this is

howabout · 22/02/2019 16:14
  1. That is a potato cake not a tattie scone - tattie scones are triangles and thinner.
  2. Fry or toast and butter as per tea cakes and crumpets - either side acceptable and good with marmite and / or cheese.
  3. If making your own add an egg and cheese and spot of mustard and fry in butter rather than using a dryish pan (as you would normally like Welsh scones etc) for the ultimate version
  4. As per pp fry tattie scones OR eat cold buttered and rolled up
  5. According to Wiki Lorne sausage is a pork/beef mix.
  6. Best breakfast requires well fired roll, fried tattie scone, Lorne sausage and fried egg with builder's tea.
  7. Potato cake with beans, bacon and egg (fried or scrambled) for tea or use them as a base for eggs florentine.

However, we're working up to pancake day in our house and they won't be the crepe kind but a cross between Scottish and American.

Ffsnosexallowed · 22/02/2019 16:17

Known as potato bread in ni, or a tattie scone in Scotland. Never ever seen them buttered, always fried.

amilosingitor · 22/02/2019 16:19

What's a potato cake?! Confused

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 22/02/2019 16:19

"However, we're working up to pancake day in our house and they won't be the crepe kind but a cross between Scottish and American"

Don't say that so loud, on MN that's a hangable offence right up there with celebrating Hallowe'en and saying Santa...

dementedpixie · 22/02/2019 16:20

Well, it has potato and flour in it. OP has put a picture of it too

amilosingitor · 22/02/2019 16:22

I've never heard of it. Nor have a i heard of square sausage.

dementedpixie · 22/02/2019 16:22

I have bought these to go along with breakfast tomorrow.

I love them buttered with marmalade, or fried with a full Scottish, or fried with bacon in a roll.

Don't care which side the butter and marmalade goes.

hellsbellsmelons · 22/02/2019 16:30

Slice it in half and put butter in the middle.
Isn't that what everyone does?
I had these this morning - yummy!
And blimey - don't fry them!

dementedpixie · 22/02/2019 16:32

How are you able to slice it in half as they are very thin?

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 23/02/2019 01:31

"Slice it in half and put butter in the middle.
Isn't that what everyone does?"

Ummm..... no.

unicornfeathers · 23/02/2019 01:44

I butter both sides 😳

AuntMarch · 23/02/2019 01:49

You toast and butter them? And they're potato?

What?

SD1978 · 23/02/2019 01:52

Rough side here. Flat side is the 'bottom'

BrizzleMint · 23/02/2019 02:11

The one on the right.
