GRAPHIC: Has part of my nipple fallen off?

bfissues · 20/02/2019 03:55

I was just feeding my week old baby and noticed a bit of blood around his mouth. I took him off and this was on the end of my nipple, sticking out. My nipple is damaged and bleeding but the area of damage looks smaller than this. Is there anything this could be other than part of my nipple?

Erm not sure. But I didn’t want to just run and not answer.

Harmonyrays · 20/02/2019 04:18

Umm cant you check to see if your nipple is there Hmm

Rtmhwales · 20/02/2019 04:22

Were your nipples raw from breastfeeding? Mine kind of scabbed over and one came off sort of similar. The actual nipple was fine though. Are you in a lot of pain?

SD1978 · 20/02/2019 04:22

Clean the blood off and see? Any blood in babies mouth?

ChangingStates · 20/02/2019 04:22

Could it have come out of your nipple? Don't know what that would mean either though

ChangingStates · 20/02/2019 04:25

Just googled blood clot coming out of nipple when breastfeeding and there are quite a few posts on various forums from women saying that's happened to them- so could be that

Jellyfloodagain · 20/02/2019 04:25

Could it be a scab?

bfissues · 20/02/2019 04:34

Thanks @Harmonyrays. Helpful.

My nipple was already damaged, yes. Not in a lot of pain, it didn't hurt when it came off and is just a bit stingy now. I didn't see any blood in the baby's mouth after it happened. I don't think it's a scab because my nipples hadn't really scabbed over, they were still quite raw looking.

Thanks @ChangingStates I'll have a google of that now. Maybe my google search wasn't specific enough before.

I was going to say blood clot, too.

How scary for you though!

OneStepSideways · 20/02/2019 15:09

It could be. Part of my friend's nipple fell off from breastfeeding (baby had a poor latch) she was very upset but according to her GP it's not uncommon. It grew back again. She used nipple shields and a lot of lanolin cream after that!

Best get it checked out asap

Bumblebeans · 20/02/2019 15:14

This happened to me. It was a bit of my nipple. It looked like my baby had a jelly tot in her mouth!!! Lots of lanolin cream and letting air get to my nipple helped it to heal. It grew back and now I can't tell which one it was.

Stompythedinosaur · 20/02/2019 15:24

I think you'll have to have a look and see. Part of one of my nipples went white and then fell off due to breastfeeding, I still have a sort of big dimple on one side. The early days of breastfeeding are awful! It does get better though! The best tip I got was that it was ok to just feed on one side for a few days while the nipple is healing.

BigDamnHero · 20/02/2019 15:28

Yeah, probably but nipples heal really quickly (they have to!).

just remember blood from your nipple is totally safe for your baby to digest BUT remember this if/when your DS is sick (I panicked about the weird flecks until I realised it was my own blood!!).

Hope it heals soon and isn't too sore.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 20/02/2019 15:30

I'm sorry you are in so much pain, that being said Harmony's comment was hardly unreasonable.

ErickBroch · 20/02/2019 15:35

I read about a blocked duct coming out and it was like that - hope it helps!

Theunreasonableone · 20/02/2019 15:36

DH's cousin was telling me about when this happened to her breastfeeding. It's just a clot. Don't worry.

bfissues · 20/02/2019 19:23

The response to harmony's comment was because I'd said that the area of damage looked smaller than the thing that came off. No dimples, just raw like before. Thanks for all your responses though. I mentioned it to the breastfeeding lady today and she said it could have been nipple. Surely I'd have felt that though wouldn't I?

Oh ouch you poor thing, that’s taken me back to bf my babies my toes curled automatically looking at that pick. Could be a bit of flesh yes or a scab. Get lots of cream on, maybe get checked for a tongue tie, fwiw MAM nipple shields helped a lot for me

KittyMcTitty · 20/02/2019 20:01

Second nipple shields! I found Medela the best. Get two sets so you can have one in the steriliser! You can come off of them once it’s healed! Blood won’t harm your baby but that looks mighty unpleasant for you!!!

MigGril · 20/02/2019 20:07

I'm not sure what it is but, you need help with your latch so it's pain free and keep those nipples covered up. Breast milk is great for healing, but they now recommend moist wound healing not to air out. Should heal fast this way.

Cheby · 20/02/2019 20:10

Lansinoh and some decent face to face positioning and attachment advice for you OP, stat!

TheArtfulScreamer1 · 20/02/2019 20:27

OMG breastfeeding can make your nipple fall off??????? I'm 36+2 and really want to breastfeed but I didn't know this. OP you are a very brave lady and I hope it heals quickly for you. I'll be sure to remember this thread for advice if it happens to me in a few weeks time.

Tumon · 20/02/2019 20:30

Could it be a water/milk blister from babies lip coming off? Looks a bit like that

MaryShelley1818 · 20/02/2019 20:48

Part of my nipple detached and the pain was excruciating.
I actually stopped BF for a week and just expressed and topped up with formula. I tried nipple shields but it was distressing to see them fill with blood. After they’d healed I returned to breastfeeding and continued to do so for 6mths with no further problems.
