A bit of a weird one but me and DP can't decide who is right Confused

Which side of the potato cake would you butter!? The smooth side or the rough side?

I've attached pictures, I always butter the smooth side but he says I'm doing it wrong.

Toast them, then butter whichever side you like, you radical daredevils you! Grin
They are gorgeous eaten hot and dripping with melted butter. PPs who decry it really ought to give it a try.

Redwinestillfine · 22/02/2019 14:43

Butter? No no no! Grill with melted cheese on top or fry with bacon/ eggs.

dementedpixie · 22/02/2019 14:43

And square sausage is sold in the chill here alongside other sausages

amrscot · 22/02/2019 14:44

@PoliticalBiscuit sorry Grin

Square sausage is brilliant. My sister had to smuggle a full block down from home when she lived in Liverpool. Plus it's really called Lorne sausage.

amrscot · 22/02/2019 14:45

I think I'm going to have to try square sausage!

I've never heard of potato cakes so googled them and it turned up a lot of recipes for them and what to eat them with. Now I'm even more confused as I get the impression you eat them hot.

So are you buying them ready made and eating them raw OP? Probably not a good idea. Or are you taking them out of the frying pan and smothering them in butter? Probably also not a good idea.

I need answers.

pigsDOfly · 22/02/2019 14:51

Ah just seen from pp that you can toast or grill them.

amrscot · 22/02/2019 14:51

@pigsDOfly no you toast them then butter them

Oysterbabe · 22/02/2019 14:54

I've never had one but would butter the rough side.

pigsDOfly · 22/02/2019 14:54

Thank you armscot.

wigglybeezer · 22/02/2019 14:59

There nice buttered or fried, I make my own and eat them with butter or cheese straight off the girdle. If there are any left that can be fried in bacon fat as part of a cooked breakfast.

PandaMa · 22/02/2019 15:01

Madness. You fry them as pp have said and put them on a roll with slice (square sausage) and top off with tomato sauce or brown sauce!

RavenLG · 22/02/2019 15:02

It's like you're speaking another language on this thread Grin

Where would one purchase square sausages and potato cakes because they look lush!

MitziK · 22/02/2019 15:04

I'm more baffled by the fact that you only appear to have two of the things and no fried egg or black pudding to hold the butter on.

Of course, if you made your own (cold potato mashed up with flour and water, salt and pepper to make a dough, then cooked in the pan), you'd be able to get the butter to stick on whatever surface you wanted. They'd taste better than ones effectively made with Smash - and your OH would be in no position to complain either way because they're just too good.

Jakethekid · 22/02/2019 15:04

As a northerner I toast them and then butter the rough side

SaturdayNext · 22/02/2019 15:07

They definitely get buttered in our house, but I can't remember which side.

TheNoodlesIncident · 22/02/2019 15:11

I've had tattie scones as they come and buttered them - don't think we ever waited til they heated up to eat them. It's been YEARS since I had a tattie scone. Those large brown bits that peel up when you butter them...

And square sausage. And scotch pies too, haven't had them for decades

pictish · 22/02/2019 15:11

You don’t butter a tattie scone!
Seriously...I’ve never heard of anyone buttering a tattie scone and they are a common breakfast food round here. They are fried so you son’t need any additional grease.

pictish · 22/02/2019 15:14

I have heard similar rumours of people buttering a croissant! Just no.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 22/02/2019 15:14

"Lorne sausage"

I think you'll find it's slice and only degenerates call it "square sausage" or "lorne"... Wink

TheNoodlesIncident · 22/02/2019 15:15

ANY breakfast item can be consumed purely as a vehicle for butter. Surely what Scottish cuisine is all about..? Wink

Fingermoose · 22/02/2019 15:16

Northerner here - toast then butter the smooth side, or grill with marmite and melted cheese (also on the smooth side).

Melroses · 22/02/2019 15:20

Definitely warmed, buttered (either side will do) and eaten for tea Wink
